So far:

4 cups of coffee

3 graham crackers.

I am on a roll and it is only 12:30, better cut back on my eating.

It depends:  Is it a set?  Who wants 7 matching coffee cups or a place setting for 3?

but hey at least there's no vegetables in there so your workouts shouldn't suffer from "all this food" right? lol

Excellent point my dear Steph.  Thank you for noticing.  I am trying to cut back on that "bad" food.

O.k. here's a question to the group --???--

I think I have weak ankles. If I take an extended break from running then start back up, they usually ache, and swell, and there is pain during walking about 20 min after. However, after say... a month of training on them (running) they get a little stronger and the aches and pains go away. I'm thinking this is due to the deconditioning of taking a break and the tendons and muscles assoc. with the ankle are traumatized from all the repeated force of pounding into the ground or treadmill or whatever. And it's this that makes me think that they are weak ankles because it can happen on any surface and that it seems only to get better with time on the track. I've also wondered about correct running technique, but I 1. run on different surfaces, 2. have proper footwear (socks & shoes) 3. I don't pound my feet with heavy steps 4. I'm slightly tilted forward for correct posture 5. and my stride is normal for my height and weight.
Right now there are two things that help the pain and swelling aside from anti inflammatories (IBU 800's) those are an ankle stabilizer, and warm hot baths (and yes sometimes I have to use Epsom's Salts) to soak the ankles. So what are some of the things, if any, that you guys could suggest to help? I've come to the realization that it's something I'm going to have to live with if I keep this lifestyle up, but if I could somehow shorten the down time that would be awesome.

Have you tried doing ankle strengthening exercises with an elastic band? (just type in ankle strengthening in image google search and you'll get some pictures of exercises)

Yes, sort of. If calf raises count. I mean they have to help, right? I think, and I apologize for leaving this out earlier, it also has a lot to do with me be able to crack my ankles too. Does anyone have arthritis or the beginnings of it in the hands? If you feel pressure in your joints like the need to crack them, and then you do, does it feel better? Well, I crack my ankles, and it's probably loosened the tendons and ligaments to the point that the pain is not only chronic but jsut something I'll have to live with untill I stop cracking them. Duh (me)! But yes in my training there are standing calf raises utilizing a resistance band technique. I also include squat calf raises, lunges, and yoga. All of which, in some way help to strengthen the use of the ankle.

Have you gone to the chiropractor for this? I've been having my chiro work on things such as my knee and ankles lately. It's not something I had ever done before I started training for a triathlon and every time he does an adjustment, it helps.

No, but I'll ask. I see her tomorrow. Thanx for the tip

Preventing shin splits can be a motion picture, but I promise a quick snapshot.

Shinsplint is pain in the area of the tibia, normally anterior, and is the tearing of the muscle and/or tendons.

Prevention:

Proper shoes

Do not overstride

Don't land on heels

Do not increase distance or speedwork over 10% or quickly

If you flex your foot upward you will feel the muscle that normally hurts along the left side of the tibia.  STENGTHEN IT!!!

OOhhhhhh! See I thought... it sounds sounds like a device to prevent the pain. I never realized it WAS the pain.

Josh-please tell me you do not ride your bike outside with your headphones on??????

No, as far as the bike is concerned, only when I'm in a gym setting, otherwise it gets confusing trying to filter out the ambient noises. And I always use hand signals too. Don't know if anybody else does, but I'm sure it looks wierd from a driver's POV where I have earrings and all. There're thinking, "What the hell is this guy doing, he looks to hard for that"

Alright, still sub 190 woo hoo! This is the longest streak I've had yet, don't want to jinx it though. 188.2. (I even had to sneak a Rice Krispy Treat, and a handful of pretzels just before bed at 4 am)

And as far as account. today:

1/2 cup Kellog's special k Protein Plus
1/2 cup Milk 2%

Snack:

Fruit cup (Jello)

and tons of water

dinner:

pot roast (kind of like a stew)
probably a coke

Later an orange and some more water.

So did I hit my goal saling (2 lbs)? I forget where I was at the beginning of March.

For music when I run/bike I usually listen to techno because I feel it motivates me to go harder because of the fast beats. I'd have to check my iTunes to tell you what the songs are if you are interested because other than when working out I never listen to techno! If it's not techno then usually it's metal, but from what you've listed I don't think you're a big fan of metal...

I like metal (heavy or not). It's the rap crap I can't stand.

food so far today:

2 NF Greek Yogurts, 1 cup blackberries, 1mini apple, 1 medium apple, 1 hard-boiled egg, 2 hard-boiled egg-whites....all sounds fine right?  Now I have to throw on a Choc. Chip cookie....ugg why do the people at my office feel the need to bring in evil food????

I know eh? once I got a job in a vet's office so I thought "alright, I'll have no problem sticking to my diet here!" (I used to work in a convenience store surrounded by pastries and candy... did not help my diet much!) but the bosses and the customers kept bringing in chocolate, cookies and all that!! (it was around christmas time too) Let's just say I did not lose weight that holiday season! As long as you keep it to one cookie though, there really isn't much harm done, keep on track for the rest of the day and you'll be fine! Here's a quote from another forum about this that I think makes a whole lot of sense: "If you drop one plate on the floor, do you throw them all away?" (something like that)

Interesting quote.  I'm not too bummed about the cookie.  Today I swam, I'm walking to/from the ferry for work and I have my hellish 90 minute cycling class tonight.  I'll burn off that cookie before it plants itself on my hips!

Glad to hear you leave the music at home when you are on the road.  Where I live we have tons of cyclists and I often see people with headphones and I want to scream at them!  Not even get me started on the people riding without helmets!  (I really hope we have no one on this thread going without a helmet?!)

No worries. I had a couple of CD books stolen a while back (yrs), and I'm just now getting to the point to start rebuilding them. I listen to a lot of alternative stuff, some metal, a few country artists, I also like the more conservative music played now a days, but I can't stand rap as much as I used too.
