Hi Group!
I'm sorry I've been out of the loop. I injured my knee snowboarding last weekend and am now facing an ACL replacement surgery on Wednesday. I'm trying to not get too depressed about it, but I was really looking forward to this year's training and racing goals and now it looks like I'll need to re-evaluate. This will be my second ACL replacement for this knee, although the 1st time was much worse (I had the "unhappy triad" of an ACL, MCL and meniscus tear) so I'm hoping the recovery isn't as bad as I'm anticipating. I'll start physical therapy on Friday and will go twice a week for 6 weeks.

Any words of wisdom?

Best,
Amanda

Really sorry to hear that - not a fun way to start the year. I've not been through a knee surgery so my only "words of wisdom" are to keep your head up and be faithful about your rehab. You can get through it! Keep us posted on how things go - we'll be thinking about you.

Amanda - I'm so sorry to hear about your knee. I'm with Mark on following your rehab faithfully and don't try to do too much too soon. Keep us posted and let us know how you are doing.

On the positive side - I had pretty major knee surgery in 2005 and thought I'd never be able to run again and was really stressed about the recovery and my ability to race. IM in 2007 proved that taking my time in recovery had paid dividends, I bet you'll find that as well

Thanks for the words of encouragement. So far, so good! Surgery went well today and I'm not feeling as groggy as expected.

In the Health / Injuries Forum I have a post on Hip Discomfort - I won't reiterate everything here, but if anyone has time and any experience and could give me some feedback that would be much appreciated.

Amanda - glad to hear things went well - keep us all posted on how you're doing.

I ran my first half marathon today!!! Read all about it in my race report if you are interested. I am very very sore and will definitely be taking tomorrow off, and probably the whole week off from running.

Awesome job FrogLegs!!!!! Sounds like you did great I would definitely make sure you take in approx 150-200 calories an hour when running long like that. So that would have been like Ultima and 2 gels or so. I like GU Chocolate Outrage (it tastes like Chocolate Frosting) and Orange Sport Beans myself

Definitely rest today and savor your accomplishment. I'd probably go for an easy (like slow 30 min jog) later in the week to loosen your legs up.

Ran 2x this week, about 3 miles each time, I think my body is appreciating the decrease in volume. My next race is an oly in 2 months, so I think I'll do 3-5 mile runs next week and over the next few weeks, get my long run back up around 8 miles.

And I really need to start swimming again!!! I have no problem with the 1500m distance but I still think it would be a good idea to, ummm, train. Someone tell me to get back in the pool!!

Hey People!

Happy February I'm not seeing a lot of activity in people's logs.... what's going on? Need advice, motivation, a kick in the booty?

That's why we're all here together in this group.

Amanda - How's the recovery going?

Ironpeople - Training has officially begun for those on the 20 week plan, how are you feeling?

Froglegs - Get in the pool

So how can I help you all.........

Plenty of activity in my logs.... even pool time!!! 3000 yards last week, 1500 so far this week.

I've backed off a lot on the running since my left knee is bothering me. Most of my running since the 1/2 marathon has been on the treadmill since that seems to aggravate it less, but I'm still hitting the road once a week. My next race is on 3/22 (oly) and possibly a 10k on 3/8 which I will treat as a training run.

Have come to the conclusion that trying to train in the winter with short days and busy schedules with the kids is not as feasible for me as I thought. I'm going to focus more on the run and if I can fit in some bike/pool time great, but if not, that's OK too.

Once summer hits with some longer days and the kids are on vacation, I might attack things a little more aggressively, but in the meantime, I'm going to work on the running and try to fit in a few races in the Spring / early Summer.

Just taking it one day/week at a time at this point.

Hey all,
Just checking in with a knee update. So far so good. I'm going to PT twice a week and doing my exercises on the other days. I'm up to 20 minutes on the stationary bike and will hopefully get back on the rowing machine over the weekend. I really miss running (never thought I'd say that) and swimming, so I'm living vicariously through you guys!

I'd love any tips, ideas, advice to facilitate the recovery process. My main concern is losing fitness since I haven't been able to get my heart rate up much. Has anyone done any pool running?

Hey Amanda - I haven't really done pool running but swimming is a great therapy for your knee. Just do it with a pull buoy (unless your PT people give the green light to do some kicking).

It's a great way to get your HR up, stay in good shape and the water is good for range of motion on a knee recovery. Also stretching and icing really helped me when I was rehabbing my knee.

Jen - Haven't heard from you in a while? Are things ok?
