Subject: Saling4's Group - Closed for now.

NAME: Saling4 / Brian
STORY: 51 years old and started Triing approx. 1 year ago. Took me 30 years to get around to doing a Tri, but enjoying it now.
FAMILY STATUS: Married with custody of 2 grandchildren (time hogs...LOL)
CURRENT TRAINING: I train pretty consistently from one of BT's plans. Right now I am on a Du plan because I cannot bring myself to get into cold water.
THIS YEAR'S RACES: 2007 was my first year to Tri and I accomplished 4 Sprints. Could I have placed higher, maybe, but I enjoyed encouraging others as I may have passed them or walk with them if they are walking. Main point I had fun.
2008 RACES: I plan is to do an early Du and 2-3 Sprints and then an Oly in Oct.
WEIGHTLOSS: I lead a group in weight loss section called Team Skinny. We have been going for about a year now. I have lost 15 lbs and on the most part I am hanging at 150.
WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTOR: Fairly knowledgeable in health and exercise. I love watching people improve in small amounts at a time. I believe in achieving small goals often rather than just one huge goal at the end.

Any questions let me know.

Brian,
If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to join your group. I also live in Las Vegas and am planning on completing my first triathlon this April. I'm 30 years old, married, have 3 kids, and teach high school. With my crazy schedule, I needed a purpose to get out of bed every morning and exercise so I thought a triathlon sounded great. I just completed my first 5K this past December and am a proficient swimmer (I swam a year in high school), so I think the biking will be the toughest for me. If I do fairly well with the sprint distances this spring, I'm interested in training for the olympic distances one this fall. Chat with you soon.

O' Great Tri-Godfather,

I am humbled to be in your presence. I am glad to see you are leading a mentor group. It is great of you to share your knowledge with so many. Any mentee that signs up for your group is lucky. I am already in a group, but I would like to stop by and see what is going on every once and a while. If you do not mind.

Go Team Skinny!

Ok...let the questions begin.

1) I recently read Joe Friel's book the Triathletes Training Bible and it seems like he requires a lot more training time than the basic 13 week sprint program suggested here on this web site. Any recommendations on finding a good training program? I was just thinking of starting at week 5 or 6 on this web sites training program and working from there. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

2) How closely should I stay in my heart rate range? I've been trying to stay between 65%-85%. There are times when I'm jogging (particular uphill) and I end up outside of my heart rate range, so then I'm stuck just walking uphill. Should I be slowing myself down or should I push through?

Thanks for the advice.

Keep your heart rate low for now - 65 to 75 percent.  Walk often.  Pushing through will lead to injuries IMHO.  You would be amazed at the improvement by staying in low HR.

Joe Friel is great, but I think you need to start easier.  I would pick one of the 16 week sprint tri plans on this site.  Which Tri in April are you doing?

At this point the key is:  GO EASY....Get used to the training then incorporate a speed or Fartleks.

Hi
NAME: GoForAll2008/ Ime
I would love to join this group.
MY STORY: I'm a 34 year old Spanish mom of a 1 year old girl, happily married for 5 years to a "don't-believe-in-triathlon-or-running-stuff" man, but supportive whenever I enter a race.
I started running last year first of all because I was 67+ pounds over my ideal weight and thanks to my brother who is a passionate runner and on-off triathlete. Happily I took off 35 pounds, but I still have more to go.
With some races on my track (mostly 5 and 10k at a slow pace but not the kind of being the latest on the pack) and as many runners do, I've been thinking about training for my first tri on summer or autumm, just to keep peeling off the pounds and challenge myself.
Let me tell you that although I can swim (I don't drown, for that matter) I've been to the pool but swimming with fins, when I take them off, I can't move an inch! And that REALLY worries me a lot.
WHY YOU: I read some great stories about you coaching people for losing weight and now on the Tri discipline, so I hope I can join from Spain your training. I have access to a really good equiped gym, and I'm far from open water (a lake or ocean), and still a beginner on the bike area which doesn't scare me, but don't have a bike yet, just training on the spinning class.
GOALS THIS YEAR and beginning 2009: ESPN Half Marathon in May; Las Vegas Triathlon September; Walt Disney Marathon 2009; and at least one 5 or 10 k race a month 10 and 5k for fun and fundraising.

Welcome goforitall.  I think we can do some good and I will be doing the Sept Las Vegas Tri as well.  My philosophy is baby steps until you learn to walk.  Losing weight in my opinion is one of the best things you can do to increase endurance and speed (to a point), but set small continuous goals (1 lb a week?).  I will learn about your training more, but try to stay in the 65-75% HR zone most of the time with a few speed sessions later in training,

Look forward to chatting more.

