Happy Monday gang!  I hope everyone had a great weekend.  I spend a lot of time on my bike.  5 hours over 2 days but that is nothing compared to what I have to look forward to starting in January 26th.

That starts the 12 weeks before IMAZ psycho training!  Our longest weekend is 7.5 hours on the bike on sat and then another 7.5 on Sunday.  I think my coack may be losing it!

I hope you all have a safe and happy new year!  Talk to you all tomorrow!

My training started yesterday. I got back in the water after a long 6 months off. I felt it in my arms at first, but once I got going I was okay. Today is my first bike ride in about 9 months. I'm going to do it on the trainer.

Oh, and my cat chewed through the wire on my bike computer. So, I'll just ride for a while to get close to the two miles for today. I have a feeling my behind won't let me do much more than that.

Hey Cere!  Yeah!!  Great job getting back into the pool!  I know what you mean about too much time in the saddle.  I have been promarity on the trainer for the past 2 months.  Getting outside this weekend was hard!

I got used to the nice controlled temperature in my house and especially no wind.  Plus, the bike I ride on the trainer is a road bike.  I took my tri bike out and just being in aero position took some getting used to again.  Are you wearing bike shorts??  If not, go out and buy yourself a pair.  That little bit of padding makes all the difference in the world!

Have a great ride!

Went out for a run/walk this morning...Much pain in my left knee...Knee loosened up as I went along, so I feel like it's going to get better. My contact for getting into a pool will be back this week and then I can begin to mix swimming in, as well. Increasing water intake. The way I felt this morning it's hard to believe this time last year I could run six miles!! But wait! That's looking in the past...Gotta look forward. Focused on first tri in March..

Hey Mike!   Great job getting out there today!  Don't overdue things on your knee.  Pain is you body's way of telling you that something is not right.

I'm glad you will be able to get into the pool soon.

Any fun NYE plans?  Have a safe night

Hope everyone was safe and that you all have a great New Year...Don't forget to eat greens and blackeyed peas!!

Hey guys...

I hope everyone had a safe and happy new year. Ours was quiet. Just went to a friend house and played games, ate stuff I should not have eaten and laughed a lot!

We left pretty soon after midnight so we could get on the road before all the crazy people. Slept until 10 which is really late for me. Today, our benevolent coach gave us a "do what you want" day. We think we are going to take the dogs for a long walk and go to a yoga class later in the day.

OK guys, I am not a big one for resolutions, but I am a HUGE believer in goals. I want to share mine with you and I hope you will share some with us.

  1. Plan my meals. We spend too much time, at 6pm saying to each other "What do you want to eat...I don't know, what do you want..."
  2. Stay away from the scale. I tend to obsess abut the numbers but it is really about ho my clothes fit and how I feel. We all know when we put on weight, we can feel it.
  3. Cut the junk! I am normally not a big junk food eater, but once I start, it is hard to stop. During the holidays I ate way too much junk. Now I have to break myself of the habit.
  4. Stick to the workout schedule! I may roll my eyes and complain, but if I want to cross the line at Ironman Arizona, it's what I have to do!!

I hope you all had a great day! Remember, it all starts with the decisions you made right now!

Have a great day.

Marcy

Happy New Year Everyone!

I did not do any exercise on Saturday,Sunday, or MondayCry  I was a complete slacker until today when I did a Spinnerval workout (fittingly enough titled: No Slackers allowed).  Needless to say I was only able to do 35 of the 45 minutes.  I did learn something about myself this weekend and that is if I do not work out first thing in the AM like I do during the week then I procrastinate until I do not do anything at all.

Here are a few of my goals:

1. As with Marcy I need to prepare foods, rather than wait until 7:00 to figure it out

2. Get to the pool first thing in the AM on Sat. and Sundays

3. Stick to a workout plan so I can finish a HIM

4. Train as I need to for the half marathon at the end of Feb.

I hope everyone has a great, happy and healthy New Year!

