Nope...cannot do an unassisted one.  I get about 3/4 of the way up, and that's all I've got in me.  Maybe someday, though.  I'm sure if I lost about 15lbs or so, I might be able to do it then.  But with the extra weight on me, no way.

I can do three on a good day. I would love to be able to rip out a bunch of them. It took a lot of strength training to be able to do three.

Me too.  I've never been able to do one and I think it's about time.

Thanks Kathy. I do have to say that official super stud status should go to Trixie being that she ripped them out after 100 miles. That's hard core.

For those of you who are older do you remember the President's Fitness Challenge/Test you did in grade school in the 60s?

I aced every requirement but could never do that stupid bent arm hang. I was a figure skater starting when I was 5 so my legs were strong but did nothing that developed my upper body strength.

Winter of '07 my goal was do to regular push ups. Took about 6 months but I could and in time I could do 30 with my feet up on bench...my daughters all thought it was cool I had biceps and I looked muscular.

More work this winter and I'll be able to do it in time. We just put up a pull up bar this past weekend and we are starting P90X which should help get me there.

Nice job those of you who can do any!

I can do about one and a half, maybe two on a really good day. Mostly it's because I climb though so I have a bit of upper body strength from that. Of course if I could do more pullups I'd probably be a stronger climber. Or maybe if I was a stronger climber I could do more pullups....

Once upon a time (or 2 years ago), I could do 3 sets of 6 chin-ups.  I just tried on Tuesday and managed one and a half.

That is sad.

such a proud mama!

I've been working on these off and on over the past few months and currently I am at 4.  I didn't read through to see if hand position matters, but I use an IronGym in my stairway and my hands face each other.

Just did 3 with hands facing in, so I'm not sure what that means.

I'm working on doing them at the YMCA on the machine with assist. I'm using over half of my weight in assist and do 5 or 6. Maybe sometime next year I'll be able to do 1-3 without assistance.

Kathy, I TOTALLY remember the President's Fitness Challenge, and the bent arm hang!!!!! I was freakish and could hang there all day. The gym teacher would eventually just tell me to stop and drop down.

I can do 2-3 deadhang and 10 consecutive is my max for kipping, however, I have done up to 75 kipping in a single workout. (Thanks, Crossfit.) By the way, if I can do it, ANYONE can....believe it.

I have a goal of one unassisted pull up by the end of the year, but I don't think I am going to make it.  I can do five using the skinny blue band at Crossfit (which is not the thinnest band they have).  I graduated from the really thick blue band and the thick green band to the blue one, but if I have to do more than five in a group, I have to drop down to the green band.  I find using the bands the best - better than the assist machine at the gym or the jumping pull ups we used at Crossfit before they got the bands.

We ought to make this some sort of challenge.

Kathy,

I can do lots! Thanks to CrossFit. I worked on them every day I went to a session and quickly (like a week or 2) progressed to being able to do 1-2 without a band.

Now, I'll never use a band. My favorite is "Helen" with the 3 rounds of 12 pullups. I've even managed to add it to 5 rounds!

Good luck!

Comet you rock!

I started going to Crossfit a month ago and can see gains in my pull ups. I use bands and can do more for sure than I started.

Crossfit has a goat board and mine are pull ups and full range push ups. I can do push ups yep but not go all the way to the floor but I'm making gains there as well.

I can't wait to post I can do pulls ups. I feel now I'm on the right track to master them. At Crossfit we do so much upper body stuff and it is making a difference.

Yes - try to do them every week.  Can do 5-8 wide grip pullups, 8-10 overhand or underhand grip - -it's takes a long time to get this far.  But it really does a number of back development.

It all started with P90X

of course, I am a guy

The best way to learn pullups (if your a girl, or guy) is to buy a pull up bar. Suspend it across a hall in your house (one that you walk through frequently), 8-9 ft up depending on your height. Don't suspend it on a doorway, you want to be able to hang from it without touching the ground. And play around on it every day. Try just hanging, and swinging first. Then jumping and pulling up (using momentum from jump), and then from hanging. If you jump up on it every time, or every other time you walk by, you will be able to do pull ups in 2-3 months. The bars are removable, for when you have company over. And it's super useful for abs as well

This is good advice. It's called "greasing the groove" and you can do it for anything you want to improve, but it works especially well for pull-ups since many struggle to even get one. As you said, hang, then try kipping pull-ups, then kip yourself up to the top and do the negative as slow as you can. Eventually you'll be able to knock out the real ones.
