Hi,

I'm back after a bit of an absence. went to Nelson (my home town) for a holiday, very little internet access there. It was a bit of a disaster really, tore the medieal meniscus in my left knee (not badly, it's coming right) and slacked of the training. Did my second Tri yesterday though and it Rocked! (I had to change from the run to the walk cause of the knee)

So I know i've put on some weight but I havn't looked at the scale yet, I'm going to weigh in again NEXT wednesday to give myself some time to kick myself in the at the gym and on the bike. In the mean time I have a LOT of reading to do to catch up on what's been happening the last two weeks

Congrats to everyone who's closer to their goals :-)

O.k. here's a question to the group --???--

I think I have weak ankles. If I take an extended break from running then start back up, they usually ache, and swell, and there is pain during walking about 20 min after. However, after say... a month of training on them (running) they get a little stronger and the aches and pains go away. I'm thinking this is due to the deconditioning of taking a break and the tendons and muscles assoc. with the ankle are traumatized from all the repeated force of pounding into the ground or treadmill or whatever. And it's this that makes me think that they are weak ankles because it can happen on any surface and that it seems only to get better with time on the track. I've also wondered about correct running technique, but I 1. run on different surfaces, 2. have proper footwear (socks & shoes) 3. I don't pound my feet with heavy steps 4. I'm slightly tilted forward for correct posture 5. and my stride is normal for my height and weight.
Right now there are two things that help the pain and swelling aside from anti inflammatories (IBU 800's) those are an ankle stabilizer, and warm hot baths (and yes sometimes I have to use Epsom's Salts) to soak the ankles. So what are some of the things, if any, that you guys could suggest to help? I've come to the realization that it's something I'm going to have to live with if I keep this lifestyle up, but if I could somehow shorten the down time that would be awesome.

Have you tried doing ankle strengthening exercises with an elastic band? (just type in ankle strengthening in image google search and you'll get some pictures of exercises)

Yes, sort of. If calf raises count. I mean they have to help, right? I think, and I apologize for leaving this out earlier, it also has a lot to do with me be able to crack my ankles too. Does anyone have arthritis or the beginnings of it in the hands? If you feel pressure in your joints like the need to crack them, and then you do, does it feel better? Well, I crack my ankles, and it's probably loosened the tendons and ligaments to the point that the pain is not only chronic but jsut something I'll have to live with untill I stop cracking them. Duh (me)! But yes in my training there are standing calf raises utilizing a resistance band technique. I also include squat calf raises, lunges, and yoga. All of which, in some way help to strengthen the use of the ankle.

You could always try strengthening the other side of your calf (i.e. the front side/shin) with an elastic band attached to a pole or something and you pull it back toward you with your foot (um, is that clear? lol)

For music when I run/bike I usually listen to techno because I feel it motivates me to go harder because of the fast beats. I'd have to check my iTunes to tell you what the songs are if you are interested because other than when working out I never listen to techno! If it's not techno then usually it's metal, but from what you've listed I don't think you're a big fan of metal...

And shin splints are a pain (I don't know the cause) in the muscle that directly overlies the shin bone.

Ok bad Monday morning for me- cold shower, my car died and I didn't achieve my March goal (69kg). To make things worse I actually put on weight compared to last Wednesday: 0.1kg. I remember the last time I was tryign to lose weight it took me a lot of time to pass the 70kg mark but I wasn't exercising then at all- very very disappointed.

My April goal is gonna be 69kg again. Also as my birthday and trip to Paris is at the end of the month my sub-goal is not to exceed March closing weight: 70.4kg

April thread- concerning my current mood I'd better not voice my ideas

OMG can this day get "any better"? If you read my earlier post you know it didn't start too well, now it turns out my order for bike stuff got lost in the post (order placed on 18/3). Also been waiting for a letter from my University for the last 3 weeks and still nothing. Despite all that I went to the gym determiend to do my workout (Paris is getting closer)- I got to the gym and it turned out I forgot money for the locker. I asked in the reception if I could borrow 1euro for the above purpose and your one said NO. I just came back home and I'm not going back there- not today anyway. It's a nice day (not raining) so I'm going for a walk- I know I'm pushing my luck.

Have you gone to the chiropractor for this? I've been having my chiro work on things such as my knee and ankles lately. It's not something I had ever done before I started training for a triathlon and every time he does an adjustment, it helps.

I think I'm speechless. I guess I get so frustrated from month to month when I don't meet my goal that I have lost sight of the fact that I've lost almost 12 lbs in the last 3 months. Last year, probably sometime around the summer, I was at 248 which is the most I had ever weighed in my life. I was ashamed. And now, I'm sitting here at 222.5 which means I've lost almost 26 lbs. And the difference now is that I feel like I've really changed my lifestyle forever.

I was watching last week's episode of Biggest Loser and the person that got kicked off said that the experience had changed his life forever. He had let his weight get in the way of living life. It's like he was actually speaking for me.

All of ya'll are awesome (that's right, I'm originally from Texas) but tons of thanks go to sailing for keeping up with all of our numbers and really keeping everyone going when we want to give up. If I ever make it Las Vegas, I'll have to meet up with you for a drink on me.

Preventing shin splits can be a motion picture, but I promise a quick snapshot.

Shinsplint is pain in the area of the tibia, normally anterior, and is the tearing of the muscle and/or tendons.

Prevention:

Proper shoes

Do not overstride

Don't land on heels

Do not increase distance or speedwork over 10% or quickly

If you flex your foot upward you will feel the muscle that normally hurts along the left side of the tibia.  STENGTHEN IT!!!

My biggest problem with eating is that I seldom get "hungry".   I eat anymore just because I have to, but I am thinking of having a bowl of cereal soon since I know I have a run scheduled.

Go for a run instead.  And, I'd rather work out outside than inside any day.  Especially - not raining!

Totally agreeing on this one.  Headphones on the bike on a road with cars = very bad idea.

Now, if you have a closed to traffic bike path/trail I can see it would be an option, but anywhere you have cars - no.

I know eh? once I got a job in a vet's office so I thought "alright, I'll have no problem sticking to my diet here!" (I used to work in a convenience store surrounded by pastries and candy... did not help my diet much!) but the bosses and the customers kept bringing in chocolate, cookies and all that!! (it was around christmas time too) Let's just say I did not lose weight that holiday season!

As long as you keep it to one cookie though, there really isn't much harm done, keep on track for the rest of the day and you'll be fine!

Here's a quote from another forum about this that I think makes a whole lot of sense: "If you drop one plate on the floor, do you throw them all away?" (something like that)
