Hmm, no advice for me?

I did my last long brick workout today (40 ride, 9 run, 2 walking home up the big hill at end of run), which was a heck of a lot longer/more challenging than any brick I've ever done. A few more days and taper starts. I guess this is as good as it gets!

Gail, I'd say just be true to your taper.  I've found that going into a race well rested makes a lot of difference in how you feel - which translates also to mental energy.  That's how it works for me anyway.

Oh yeah almost taper time! I got up at 5 on Saturday to do my long ride since my parents were coming to visit. I had a great ride and was almost 2mph faster than usual on the same route than I was 2 weeks ago. Followed that with a 4 mile run. Then I did my last long run on Sunday, 14 miles. I was really excited at the end of my run yesterday, I felt a real sense of accomplishment that I had completed a benchmark part of my training. I will continue to ride a lot during this week since I am off all week. I also will keep my weekly runs the same as always and increase my swimming. I can recover from riding pretty easily so I don't mind laying down some serious miles this last week, then next week I'll start my taper. I am planning on doing the infamous 45"/2'/45" brick on Wednesday to get a feel for my bike pacing. Still can't believe its less than 14 days till race day!

It is officially taper time for me. Race is 9 days away. Can't decide if I am more nervous or more excited. Most of my nightmares right now have been centered around the swim. I keep chanting to myself just relax, breathe, and keep going forward and you will be ok. Thanks goodness for wetsuits too, hopefully that will help. Wow, 9 days.

I did a 40 mile bike, mostly hills, on Sunday, and a 20-miler on Monday, ran 10 on Tuesday then played basketball in our league on Wednesday. Tonight is a 25-50 brick followed by NOTHING tomorrow! And then the fun starts. Scheduled to do short hill repeats in my 'hood in Omaha on Saturday for about 20-25 minutes then a 90-minute bike, 5-mile run brick (riding my bike up and down the trail, finishing with the `Maverick Stampede' 8K then riding my bike another 20 minutes home. Wife thinks I'm stupid.)

I just want the race to be here already. So I can start prepping for the next one. Ugh.

What race are you doing???

Wildflower.  My training plan this week actually says, "Wildflower Long Course is hella-hard and everyone knows that ... You keep moving forward steadily all the time and keep the calories and liquid coming in and then you finish what is arguably the second hardest half IM in the US."  I don't know about that -- I suspect Auburn and Silverman are both harder -- but this will be a big challenge for a first HIM (considering I've never even run a complete Oly...).

I have felt pretty good about my training, but I still feel so out of my league for this race (Wildflower).  I had a chance to preview the course, and it's about what I expected in terms of difficulty -- it will take me no less than 7.5 hours, probably closer to 8.  I didn't realize you go straight up a huge hill each time out of transition (I knew about the one at 40 miles on the bike course, though, and it is appropriately named Nasty grade).

I am a new and slow runner and just did my second-ever half marathon on Sat., and it took forever and left me feeling a bit discouraged.  Trail run, though, and got stuck behind about 200 people all walking up the big hill on the single track, so had no real choice...and once walking, it's hard for me to get back in the run groove and end up taking unnecessary walk breaks.

I would love some advice on the mental part of this, how to gut it out on race day, because I am starting to feel like those ice skaters who train really well but fall down at every major comp.

It's been awhile since I've posted on this thread. Sorry. My coach has told me to make index cards with positive thoughts and affirmations on them and study them every day the week before a long event. That way, during times of mental weakness during the race, you can play those thoughts over and over in your mind to get through those valleys. She suggested things like "This is tough, but I'm a whole lot tougher" (my favorite), "Breathe, smile, surge" "I have trained hard, I deserve to do well" "The pressure is on all the others, I have nothing to lose". Stay positive. Don't let the negative thoughts take over when you are suffering. You will get through it. And you'll probably surprise yourself how well you will perform. It is truly amazing what one can do on an adrenaline rush!

Ah you'll do fine! Just remember, it's all repetition.

