Kappie and Josh: all that talk about drinking and losing weight....makes me want to hit the bottle!  Maybe a few shots would help me get off this 2 pound sea-saw!  Too bad hangovers don't mix well with tri-training

Saling: nice brick!  Did you crave an apple after it?

I'm watching Will Wonka and the Chocolate Factory....."I've got a golden ticket!"  I still love this movie no matter how many times I watch it.

Yeah, recently it seems to be the only reason I'm losing weight, unfortunate side effect is hangover, of course. Though, hovering over the toilet is probably the real reason...

Willy Wonka, heh? Is it the '71 version or the one with Johnny Depp? I like the older version better, with Gene Wilder. Much better character development I think.

Yeah - anniversary!

You know I'm still here cause I love you Saling (even if you don't eat...)

Actually, thanks so much for keeping this organized and not flaking out on it.  Cool to have a group to go to.

Anyone thought about what we should name the April thread?

Alright peeps,

I'm getting geared up for the first run of the season, at least for me. Already starting to feel sore from having taken the last 6 days off. Tomorow back to the skinny of it. and still sub 190 today, @ 188.6 lbs. As to the run, I hoping that in the next wk it'll be warm enough so my lungs won't hurt, around high 50's low 60's. Will have to keep an eye on the weather. Right now it's raining and a little chilly, so... I wish I had a treadmill, then at least I wouldn't have had to stop this winter. But I'm already checking the surrounding area for a new running path. Right now the one I use is a 1.4 mile turnaround in the neighborhood. where I do about 3-4 laps, equaling about 4.2 - 5.6 miles. I've already found two other paths that include some hills (elevation about 50 ft. or more) and then a down hill slope about the same. Then there's another that's about 4 miles w/approx. same ele. If I could push myself to do 2-3 laps on one of these, then... This yr I'm hoping to concentrate a lot on running to break through the 4.2 mi. plateau I was on last season (in my own defense , however, I was doing a lot of brick work). I think that a different route (longer, and more intermediate lv) might help. During this off season I've been working very hard on my quad's so I hope some strength and endurance will be the beni's reaped.

I saw another thread labeled "April fool's biggest loser" Though I didn't read any of the posts, it could have been a mention to another weightloss forum or something about the tv show. But I think... since April showers bring May flowers, we'd have to be fools to run in the rain. Also considering they try to adapt race schedules due to inclement weather, right? Why not something geared towards "April fools' TRI"?

Yeah, the problem with the alcohol diet is I find it impossible to train with a hangover.

Have to agree with you on the Willy Wonka. I love Johnny Depp, but I really couldn't figure out why they would remake the movie at all since Gene Wilder was so awesome in the first one. I also liked the oompa loompas better in the first.

Definately, better character development by all acounts. The kids, Oompa Loompa's, parents, the whole world portrayed when the search for the tickets started off. It seems that despite developments in set design and filming (cinematography) has made needed improvements for other plot development in today's high paced world of visual stimulation. The new version kinda sucked.

O.k. here's a question to the group --???--

I think I have weak ankles. If I take an extended break from running then start back up, they usually ache, and swell, and there is pain during walking about 20 min after. However, after say... a month of training on them (running) they get a little stronger and the aches and pains go away. I'm thinking this is due to the deconditioning of taking a break and the tendons and muscles assoc. with the ankle are traumatized from all the repeated force of pounding into the ground or treadmill or whatever. And it's this that makes me think that they are weak ankles because it can happen on any surface and that it seems only to get better with time on the track. I've also wondered about correct running technique, but I 1. run on different surfaces, 2. have proper footwear (socks & shoes) 3. I don't pound my feet with heavy steps 4. I'm slightly tilted forward for correct posture 5. and my stride is normal for my height and weight.
Right now there are two things that help the pain and swelling aside from anti inflammatories (IBU 800's) those are an ankle stabilizer, and warm hot baths (and yes sometimes I have to use Epsom's Salts) to soak the ankles. So what are some of the things, if any, that you guys could suggest to help? I've come to the realization that it's something I'm going to have to live with if I keep this lifestyle up, but if I could somehow shorten the down time that would be awesome.

Have you tried doing ankle strengthening exercises with an elastic band? (just type in ankle strengthening in image google search and you'll get some pictures of exercises)

Everyone has a weakness.  Just take it easy til your ankles ramp up to your training (appears you already know this)  I personally have weak shins and am very prone to shin splints unless I ramp up slowly and take it easy.  OVER TIME (like 3-4 years) my shins have gotten stronger, and I don't have as many problems but I am still very careful.

Be ready for your first few runs of this year to feel really crappy until your body gets back into the groove.

Yes, sort of. If calf raises count. I mean they have to help, right? I think, and I apologize for leaving this out earlier, it also has a lot to do with me be able to crack my ankles too. Does anyone have arthritis or the beginnings of it in the hands? If you feel pressure in your joints like the need to crack them, and then you do, does it feel better? Well, I crack my ankles, and it's probably loosened the tendons and ligaments to the point that the pain is not only chronic but jsut something I'll have to live with untill I stop cracking them. Duh (me)! But yes in my training there are standing calf raises utilizing a resistance band technique. I also include squat calf raises, lunges, and yoga. All of which, in some way help to strengthen the use of the ankle.

I'll have to try this one. How about any any pre or post running tips that may help to reduce inflammation before it starts?

Yeah, if any kryptonite right? You know I've heard a few people talking about shin splints, but I've never seen one. What exactly are they? Are they like (soccer) shin gaurds? Or close to it?

Boy, I'm dreading my first run, only because I know it'll look like a couple of monkey's _crewin' a football. But I'm also begging for it. I always feel great after a good 4 miler, so... You're right though. That is the way to do it.

Well I don't think redoing a classic is sooooo bad, it's all the new age crap they used. The Wilder version just did it soooo well, this pix in particular didn't need a face lift.

in reality my weigh in this am means i have one pound to go before i hit the magic 10 and a half stone (147). sweet then on to my new target on 143, which will mean i will have lost a stone and be back to where i was at some point a while ago. hoping that by june 7th (sissie's wedding) that i'll be 145; also going to start doing q's lose the love handles challenge once i hit 147.

anybody else excited?

I've also been wondering what everybody else listens to while running/biking .... thought I'd put out there the 9 albums I take with me on every run/bike. I have a 1GB Phillips MP3 player (w/windows media technology) and with all this there's still like over 750 MB of memory left. That's about 83 songs, but I could probably fit another 18 albums or more if anybody has any suggestions.

Trapped (self titled)
Flyleaf (self titled)
Rascal Flats (Me and My Gang)
Holly Brook (Like Blood, Like Honey)
Santana (Supernatural/Shaman)
U2 (Achtung Baby)
John Mayer (Room for squares)
John Mayer (Continuum)
Nickel Back (Can't remember name, but it has 'animals' on it)

What's involved in the challenge? Love/hate handles are the hardest to lose for me....
