Subject: Needed: Triathlon Stats
Hi to all! My name is Stephanie Graves and I'm a Student from Seattle, Washington and an amateur triathlete. I am currently working on a statistics project for my culminating math final that will compare triathlon performance (in running, swimming, and biking individually and on the whole) with athletes Body Mass Index. Needless to say, I am dire need of said statistics and would be grateful if you could take a minute to email me the following information:

1. Your Gender
2. Your Age
3. Your Weight (in pounds)
4. Your Height (in inches)
5. Your Calclulated BMI (for help calculating see: www.wikihow.com/Calculate-Your-Body-Mass-Index-(BMI). )
6. Recent times for running, swimming, and biking in an Olympic Distance Triathlon as well as an overall time for said race

My email address is [email protected]. Feel free to field any questions you may have to me and please pass the word along--the more stats the better. Thank you all for your time and I look forward to hearing from you. Happy Holidays!

-Stephanie Graves

I wonder if BMI vs body fat % would have different results as many of us are muscular and thus have high BMIs but low body fat %. BMI for some athletes are very off as to telling health and fitness and if they are overweight.

I agree that in this group, it may be best to use body fat %.  However, using BMI  gives you something to write about  in your report/reflection Smile  And not everyone here knows their body fat %, and who knows if the one they do know is accurate

Good luck!  The last project I had to do before graduation was a statistics project.   I cringe just thinking about it!

*For what it's worth, I hate BMI now. According to that, I'm borderline obese.  My body fat is about 16% right now and I'm about 10-15 lbs from the lowest I've weighed as an adult

Wouldn't the difficulty of the course and temperature at race time affect race times as well as BMI ?

Another variable not considered is distances..not all Oly distances are the same. Maybe pace would be better or more accurate.

Weather, terrain, all that effects times.

I haven't done a classic Oly distance yet but one race where the bike was a bit longer and the run shorter ("Long Course"), which catered to my poor running shape

swim 1096 yards: 21:39
bike: 32.93 miles: 1:53:39
run 5 miles: 46:00

The total for the race was 3:01:20

Good luck with your project! Sounds fascinating. I'm in the wrong field...
