Subject: Jszat's Group- full
NAME: Jszat/Joe
STORY: Third season triathlete with aspirations of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and challenging myself a little more every year.
FAMILY STATUS: Married, father of 4 daughters ages 6, 4, and 2 2 year olds
CURRENT TRAINING: After focusing on going long in 2007 for my first IM, will be trying to push it a little more with tempo work and hoping to improve speed up to the half iron distance.
THIS YEAR'S RACES: 2007 races- 1 sprint, 1 oly, one HIM, Ironman Wisconsin and one 50k trail run
2008 RACES:  Still working on absolute schedule, but planning on two half Irons, two sprints and an attempt at a Boston Qualification in the fall as well as a 50 mile ultra.  Focus for 08 will be more tempo work than previous years as well as attempting to learn power based training on the bike.
WEIGHTLOSS: Down 15 pounds from start in 2005 but body composition changing big time (um, for the better! )
WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTOR: This is my third stint as a mentor.  I am very open to all levels of questions though probably will be most beneficial to the beginner up to first time IM or someone looking to improve times south of 12 hours.  Solid on running and biking (usually top 10% in races) and working on swim after two looooong years (patience is your friend!)  Hopefully helpful in showing how one can balance long training weeks with family life, a job and other stuff that real folks do.  I also try and keep a sane perspective on the sport.  I will help point out potential limiters and tips when I can.  All I ask is you are open and put in the work!  Its kind of an easy sport that way as far as results go!

After meeting you last weekend I would really like to join your mentor group Joe.  I have also been doing triathlon for 3 years.  Started with all sprints my first year and worked up to a HIM last year.  I will be doing IMMOO this year and this is where I think I can get a lot perspective from you.  I have lost about 35 pounds since starting tri's and plan on getting down to 200 pounds by September.  This would actually be a pretty low weight for me, I think the last time I was under 200 I hadn't even started shaving yet.  I am involved in the BT plans and once I start one I usually stick it out until the end.  I am aiming for a sub 13:30 Ironman (actually lower but I need to be realistic) and plan on doing everything I can to make the goal.  I was a mentor on the first go-around and really enjoyed the whole thing.  But as a teacher and Dean of Students in a high school setting I would kind of like the change of being a part of a group instead of leading a group.

Joe I would really like to join your group.

My name is Ben and I'm a 20 year old student at the University of Kansas. I am 5'5" and weigh 140 pounds and am actually looking to gain weight. I have been running for over a year now with the ultimate goal of sometime doing an Ironman. After seeing that there was a 1/2 IM coming right here to Lawrence, Kansas in June I couldn't resist. I also bike occasionally and have biked for up to 3 hours at a time (I wasn't going too fast though). I have always been a relatively strong swimmer but I've only done it recreationally so I don't really know where I stand.

I started exercising for my health because I have Cystic Fibrosis and CF related Diabetes. This affects not only my lungs but also my digestive system [Being overweight is never an issue ]. Over a year ago when I was in the hospital I decided that if I didn't take the time to go through the necessary pains associated with exercise now then I would go through those pains later in life with a very very negative outcome. While in the hospital I read about the Ironman and it seemed impossible even for someone without a physical disability. This is exactly why I'm doing it and the 1/2 IM on June 15th will be my first step.

You should start your own group and teach how to rely on your genetics and never have to work, freak.

Welcome aboard Ben!  As stated in the half IM thread you started, you will want to look hard at nutrtion as you train as the HIM distance makes for some long days.  The better you nail down nutrition, the better your day goes.  You have an ambitious goal, but its certainly attainable if you are willing to do the work.

Well Joe I was wondering if you would take me onto your team?

I'm Justin... One of your 2007 mentorees. I'm 6'2" about 180-185 depending on the day. My plans for this year are pretty agressive. This is my third year of triathlons. I plan on one HIM either 8/24 or 9/14. I just haven't decided which one yet.

4/5 - Half Mary
6/15? - Sprint
7/22? - Oly
8/24 - HIM or Oly
9/7 - Oly
9/14 - HIM or Oly

I plan of working on better consitency and better running and biking ability. My strong suit is my swimming and will just try and maintain that consistency with basic and regular workouts.

I really benefited from being in your group in May and I hope the doors are open.

So, even though I know Joe and bug him enough, I thought I'd see if he'd let me join his nifty little group.  I was in a mentoring group last year, and slacked off, but would like to try again...extra motivation is always a good thing for this chica.

So, what do you say, Joe?

Yep, welcome aboard.  We are at 5 but since I know some of y'all (I am not including Yams cuz he is joking around) I will take one more.  I will also be implementing a donkey cap since the donks a support group of their own really.  Dont want to freak out the non-donks in the group.  For those of you thinking WTF?, Team Turbo Donkey/Tri Donkai is a training group I am a part of as are Maggyruth, Djdavey and Pseudoyams, so you will likely hear a lot of donkey references and random EEEEAAAWWWWiing. So did you feel any difference during your swim or are you just focusing on drills to build up the muscle memory and kick bad habits? How about the shoulder? Did it yell at you any?

Hey Joe,

I was wondering if i could join your group! Here is a little bit about me:
My name is mike, and i'm 21 years old, a student at the university of Idaho (graduating may 08). i started tri'ing this summer (june). my parents have always been into backpacking/hiking/biking/mtn biking and skiing - so i was exposed to outdoors a lot when i was young. i have been downhill skiing for 12 years or so, and ski racing for 5ish.

i mtn biked on and off since grade school, but never got really into it until this year. i feel like biking is definitly my strength, and i have feel good doing it. however, i battled shin splints while running most of the summer. i took some time off (a month or two) from running, got some insoles and did a lot of stretching and the prob is pretty much gone! i am using these winter months to build a solid running base ( i want to be comfortable running 4x/week for 4-5 miles), then i will start a 1/2 marathon plan to do the CDA 1/2 mary in may.
swimming - i really sucked at swimming, but thanks to lots of hard work in the summer, i got pretty decent. i have been slacking for the last month or month and a half, but previous to that, i was consistently swimming 1:50/100 yds.
i have done two tri's - both sprints. Next season i want to do a 1/2 mary, a couple oly's and i have been thinking about a HIM, although, i don't think i will be ready (who knows!).

if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Very awkward right now cuz I am working drills to break old muscle memory.  I have almost 250k yards over the past few years of bad habit to break, but the good news is I think I have figured out a lot of what works and adding adjustments should help.  The shoulder did feel the difference in the pull and think that might take some time.  I am doing more with weights to get that thing where it needs to be, at least as best as it can be and we will just have to see as the catch and pull improves what it does to the shoulder.  Kinda sore the past two days though.
