Pre-race routine:

Staying at the in-laws. Went for a pre-race dinner at Old Chicago of Italian Nachos and a hefeweisen. Then watched my niece and nephews play in the water fountain at the mall.

Got a pretty good nights sleep, as good as it gets on a 30 year old water bed.

Got up at 5:30 to catch our bus to Boulder. DH took us (DS1 and I did this one together) to SBux for a chai before dropping us at the bus. DH had no interest in dealing with 50,000 racers this year ;-)

Relaxed on the bus ride and finished my chai. Once we got to Boulder I hit the porta potty and tried (unsuccessfully) to find my SIL. We stood as the military corral went by (with lots of cheers) then hit the porta one more time before getting in to our corral.

Comments:

This was meant to be a fun run with my son. It was more of a challenge for him because it was his first 10k. He did great. We spent a lot of time zig-zagging through the walkers. He probably made it about 1.5 miles before he needed to walk the first time.

There were people lining most of the course and people had their hoses/sprinklers set for the racers to run through. Didn't see as many spectators offering food this year but we thought it might be because we started further back. DS1 wants to try to qualify for an earlier wave next year, yea!

When DS1 and I started SIL was at about mile 3, she finished about a mile ahead of us so we made up some pretty good time trying to catch her. After we got word that she was done DS1 didn't stop again. The end of this race goes up a hill as it turns in to Folsom Field, then you run about 3/4 of the track to the finish. As we entered the stadium DS1 said he didn't have any more to give. I told him he just had to get part way around the track and he said he couldn't. I told him he could, that everyone was watching. He did. He rocks.

What would you do differently?:

Absolutely nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

After the finish there is still a lot of walking to drop of the timing chip and get your "lunch" bag and beer/soda etc. We made it through those lines then sat down so DS1 could rest a bit. After a short rest we got him a race shirt and went to find SIL.

We took the bus back to Aurora where DH met us with.... more SBux!

A great day spent with my son and he was happy to tell people (the waitress, his g'ma, his aunt, the guy at the LRS) that he'd run 6 miles.

This is a fun race and a great first 10k!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ran at DS1's pace, was happy to do so.

Event comments:

This is the 3rd largest running race in the US. It is very well done and is a 10k block party.

Nice run! Love the stadium picture.

I think that I may have detected a theme:  Old Chicago of Italian Nachos and a hefeweisen… SBux for a chai...

Wow. I really didn't know this was so huge. I have wanted to do it, but that's a ton of people.

I'm so glad you were able to do this with your son. Really excellent. Good job to both of you.

Super cool to run with your son, TJ!  I can't believe all the spectators in the stands, that would be so awesome to finish to!  Congrats to him on rocking the finish