There are 2 races in April that I'm interested in doing...
1) Iron Girl Triathlon- 400 m swim, 10.6 mi. bike, and 5K run- April 12th
2) and the Rage Triathlon- 750 m swim, 15.2 mi bike, and 5K run- April 19th

GoForAll2008- I'm glad that you are joining our group. I'm also planning on doing the September tri here in Vegas and am totally new Tri's. Congrats on the weight the loss; if you made it this far, I'm sure you will accomplish your goals.

Brian, I would love to join your group. I'm 49 years old, married with three sons, ages 9, 20, and 27, and one daughter, age 19. My 9 year old son plays select baseball and my 19 year old daughter has never had time to get a driver's license as she does professional theatre and I remain her full time chauffer. Last June (with a couple month break in baseball and my daugher our of state doing summer stock theatre), I decided it was time to doing for myself and started being more careful about what I ate and exercising. I've lost 25 lbs since then and hope to lose at least another 10 (I'm 5'9" and was down to 169 at Thanksgiving but am up a couple of pounds since). Last summer I started walking, found I could burn more calories swimming, so started swimming in our backyard pool. I saw a piece on the news about a 70+ year old women doing her first triathlon with her daughter, and it inspired me. So I decided to buy a new bike and started cycling as well. I've NEVER been any kind of athlete before, and absolutely hate the idea of running, so this decision came as a total shock to my family. (I actually didn't even tell my husband what I was up to for several months.) I was planning on doing my first sprint last October and was very disappointed when it was canceled (seemed like the best suited as it was for Race for the Cure, my mom is a breast cancer survivor, and a pool swim). I let my training lapse a bit but did do my first 5K in October (not very quickly but not last) and a 29 mile ride with my husband (whose training for the MS150) in November . I've really missed swimming so joined the gym last week and started back on Friel's First Triathlon Training plan. My husband got me a heart rate monitor for Christmas and I've been having fun playing with that and think it will help my training. I like the idea that you are fairly new to the sport, closer to my age, lead a weight loss section, and enjoy encouraging others. I'm not doing this to compete with anyone other than myself, to have a good time doing it, and to become more physically fit.

Hey old guy / greatest person ever!  Way to step up as a mentor!  Everyone is sure to benefit from your possitive, relaxed and fun attitude.  People, you have done right by asking this senior citizen for assistance in your training goals.  What he lacks in personal hygeine he more than makes up for in his bedside manner!  Good luck, and I'll be checking up on you Brian to make sure you're not hasseling anyone!  Good luck in your DU races!

Lufferly, Glad to have you aboard.  I see the beginnings of great things here so far.

If any of you would like to join the TEAM SKINNY weight loss you are more than welcome.  That team has been going for about a year.

Irongirl and Rage notes:  DO HILL TRAINING!!!  Both are hilly, if you want more info just ask as I have done both courses.  The lake at Irongirl stinks, but the water will be a nice temp (about 82).  The Rage is at Lake Mead and that water is COLD.  The swim got canceled last year due to high winds (did not break my heart).

If you are new to running run a little and walk a little.  Let your body get used to the change and increase distance slowly.

Hazmaster:  Thanks for dropping by to say hello.  I miss harassing you.

One other general note:  OPEN WATER SWIM is NOT the same as a pool at all!!

Your in Frank.  Welcome to this fun zone.  Nothing wrong with wading in your first Tri.  Was it pool or OWS?  Are you running your run mileage or walking or both?

Brian:

I would like to join your team, for a couple of reason, your age, I am going to be 53, you started recently ( haven't been doing it for years).

I was really into excerise and training last fall, then overtime started in November and now my schedule changed and I can't seem to find to right time to work out.

I have lost 60 lbs since last Januray and I am down to 212 as of this morning. I want to get down to 145 lbs.

I have a great fear of water, even after swimming lessons, they seem to be worse.

I want to do the triathon in St George in April 2008. I live in Salt Lake City. I am single with twor grown sons 26 and 22. One going to the University of Utah.

My real name is Sue and hope to hear from you

Hi Brian,

Can I still join your group? 2007 was my first year doing triathlons. I did two sprints and I loved it. I would like to do an Olympic distance this year. I am 46 and live in Colombia (South America). Last year I joined a similar mentor program and received great advice and support.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Best,

Helmuth and Gem  Sue, Welcome to the team. I think we can do some good things here.

I wanted to mention that if I ask a question or you want to ask a question that you don't feel right about mentioning in open forum you can PM me or send me an E-Mail ([email protected]).

