SoI didnt have a very good bike fit yesterday- copied this from my blog

So after spending 3 hours at Transition cycle last night it was determined that I am the less then 1% of the population that will not fit on a tri bike

I would get a second opinion - and fast.  Is Transition Cycle experienced when it comes to fitting triathlon bikes?  Selling tri bikes and having experienced triathlon bike fitters in the same shop are 2 different things.  How many seats have you tried?  Keep looking.   If it were me, there is no way I would sell a triathlon bike in favor of a road bike.  Keep playing around with seat positions to see if you can increase comfort.  It takes some flexibility to be able to stay aero for extended periods.  When you say tightness what do you mean?  Maybe you just need to ride a bunch of miles in aero to get accustomed to it.  Just because you're tight during the fitting doesn't mean you won't get accustomed to the bike after a bunch of miles.  Frankly, I think the "1% of the population" line is bullsh*t.  Find another shop that has experienced triathletes on staff.   I am sooooooo glad that Gear West is my triathlon shop.

I went to transition becaue it is the best place around here.  He fits 3-4 people a  day.  EVERYONE told be to go to him.

I am kinda mad now and on a mission to find me a saddle- there are 100s of them out there- just because they dont stock it or havent tried it doesntmean there isnt one for me.  I called him today and he hasnt called me back yet- which really makes me mad too.

My problem isnt really the tightness- I didnt really realize I was that tight until he pointed it out- but its caused becaude wehn I lean forward in aero I have a LOT of pressure on my pelvic bone which I cant get away from in any of the saddles  I have tried- this is where I am "unique"...whatever.  So supposedly I am trying to not put so much pressure there and everything else gets tight....  I am looking at the Koobi saddle now though- gonna try one tommorrow.  I would seriously rather spend a ton of money on a new tri bike then make my bike a road bike.  I am a triathlete damn it!

ugh

I just returned from San Diego and my legs are smoked! I knew it wasn't flat out there, but wow. They have amazing roads for riding and it was beautiful. I was a bit worried coming straight from the trainer to open roads but I made it back in one piece.

We rode over 250 miles in 5 days with over 12-15k feet of climbing. we also did some trail running and swam at the pool where Michellie Jones works out (we didn't see her but we did join a couple pros for a workout). The 2 coaches that invited me to join are still there since they have early season races but 5 days was enough for me. If this doesn't make me stronger, i don't know what will. i'll put some info & pics from the camp into my log either today or tomorrow.

Hope everyone is doing well.

nice work. i'm with tammy, i don't think i could mentally do 2000 straight in a pool. i'm up to around 3500-4000 per workout, but that's completely broken up.

i did a 500 TT today as a practice run for an upcoming race. it went ok, could be better. i need to work on getting a stronger push off the wall, but my calf kept cramping up. anyone experience this? have a remedy?

Next time you're out there and could swing it, bring your shoes/pedals and rent a bike. There are great places to ride out there.

I find that when I push off the wall with just my toes it tends to trigger cramps later in the session.  If I push off more with the whole foot it seems to lessen the chances.  Not sure if that is the real solution though, but it seems to work for me.

Awesome work! Just keep working on it, and you will not be slow for long.

I will have to try to the whole foot push off the wall because I tend to get cramps while swimming also.

We had a meeting in Portland last year.  There are paths up and down the river that goes thru downtown that I used to run on while we were there.  Depending on where your hotel is you may have to run through some downtown traffic to get to the river.

Thanks for the info. I don't think that I am too far from the river.

I'm frustrated with my bike progress. I've been trying to add 5 miles each weekend to my long ride. Just finished a "death ride" of 50 miles in cold wind yesterday. First, I was out there five hours (3.5 hours riding time), and second, by the end of the ride I was beyond miserable (back/neck tired, really saddle sore). I do feel fine today (no really sore spots), although I'm quite tired. Rest day!! I'm training overall for IMFL '08. My first minor race is in three weeks, and I'm going to the Gulf Coast Half on May 10.

Mostly I'm just whining today, but it just seems impossible that I'll ever be able to ride 112 with enough energy to walk 26, much less run. I've never biked more than 65 miles (last summer).

I have a very good, albeit informal, coach. We'll be communicating more after he gets done with IMAZ in a couple weeks!

Biking milestones always seem insurmountable.  I remember the first time I went 60, then 80, then 100.  You always think, "man, how am I going to race this distance?"   Don't worry about it.  Time in the saddle will get your back and neck muscles accustomed to the aero position.  Its a long-term project.  Its not like IM is next week

Has been pretty quiet around here lately. How is everyone doing? Anyone have a race coming up soon?

Birkie, I followed your recipe (that you posted a while ago) and made a fruit recovery drink this weekend after my run/bike session. It was awesome! Thanks!

Bike question for everyone: My right hand keep falling asleep while riding the bike. Any ideas? Am I holding the handle bars to tight?

Take Care Everyone!

Glad you liked the smoothie recipe.  I'm trying something new with mine.  I sliced up and froze a bunch of bananas and filled several zip-lock bags with banana chunks.  Next time I make one I'm going to try using the frozen chunks to see how it comes out.  I have a feeling that the consistency will be a lot different and it might not be as smooth.  Thought I'd give it a try since we run out of bananas a lot.

Numb fingers and hands on the bike usually is due to bike fit and you're putting too much pressure on your hands.  I run into this problem on my mountain bike, but not my road and tri bike - probably because I'm resting on the aero bars so much.  Did a quick google and found this article.

I don't have to do any travelling until May 18 - unbelievable.  I need to take advantage of it and get in some good volume training.

I actually used a frozen banana in the one that I made yesterday. If I have bananas that are starting or have gone bad, I take the peel off and stick them in the freezer. Thay make for good snacks. So yesterday I used one of the frozen ones in the smoothie. I had to add a little bit more OJ becuase with all the frozen chunks of fruit, the blender was not able to mix very well. In the end, I got the same consistency as with using an unfrozen banana.

Does anyone add protein powder into their smoothies? If so, what kind and brand? When do you use it?
