stinkyhelmet - 2008-04-08 9:53 AM Does anyone add protein powder into their smoothies? If so, what kind and brand? When do you use it?

Yep. I think my original recipe posted earlier mentioned just organic soy protein.  I picked up a canister of vanilla flavor, hydrolyzed whey protein isolate that is rich in branched chain amino acids.  My chiropractor sells it and it is made by a company called All The Whey, Inc  (www.allthewey.com)  I like it better than what I used to use.

That was going to be my next question. If anyone has heard of or used All The Whey products, and if anyone else has read that whey protein isolate was the better choice. Their products seem very cost competitive, but more importantly very pure (i.e., has all the good things we'd want and nothing else).

How much protein do add to your shake? After what types of workouts? I was thinking of using it after the high intensity or long (2+ hour) workouts.

I just add one scoop (comes with container) to the blender - 22 g of protein.  I make smoothies whenever the urge hits, but often after 2+ hour workouts and always after 100+ mile rides.  Looks like they have a decent sale going on right now with free shipping.

I just watched Running on the Sun and recently read Ultramarathon Man. All I can say is WOW! The movie and book were very inspiring. I definitely recommend both. Then, I recalled we have 2 ultra guys in this group. You guys are amazing. I have a hard time covering 26.2 on foot.

Birkie - just read your Fall 50 RR. Congrats! That's amazing considering you came off of an IM and no ultra specific training. How long does recovery from something like that take? My wife and I participated in the 2006 inaugural race as a pair relay team. I thought these guys/gals running with the SOLO bibs were nuts. But they inspired me to try a marathon 2 months later.

I've been meaning to get the Running on the Sun movie - sounds like a good one.  Well, since I've only done one 50 miler I'm not sure I'd consider myself an ultra-runner.  I did that race primarily so that I could qualify to get into the lottery for Western States 100.  I need to take care of Kona qualification first, so I may put WS on hold until then.  Like my race report said, immediately after doing the 50 I didn't think I wanted to try to "race" one.  Then a couple hours later it didn't seem so bad, but a 100 miler seemed pretty out of reach.  Then the next day the lure of the 100 started up again.  Some day.

Seems like I didn't want to do much running the week after and I was on travel anyway so it was a good excuse to take a week off.  I had a hard time walking around that night and the next day.

Been rock climbing the last two days. Got an ultra in a month that I don't feel like I have been training for properly. Got a long run planned for tomorrow.

It's my rest/test week and am signed up for a sprint distance race this Sunday (first race of season) up in Whitewater. A co-worker asked me to join him as it's his first triathlon. Should be fun, and am looking forward to racing with a PM for the first time. Weather forecast is not looking good, though.

I bought their vanilla flavored whey isolate. Tastes good. Have you tried any other flavors?

I've tried other protein powders before and always had GI issues. This one, not one problem. It's probably b/c it's so pure, whereas the others have fillers that include milk based stuff (I'm somewhat lactose intolerant). Thanks for the tip.

How did your race go this weekend? I spent Saturday helping with a rock climbing school in the morning and then in the afternoon did trail work. We are trying to get all the downed trees off the trails for our race coming up next month. Today I got in a nice 10 mile run. Although, I was surprised that there was still several feet of snow on the trail on the North slopes. Another week or two and it should be mostly melted I hope.....

I ordered 2 more canisters when they had their sale on with free shipping (may still have the salie on?).  Tried the chocolate this weekend - tasted great.

I had a 10k race on Saturday but the weather was totally sucky (cold, wind, snow).  I was hoping to have a decent 35:xx race, but no one in our group was very excited about racing in that crap.  Ended up with 38:11  89/3449 OA,  10/228 AG.  Ok, I'll stop whining now

April is just about over.  That was supposed to be the end of the January mentor group time period, but I'm willing to keep checking our thread and answering questions or just keeping up with folks racing during the season.  I'll be seeing at least a couple of you at races (Steelhead and IM WI) this season.  Time to start ramping up the training.

How did your race go this weekend?

It didn't go as well as I had hoped. I was a bit disappointed in my bike/run splits but I reminded myself that it's only April and the race season has just begun. Weather, however, was good. It ended up being dry which is much better than Birkie's race weather.