Any question that I ask has a purpose such as height/weight/age/sex. If you want to lose weight I want to guard against losing 20 lbs a month (starvation diet) and take it slow. Age because we take a little longer to recover and metabolism slows down (eat smaller more meals. Keeps metabolism up).

There are a lot of components that we have to look at while doing Tri's so I will try to help you balance them out.

My philosophy is BABY STEPS. Take it slow and progress overtime rather than overnight.

Be sure to use your logs. They will go a long way in seeing how you are doing.

Almost forgot to say "GREAT" job on the 60 lbs Sue.  You will probably lose the next 20 fairly easy than the work starts.

Here goes!

Sex: Female

HT: 5'9"

WT: 173.4 this AM (was 194 in June '07)

age: 49

Best mile run time so far: 14min/mile (in my first 5K in October)

Best bike speed so far: 15mph

I think I could walk, ride, even swim for a really long time; I'm just really slow. I've never been a runner. I'm just planning on walking/running 30 minutes three times a week and keeping my THR at 65%-80% for the present, and hope I can get a little farther along each week. I'm a little tentative on the bike right now because I was in a bad accident in September and am still nursing an injured shoulder. I landed on my shoulder and head, hitting my head hard enough that I cracked my helmet and was knocked out for about 30 seconds. Thankfully my husband was riding with me. I'm very comfortable in the water. I used to teach kids swimming lessons and taught all my own kids to swim before the age of 2.

Next.first event type: My husband has training rides scheduled every weekend until the MS 150 in April so I'm hoping to do as many of those as possible (dependent on our kid's schedules).

I'm looking at the following for my first Sprint tri, depending on when I feel like I'll be ready.

3/8/08 Athens Tri 330m/14mi/3.1mi (pool swim)
3/30/08 Lone Star Tri 0.3mil/12.5mi/3mi (protected open water)
4/12/08 PlayTri 300m/10mi/2mi OR 500m/10mi/3.1mi (pool swim)
5/4/08 Tri Benbrook 300y/13.8mi/3.1mi (pool swim)

A little more about myself: I live in Spring Texas (about 30 miles north of Houston) and commute into town for my job as a legal nurse consultant (ie: I'm an RN that works at a law firm reviewing the medical aspects of cases).

Oh, and my name is Lisa, and I look forward to working with everyone.

Lufferly,  I am figuring a BMI of about 25.7.  IDEA: 19-25  Not to bad

IDEAL WEIGHT: 129-169 Depending on bones, etc.  You look well on your way to being a lean mean Triing machine.

A nice way to see where your runs should be:

Endurance Workouts Pace/Mile Pace/K
Recovery Jogs 14:10 to 14:40 8:48 to 9:07
Long Runs 13:10 to 14:10 8:11 to 8:48
Easy Runs 13:10 to 13:40 8:11 to 8:30
Stamina Workouts Pace/Mile Pace/K
Steady-State Runs   12:00 to 12:21 7:28 to 7:41
Tempo Runs   11:30 to 12:00 7:09 to 7:28
Tempo Intervals   11:21 to 11:45 7:03 to 7:18

Time/Interval
Cruise Intervals (mile) 11:16 to 11:30
(1200m) 8:24 to 8:35
(1000m) 7:00 to 7:09
(800m) 5:36 to 5:43
(600m) 4:12 to 4:17
(400m) 2:48 to 2:52
Spend the time in the slow zone.  It will make you faster.

Ok here I go exposing it all...

Sex: Female

HT: 5'2''

WT: 154 (I was 177 lbs. last year after having my baby, and would be very pleased to get to 135 lbs.)

age: 30

Best mile run time so far: 11:36 min/ mi. at a 5K in Dec.

Best bike speed so far: 15 mph, haven't done much biking so far.

Next.first event type: next event- 5K 2/23, but really looking forward to the Iron Girl Tri 4/13.

And may I recommend the nutrition log that is also available in the log section. I've only been logging for 2 days, but it really makes me think if I want to eat something if I have to log it. Oh- plus it is free as well.

Gem,

You are so brave to try a tri with such a fear of water. In high school, I could barely make it across the pool without drowning and rarely put my face in the water, but there was a cute guy that I liked who joined the swim team, so I did too. After 3 months in the very slow lane, I finally learned how to breath to side and the different strokes. This led me to become a swim lesson teacher (for kids and adults), which I did for 8 years.

So, if I may be so bold, may I suggest you just going to the pool to have fun and not thinking that I have to get so many yards in. If possible, join a water exercise class to help you get comfortable in the water (plus get exercise too) and then hang out/ swim a little after class. Plus, no matter where I have taken classes, the ladies in the exercise classes are so warm and supportive.

Best wishes,
Chem
