Subject: Training with a hangover?

Just curious, does anyone elses here train with a hangover?  I have a love affair with wine and cheat on her with vodka....as a result I find myself hungover from time to time when I have to train.  My wife even bought me "warning - traning with a hangover" shirts to wear......... So am I the only dork that does the run/bike/swim hungover on occasion?

And yes, I have to swim 1.5 miles and run 4 miles tonight and I'm a little hunover fromm imbibing 75% of a 2005 Stags Leap Artemis cabernet............mmmmmmmmmmmmm cabernet......

Cant say I never do anymore, but really prefer cutting it out vs degrading the quality of workouts (though 'angry' hung over bike sessions on the CT are ok once in a while.)

yea, I've done my share of training while hungover. Anymore I'll keep those days to an easy run or bike and bring water. This is going back several years, but I remember being hungover while racing an Olympic tri. Swim and bike went pretty well...but I really struggled with the run. At the finish I was taken to the med tent and given an IV of saline. Seemed to perk me back up...but I was never that stupid again. Need to be careful.

If I go out and have good time w/ booze involved I try to keep it to a night where training is not heavy the next day. Or adjust me training schedule a bit if I have a big social event on the calendar.

One of my best runs this winter was after a Christmas party which I stayed at until 1:30 and had, literally, countless glasses of wine.  I met some BT friends the next morning for a 9 miler.  I started the day feeling tired, clouded, and foolish.  At the end of the 9 miles (at 10 degrees!) I felt refreshed and clear.  It was quite magical, really.

I also find running after happy hour is awesome.  Never get to the hungover part.

(and of course I drink lots of water to try to minimize effects...)

Doesn't happen often these days, but whenever I do have a hang over I make it a point to do a work out ... all the while focusing on hydrating.

I believe it helps work it out of your system.

The alternative is to lay around all day feeling like a slug.

picked the once per month (cuz you did not have an option for fewer) but training has definitely cut my alcohol consumption.....

it was at an all time high last summer - now I had a couple of sips of wine over the weekend and that was the first in months.....

even without a hangover my body just says no, you cannot drink and train

I've raced with one (see my Jingle Bell 5k from December), but the hangovers are very few and far between.

I did a 10-mile run the morning after a summer rehearsal dinner (not mine); had about a 12-pack of carbo-loading and 4-hours sleep the night before.  Pure hell throughout, but got through it and after a recovery shake was ready to rock and roll again through the wedding (yes bar was open BEFORE the ceremony) and reception.

I put once-a-month, but more like just a few times a year...

The wife, a friend, and I have all experienced the magical hangover run. We all felt the same nastiness before we started and as we ran it turned into one of the best workouts. btw, no one has tried a brick or 20 miler in this condition to test this fully.

Ugh, I did it a couple of weekends ago - and nearly bonked on my pitiful 30-mile ride! I do not recommend it and don't plan on doing it again.

That is an excellent way to run a wedding IMO.

I have really cut back on drinking, but I have done my share of workouts hungover. I do not recall any magical moments like those written above. I remember being miserable, but I would rather be miserable and productive getting a workout in than miserable sitting on the couch.

I do recall golfing some pretty darn good rounds hungover. There are a lot of mental aspects to golf, and keeping your mind free from distractions is key. I seem to do better when I concentrate on making contact with the ball and not soiling myself while doing it.

I learned last year, during my first season of training, that I need to decide between happy hour and training. A beer and a couple of shots on the way to ride does not work out well for me.

I also have been drinking less now that I am training more so I chose once a month. I played Ultimate all through college though so I am used to playing hung over. All tourneys are two day events with parties planned for Sat night. Sunday is usually pretty brutal, at least for those of us in the beer-bracket.

If done the same day (not recommended).

Make sure you get lots of fluid in in order to stay hydrated.

I would advice stationnary bike or gentle swim, definitely not running.

Also, avoid training outside during winter as alcohol tend to make us feel like it's warmer outside than it really is

If done the day after (morning) and you are still hungover it means you really drank a lot.
Make sure you drink a lot of water.

Training the day after absolutely reduces the hangover but the session is usually not a quality one.

usually, I never trained after a hangover but now finds it's much easier resolved by not drinking at all.

Also, wake up early, so you will go to bed early at night and avoid the temptations of bars, long dinners, etc.

Food is fuel and Alcohol is like putting mustard in a car engine: not quite a good fit.

Since they say "train the way you race", I'm wondering if you're going to do IMC hungover.

First off - I second the need for one of those warning shirts. Since I have started training for this season (Nov) of last year I have really tried to remove all drinking from my life. That never being the case I try to have one glass followed by a glass of water and so on... My friends typically rag on me for it, but I usually give them a call the next morning when I wake up for a run or bike.

On to story time - I did a 30 mile ride the day after a long night of beer pong and needless to say the people within the group were glad that i was at the back of the pack. Ate a quick snack - downed my water and I was ready to go. Those were the good ole days.

I'm sorry to say that I am probably a "functioning alcoholic" and I train with an hang-over quite frequently. Usually, by the end of a strong workout my hangover is gone. I've raced this way too... Most recently last Saturday. 20 mile races with hangovers are tough at a 6:47 pace, but doable - trust me!

I've also trained on for extended times while being on the wagon... The problem is that when I'm not drinking, my body craves sugar and I replace the sugars found in wine with those found in junk-food...

So, for me it is a basic case of: Choose Your Poison. Drink up and be somebody!!

I'm in sales and take people out frequently, often drinking.  I've had to deal with the issue of not wanting to workout the next day.  Often I'll take people out a couple of times a week which kills that night.  My only solution has been just to suck it up and train while hung over or at least feeling slow.

Now one a different note; how many have trained/worked out while drunk?  I've come back from a few customer outings and had the desire to mountain bike or run.  Both started off ok but I tell ya, it is way harder.  Cut your normal routine in half or you won't make it back.