Stacy

No resolutions for me either - just goals. I have one big goal and it's to take better care of myself. That includes eating right, exercising and pampering myself.

I have to tell you guys that we implemented menu planning in my house about 6 months ago. I, too, was sick of the "what do you want for dinner" discussion and never having an ingredient on hand that we needed to make something. So, we started menu planning. Basically I sit down once every two weeks and plan dinner for the next 14 days. This pretty much entails pulling out a piece of notebook paper and writing down 14 items, then putting dates beside them. Then, I put that on the frige and we just mark off the items as they are made. Sometimes we may switch the dates around on a couple of dishes if the mood strikes.

It's not scientific at all and takes less than 10 minutes. But it makes grocery shopping SO much easier and keeps things from getting boring. Best of all, no more "what's for dinner!"

Great goals!  I agree with working out in the mornings.  I try to get bike and run workouts done in the morning, but logistically have trouble with swims.  The locker room at my gym in not great for getting ready.

I also totally agree with pampering yourself.  You need to take care of you.  For me, it's two things..massages and pedicures!  I go to massage envy once a month for a massage.  It's not too expensive.  I also do pedi's monthy.  If I feel good about myself I am a happier person.

Day one of meal planning tonight.  Chicken with brown rice and green beans.  Bought a nice piece of salmon for tomorrow.

Little steps will get mt there!

Biggest Loser starts again tonight.  I love that show!

Well, I was supposed to get in a good swim and a bike ride today, but hubby got stuck at work. Having a 3-month-old sure puts the damper on training plans. I'll have to squeeze it all in tomorrow.

Hello everyone!! I managed to get back from my vacation in one piece. I even managed a few work-outs while I was away, at least between eating and drinking everything in sight. But now I am rested, primed and ready for the season ahead.

I’ve got my plan imputed and managed to copy it all over to excel so that I can make nice print of it. (I love being able to post my progress on my cube wall at work). To be honest I am a little intimidated by looking at the training times I’ll need to be doing in a week or so. I am doing my best not to look to far ahead though and take this one day at a time.

At the moment I am still bikeless, but I do have a line on a few options and wondered what you guys think of what is available. First is a used 2006 Cervelo with Dura-Ace components for $1300 +shipping. This is from someone on the board. The other is a Felt S32 brand new for $1375 from the LBS. This bike would have a mix of ultegra and 105 components. Any thoughts?

First train session is tonight!!! I cant wait!!!

Hello everyone,

I got in the pool this morning and did 500m. Then set out for a 20 min run...My knee said, 'no!' No worries...Went to the doctor he said walk (since that doesn't cause any pain) and continue to swim...I'll also begin to bike...Still planning on the sprint in March...if I have to walk the 5K, then I'll walk! I'm digging this warm weather...

Hey Guys!  Welcome back!  Glad the vacation was good.  I know how hard it is to get back into the swing of things.  I was not even on vacation but am still having a tough time!

Mark, my advice on the bike is to go with the LBS.  Not that I think there is anything wrong wih buying a bike on the internet, but from the LBS you can be sure that the fit is correct.  They usually give you free tune ups too.  For the extra $75 that would be my advice.  Ultegra and 105 are good components.  Get used to the bike and you alway have the option to upgrade to the Dura Ace.  That's what I have been doing with my bike, slowly upgrading.  I gave a Trek Equinox 9 (his name is Cooper after Anderson Cooper because I am a big nerd!).  The bike came with DA rears.   This year, Santa bought me FSA carbon cranks and ceramic bearings.

I like the idea of posting your workouts on your cube wall.  My husband went a step (many steps actually) above that by buying a giant white board and writing our weekends 12 weeks out leading up to IMAZ.  It is sanding on top of the fridge as a scary reminder of what we have gotten ourselves into

Mike, excellent job in the pool today!  500 is what you will have to do for your sprint!  I am glad you got the knee looked at.  It is too early in the season to risk having a long lingering injury.  Listen to the Dr. and take it easy.  Walking will lead to running.  You are right, if you ave to walk the sprint, there is nothing wrong with that.  As a matter of fact, I have been passed by walkers!

