Helen, just take it easy and you will get back with a vengeance.  Pushing it will only prolong the problem.

I refuse to by the DEVILS cookies...I would eat them and eat them and eat them...LOL.

Hi Everyone - wow, we're quiet. Is it because we're realizing that spring begins tomorrow, and that means that summer (and tri season) is only weeks away? A bit shocking. Seemed like only yesterday that summer seemed like a year away.

I have an MRI on my foot next week. I was hoping the doc would tell me that I'm imagining things and to just go out and run, but of course he did not. We'll see. I do, though, need to get out of this frustrated funk and just go do things that don't require my feet. I can still lift weights.

LASIK - 2 thumbs up. Made my close up vision worse, though, but that was going to happen anyway. The halos at night are basically gone. I can see everything. This rocks. Can't wait to swim.

Gotta go -

Helen,  Can you still swim or water run?  If not weights will have to do.  Lighter weights and a lot of reps will keep some aerobic and endurance conditioning.

Helen, hang in there. Glad your Lasik was so successful. That's exciting. How much longer before you can swim? At least than you'll feel like you're doing something.

Good luck with your MRI Helen.

I am back to training. I chose one plan that should lead me to an Olympic distance in 16 weeks. I am now starting week 2.

Question for the group: do you follow any training plan? Has any of you followed one of the plans in the BeginnerTriathlete page (with times, distances, etc.?).

Thanks.

Helmuth

Tri, I've been working on the new BT Sprint, Basic 12 Week - HR Zone Based plan. Swimming, cycling, running three days per week for each (at least that's how it's supposed to work) with two days per week of strength training. The plan I was using last fall was two days per week per discipline which was very manageable timewise. I have problems trying to fit everything in with this plan but am doing what I can.

Helmuth,  I have used a few of the plans.  I have found them quite good and I try to follow them exactly,  but life happens and I adjust.  If you go through 1 I think you can confidently finish your race.

Helloooooooooo ?

I'm 'in recovery' right now.
Bone bruise to Metatarsal area on foot. Steroids. Gellin' . No running or biking. 2 more weeks of that then I can stop taking the anti inflammatory drugs, wait 3 days, and see what happens! If it hurts, I'm not better. If it doesn't, I am. Yay!

I've been a bit too slack on hitting the gym in non-foot pounding ways. So says my scale and my pants. Darnit. So now, as my gramma would say, "I'm reducin' " and trying to figure out how to get back to they gym more. No excuses, really!

I hope that you are all doing well. How are your seasons shaping up? Why is everyone so quiet?

Personally, I can't wait until LOST is back on TV again. Darn strike.

Helen, sorry to hear that you're still having problems. That must be really frustrating. Are you're eyes all healed up so that you can start swimming?

I'm so happy that spring is here. We've had wonderful weather and it's so nice to get back outside again. I had a great weekend with a 5K run (appropriately named the Muddy Trails 5K) on Saturday, a 20 mile ride with my husband on Sunday through the countryside (and yes, the cows), and a 1000y swim when I got home, the first 500y easily without stopping. I cut my run time by 1'12" per mile, so now I'm just really, really slow instead of really, really, really slow! But it's progress, all the same. And last year at this time, I wouldn't have been doing any of it, so I was happy with myself.

I'd love to do a sprint that's scheduled in my area on May 3rd but think I may just volunteer (still waiting for my son's baseball schedule to be finalized). It's a 500m OWS and I'm not sure I want to try that my first time out. There's an all women Super Sprint (200y OWS, 8mile bike, 2mile run) on Mother's Day, so I think I'll go for that instead. There is a mother/daughter category, so my daughter may give it a try as well.

Most everyone seems to be pretty quiet, looking at the logs. Hope that all is well with each of you.

SPRING has SPRUNG!

Definitely quiet so I just assumed that everyone was enjoying the great weather and everything was going great.

Helen,  Glad to hear there is a good chance you will be up and recovered in the near future....TAKE IT EASY!!

Luff,  You are somewhat right about OWS.  It can be intimidating, but untill you do it it stays a mystery.  The 200yd OWS would be great, but try to get some practice in first.

They are actually having three practice OWS for the tri with the 500y/m (can't remember which) and I am hoping to try to get to one of those (unless it's limited to those registered for the race). We used to do a lot of boating, so I'm used to swimming in lakes but I've heard so many horror stories, and I've always had a very healthy respect for the water. I used to scuba dive years ago, and one of things that was drilled into you is DO NOT PANIC! Hoping that comes to some use as well.

I grew up swimming in the ocean, did some diving a snorkling in parts of the world and water skied,  but OWS was a SHOCK!!  Panic, no, but I just forgot how to breathe and swim at the same time.  It was pretty weird.  In the pool I could swim 2000-3000 yds and take 3,5 or 7 strokes turn and breath.  In the OWS it was just weird.

My eyes are healed - I passed the 3 week mark last week, so now I can swim. BTW - I LOVE being able to see. Wow. No complaints. Looking at mountains I've seen almost every day is a new view now - and I can see more stars!

I'm hoping to be better when it is truly warm. But I do need to get off my tush and back to the gym.

If you can get to the OWS before the race, yup, do it. I don't know why it is such a different animal than swimming the same yardage in a pool, or swimming for fun for hours in a lake, but combining the two was oddly difficult.

Good luck!

having knee problems..

X-ray and MRI shows Osteoarthritis:

Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that is caused by the breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of one or more joints. Cartilage is a protein substance that serves as a "cushion" between the bones of the joints. Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative arthritis.

Treatment with synvisc....very expensive 250$ a shot. 3shots needed.

had first shot last thursday...pain today still at 5plus out of 10..

Okay.  So I do not want Osteoarthritis.  Hope the shots work NY.

Hi everyone,

There is a new mentor forum, open in April. What are the plans for this group? Will we keep the forum? Or will we disband and join other groups?

I did my first OWS today!! The skies were cloudy and it was 68 degrees, and the water temp was perfect. Brian, I understand now what you were saying about it just being "weird". I just couldn't put my face in the water and look through a sea of green. I never had to stop and did fine using breast and side stroke, but was disappointed I couldn't get it together to do freestyle. I think the most strokes I could take was about 12 (so I guess that would be about 10y!). I wish I had time to do the course again this morning but had to get to baseball practice. The course is open again tomorrow morning but we are expecting storms to come through. If not, I might give it a try again. I think I might actually be ready for my first tri!!

You will do fine Luff.  The swim will be a bit challenging, but just decide to get through it and on to the fun stuff.  It is amazing how not being able to see under the water changes your perception SO MUCH,  but I have done 4 OWS Tri's and it still is like WTF!!!
