Subject: Swimming/Motion Sickness and how to deal?
I know this has probably been asked before, but the search function keeps giving me an error code. So here it is.

On dry land, I tend to get motion sickness fairly easily. In the water, I usually (always) leave the pool feeling crappy. In my first two sprint tri's, I remember leaving the water feeling so awful and disoriented. In my very first sprint, I spent 9 minutes at T1 just trying to feel good enough to move again.........

I have some of the Sea-Band wristbands I'll try today, but not sure how long they'll last in swimming conditions. I've heard of 'Scopalamine' (sp?) as well.

What do you all recommend?? Thanks for any help!

If you've taken a break from the pool, that may also have something to do with it. I'm the same way with motion sickness. If I take a few months off of swimming I have to get back into it slowly and do shorter workouts for a few weeks. After about 2 weeks of swimming regularly I'm fine. I think it's my head getting used to the side to side motion again.

For every OW swim I use non-drowsy Dramamine and it does the trick.

Would you use the Dramamine even for an IM? I have been very worried about the motion sickness in the ocean as well, but didn't know if it would be worth it to take pills on the day of the IM for fear of tummy problems....

About half way thru this year, I started having issues with feeling sick when I got out of the pool.  I've been using the disposable ear plugs since then with good results.  I've even been wearing them during races. I find that at least one seems to fall out every time I do an OWS but it still seems to make a difference.

the wax plugs never fall out for me.  I actually forget to take them out in T1 and end up taking them off on the bike and stuffing them in the bento box (no littering!).

I get VERY motion sick.  Ear plugs have been a savior for me.  I get mine at Walmart.  They are rubber and insert pretty tightly into the ear canal.

I get bad motion sickness out of water too. For all my races and OW training, I took non-drowsy dramamine and ginger pills and wore wax ear plugs. I don't think it completely eliminated it but it did minimize it.

Did it work? For the two IMs I tried, I'm 1 for 1, 1 DNF not making the swim cutoff, and I did make the other.

I've used non-drowsy Dramamine and that's helped avoid motion sickness.

Ear plugs and nose clip.  I try to always wear them when swimming and they have helped me tremendously with nasuea while swimming.

Also, swimming in overly warm water has given me problems at times.  Is that an issue for your swim problems in the pool?

I did the ear plugs, and sea bands. Still sick. I'm going to try the Dramamine next. I'll give it a few more weeks to "get used" to it, but then I'm done. I get an upset stomach and feel dizzy for up to 2 days after a 500m swim, I can't do that anymore. I just swam again this morning, a measly 400m and I'm ready to puke right now, and I swam an hour ago. I'm so bad, if I stand on the Pier and just look at the ocean, I get sea sick, not to where I'm going to vomit, but I get dizzy, turn a little white, and my mouth starts to water like I'm gonna hurl. I can't believe a few years ago I used to do fishing tournaments on a 23 ft boat!!!!!

I tend to get dizzy or maybe it's motion sickness while swimming in the ocean, usually after 600 or 700 yards when the swells are up. I have to swim tarzan style for a few strokes, look at the horizon and then I'm usually fine for the rest of the swim (unless it's a long swim and then I have to do it again somewhere farther down.)

I've been feeling nauseous on my last 2 tris on the bike and run, but thought I had just swallowed too much water on the swim or drank too much before the race. Never associated it with the swim or motion sickness. Never heard of the wrist band thing but I think I'll look it up.