Have a great night everyone.  Log those workouts!!

Marcy

Yeah I pretty much came up with the same conclousion. I posted a thread asking about the difference between the various deraillers and got some good anwsers and a very good link going in intricate detail. Pretty good reading if any are interested.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=100463&posts=6&start=1

So it looks like the Felt is it. Of course it helps that the S32 come in the fastest color...RED!! :-D

Got my first work-out in. WOOT!!! Yes its the little victories that matter.

looking back a bit I noticed everyone listed some of thier goal for the up-comming season. Mines a little late, but here are some anyway.

1) Be religious in logging my training and nutritional logs. Even when I screw up and have that Big Mac (god I hope not) I want to be sure I log it

2) Stay as far away from the scale as I possibly can. I don't consider myself that heavy, I figure currently I am just about 20lbs above were I feel I would compete at my best. But the last 3 months I have had several start/stops because I'd climb the scale too oftem and get fustrated when I didn't make the progress in that area I felt i should be. So this time I'm gonna be honest with my training, be honest with my nutrition and let my weight fall where it may.

3) Write a once a week e-mail to all my friends and familly documenting my journey.

4) Race-wise, I have signed up for the Lone Star Sprint march 29. My second goal is an Oly 2 around months after that. If that goes well I think I'd like to try for a full marathon in the fall. I'm thinking Disney in Dec.

Well I guess thats its for the time being. I hope everyone has a great evening.

Yes, red is the fastest bike!!  Mine is red too!  Glad you are going with the LBS.  The Felt is a great bike.

Great goals!  I especially like the part about being honest.  After all, the only person you are cheating is yourself.  I realized that a few months back.  It holds true for both the consistency of your workouts and your nutrition.  If you really want to eat a Big Mac, eat it, but know that on the back end, there will be a lot of work to do to make up for it

You are going to LOVE LoneStar!  I did the Oly last year and DH did the sprint.  Keith Jordan is probably the best race director out there.  It was a tough decsion not to do it this year, but it is two weeks before Ironman Arizona.  That will be the start of my taper.  We thought about going to Galveston to cheer everyone on, but really need to stick to our plan that close to IM.  There will be TONS of BT'ers there.  You really should try to meet as many as you can!

Very cool about keeping friends and family involved in your tri goals.  Have you thought about starting a blog.  There are lots of free sites out there.  I think blogspot is one of the better ones.  I really need to get my website started.  I really want to cronicle our IM journey.  I am a Mac user and they make it really easy to build a site and they host it for you too.

Have a great day and congrats on the bike.  Can't wait till you get it and can post some pics.  Bike porn is always great!!

Marcy,

What's your take on strength training. I did 5 min warmup on the stationary bike this morning and a 30 min high rep workout...then another 5 min on the bike. I was planning on doing this a couple of times a week. In your opinion, should I forego the gym and focus on the other disciplines?

Great question.  I am just now incorporating strength into my workout.  My coach has me mostly doing core workouts.  No real lifting but she says, and it makes sense, that the stronger your core, the longer you can ride, especially in aero position.  She also has me taking a yoga class once a week.  That has proven to be a great help with flexibility.  Hubby likes it too since it is usually him in a room full of women wearing spandax!

Yoga would be my first recommendation folllowed by core strengthening.  You can find lots of different workouts on the internet.  When I get a chance, I will look some up and post some.

Thanks. I've been a gym rat in the past, but my opinion is changing on what "strength" is. An early morning swim, concentrating on form and breathing gives me more than I can handle right now!!

I also have been interestted in possibly trying out yoga at some point. One question, what is the difference between yoga and pilates?
