I recently switched over from a road bike to a tri bike and also added an xlab behind the seat bottle cages to the tri bike. My question is for those of you with behind the seat cages when you go to grab the bottle and replace it do you remain in the aero position or do you situp? I'm guessing you would want to remain aero it just seems a bit sketchy to me.

I can't stay in aero when I grab them. I can't even stay in aero when I grab the one attached to the frame.

I always sit up...I think I'd need to come out of aero to drink, so might as well sit up to grab a bottle.  I'm not even sure if my arms are long enough to stay aero and grab...and I'm 5'8.

I don't have one, but I'm regularly passed on race courses by people with them. Actually, I'm  regularly passed on races courses by people without them, too.

Everyone I've seen use one has stayed in the aero position when replacing the bottle back in the cage.

I have one and I sit up and grab it from areo. A great way to get some experience with grabbing it from areo is when you are on a trainer. It will get you used to where it is and how to put it back.
I rarely use my bottle cage on my downtube. This weekend I had to and I almost crashed trying to use it because it's been so long since I had to.

I sit up to grab mine and empty the content in my aero-bottle that is in front between the aero-bars, so I just have to do it once per bottle. I get out of aero to do this.

I use an aero drink bottle for long rides so I sit up long enough to fill it up from a bottle.

I sit up as to avoid a potential crash, it's a bit unstable staying down on the bars and reaching backward at the same time. I also would not worry about it in the least, it will make no difference in your time if you sit up on the bull horns to drink, don't let fancy articles tell you different.

I got one this summer and have to sit up to find the cage and feel my way around the cage in order to get the bottle in right.  I'm practising during trainer sessions this winter so that on the road I can hopefully stay in aero or at least get the bottle back in the cage within a few seconds (instead of what feels like minutes now!).

I finally got mine set up... I use the Minoura double-bottle saddle mount on a Profile Tri-Stryke saddle, turned upside down (the carrier, not the saddle, just for you goofballs out there -- so the bottles are horizontal and pointing forward), and Profile Kage bottle cages. I've tried the standard method, with the Minoura, an old Trimble, and the Tacx, and all of them were awkward to reach for the bottle, such that I HAD to get out of aero to do it. But with the bottles mounted as I have them now, it's very comfortable and takes no strange body contortions to accomplish the task (it's mote like reaching under my leg rather than trying to reach back behind my...), and I can stay aero while reaching.

I'll see if I can get a pic posted tonight.

I sit up to reach the rear bottles.

I have a Profile Design (found @ http://www.sprinttriathlons.com)bottle cage and during the Wisconsin IronMan one side almost broke off -- which would have sent the bottle through my spokes. Thankfully, someone riding behind me noticed it and told me.

Please do, I also use the Minoura, on a Fizik, but can't visualize what you did

You mean the "behind the seat water bottle ejection system?"

It took me a long time to be able to stay aero and grab a bottle, and even now I'm careful because I don't exactly hold a really straight line, but can do it without fear of losing control. My first season I would actually pull over to drink!

I can grab a bottle from a rear cage easier than from my seat tube because room is tight in my small frame size, but truth be told, sitting up to drink gives me a quick stretch that I don't mind doing when training; I'd only stay aero to drink when racing.

I got a better idea!

NeverReach Hydration System!!!

From looking at the website, I decided I am going to try out the NR system.  It looks like the way to go, plus the late, great Blazeman used this system before he passed away.  I'll be using it this weekend!

I added one in August as I drink a lot and wanted to ride longer w/o refills.

I can get them out easily but getting them back in was more challenging. I honestly think it depends on your body proportions as most men have longer torsos and arms then women.

I've been only using the behind my seat water bottle holders on the trainer to practice taking bottles in and out. I can do it much easier and will be better once I get outside riding on my tri bike. Aero or not? I honestly can't remember but think out in aero, sitting up to put back.

Folks, it's not the end of the world to sit up to take a drink. The momentary non-aero position will not ruin your race, for the love of God!

It's a great system!! I've had it for a couple of seasons without any issues and it worked flawlessly at IMWI this year!

Thats the drawback of the behind the seat bottles. I can easily reach while in aero (Profile Design type), but do practice carefully! Its easy to lose the bottles though; you'll see all kinds on the race course which alerts you to the bumps.....

I sit-up as it is much safer for myself and those around me. Remember it is not just your safety that can be affected during those momentary lapses of total control.

Be safe