In the water you stroke, stroke, breathe, stroke, stroke, breathe, repeat.
On the bike you just pedal, pedal, pedal, pedal, and so on. I do four-counts. One-Two-Three-Four, and repeat. Sometimes I'll even try to count my four-counts.
On the run I do cadences. One two three four, breathing in on the one-two and exhaling on the three-four.

And when I get tired, I refocus and start doing cadences and focus on breathing.

Takes the mind off the actual race and puts it back on your form.

Well I survived my long run, the Boston Marathon. I met Dick and Rick Hoyt at the expo and got a signed and personalized copy of their book. Haven't decided if I'll do my HIM next weekend, but I had a great cycling workout today and felt great, so it's looking good (just noone expect anything fast).

As far as strategy goes, since I'm not a great swimmer it is easier for me to calm down and settle into a groove/rhythm and not blow it out. Once I get out on the bike, I just try and focus and keep me thoughts in a box from now to the next aid station or scheduled fueling (Gu, eletrolytes, gatorade). I try and stay there thru the bike and for at least the first half of the run, then if you still have it in you crank it up and finish strong.

Exactly one month today until Ironman Boise 70.3!

Lucky for me I have a taper Olympic on May 18th so this month is purely a nutrition planning focus!

Hope all those doing thire forst HIM this weekend have a BLAST!

I just finished my base.  recovery week this week, then two build cycles before my HIM.  The training continues to progress.  I'm still worried about the run.  My left foot has started hurting and achilies tendons are sore.

Good luck to Gail, and everyone doing theirs this weekend.  GOOD LUCK! !!  May you have an easy swim, smooth roads with no wind, and good footing.

Thanks for the good wishes!  My taper was unfortunately interrupted by the SoCal wildfire this week -- the fire started at about Mile 31 on the route I posted at the top of this page, and much of Miles 1-10 and 25-50 have been burned or were evacuated.  My house is first in line to burn down, so I took my cats, bike, and grandma's antique watch and got the heck out when the fire hit the ridge behind us (pix in my training log).  It has been a very difficult week, but we are fine and back at home now!  I am very tired, but I will head up to WF tomorrow and enjoy the race as much as possible.  Certainly it puts things into perspective.

Good luck to everyone else!  Hope your training and taper are less traumatic!

Glad to hear the fire missed your house, Gail.  My wife's parents live in San Luis Obispo, CA, and have had a few near misses...

Good luck this weekend!

Mandy's racing as well.  Who else is racing this weekend?

And one month out from Black Bear as well! I think my training's come along pretty well. I'm hoping to ride the bike course a couple of times before the race. I feel like I need to get a couple of longer bricks in during the next few weeks as well...

Good luck and happy training, racing, and tapering everyone!

Glad you are ok, and what a trooper - there is a fire coming and the bike made the "must save" list!  That is tri-dedication!

Perhaps I will see you at IMAZ as I am in that on Nov 23rd as well!  I

am not as adventurous as you as it looks like Boise 70.3 in June for me followed by Mountainman 1/2 in July and perhaps SOMA 1/2 in October before IMAZ.  Lucky for me most races are in AZ so I travel very little.

Well, I had a lot of fun at Wildflower!  Left the firemen in the driveway and hoped for the best ... took the "race" nice and easy, and definitely finished in "comfort and style," as my coach says is important at your first half, although it was soooo comfortable I really didn't feel sore, tired, etc., just very hot.  70.3 is not as long as I had imagined.  Next year I will push it and probably take an entire hour off my time!  Got to see Macca et al. heading down the final hills on the bike as my wave headed up the first hill, new experience camping with our club, and just enjoyed being out there all day (and I mean ALL day) with the other athletes.

As to the benefits of having a coach, can't say enough.  When I called to debrief, he'd already gone through the results page and done all the math, so he knew what my placements were, speeds, etc., before they'd posted anything but the actual splits.  Of course, he had a good guess anyway because he ran into the finish chute just as I passed him on my bike on the way into T2, and then he was waiting with the team at Mile 7 on the run...it makes a big difference when someone is there to cheer for you, hug you at the end, and say he's proud of you.  I [heart] my coach.

Thanks to everyone here for all the support!  Looking forward to hearing from/cheering for the rest of you!
