Subject: Help me name my puppy as well

Didn't want to hijack the other thread, but we are also in the process of naming our soon-to-be new puppy, and we can't settle on a name.  She is a golden retriever, and we pick her up this Saturday.

I like Dakota as a name; my wife likes Sailor (which is the father's name, and I thought it was wierd to name a female puppy the same name as her father).

Any suggestions?

So cute! I remember when you posted her pic in the running thread ...

Many doggies are named Dakota. Haven't met one named Sailor yet! She will indeed love the water ...

AWww

Sailor is cute! Dakota is a very popular dog name too. But personally and if you want to go with the sailor...theme...ish, I'd say Scout is adorable. Ok, not with the theme at all, but I always thought it would make a perfect name for a dog, To Kill A Mocking Bird love.

Do we have to vote for Dakota or Sailor?  I always try to name my pets something that nobody else has named a dog.   When my current dog was a pup (13 years ago) nobody, except for those in Eastern bloc countries, was using the name Mischa.  She is still the only dog I have ever seen named that.

If you were going to go down that line - I think that dogs are supposed to have two syllable names so that they can tell the difference between a name and a command (which is supposed to be one syllable - someone correct me if I am wrong) I would go with Keila (it's Irish too - which is fitting for today).  I would pronounce that Key-La.

If I have to pick one of the others two - I think I would go with Sailor - but maybe spell it in a more feminine way - like Saylor or Sayler.

There is absolutely no requirement to stick with either Dakota or Sailor; in fact, I'd like different suggestions so we have some new ideas.  I like Keila too...that's cool.  I also thought Sawyer would be cool (I loved reading Tom Sawyer as a kid)

This thread is funny to me. I've never met a dog named Dakota, but I've known 2 named Mischa and one named Mishka.

I name dogs after Musicians. We have Barry White and Ralph Stanley (goes by Stanley). Maybe she's a Dolly?

She is just so cute   I like both names, but Sailor is cute and unusual.  Also, Dakota sounds like more of a boy name than a girl.  Kinda like my lab, when I got him he was named Bailey, which sounds girly to me, so I named him Moose instead.

"too dang cute"

I really want to name my next dog "Moxie Crimefighter" ... my current guy is "Albert" but he came with that from the shelter.
I was reading a people magazine late one night at work a few years ago, and the article was stupid celebrity names. Some doofus actually named his daughter Moxie Crimefighter. Bad name for a kid - excellent name for a dog!

Kona!! I love it!! 2 points for that one. I know tri-people will find that cheesy, but most people you run in to aren't "tri" people anyways.

That was no doofus, that was one of my heroes, Penn Jillette who named his daughter Moxie Crimefighter. His son is Zoltan.

If you're going to train your dog, her call name should be something short and easy to shout, i.e., Desdemona = bad, Desi = good. Dogs learn their names and commands, and they can tell the difference regardless of syllables, you just don't want to have to say something long and goofy when you're calling her to come. That's why sheep herders name their dogs things like "Jet" and "Rex". Not as much fun as Princess Waggington Wigglepuppy, but if you call your dog, those kinds of names get old quickly. Even show dogs have a call name that is vastly different from their registered name. Our old dog was Iffinest Guided Missle, but she was trained as Pearl.

Those are awesome! I dig both of them.

I named my first dog "Oscar" for Oscar de la Hoya (before the prostitute scandal) and my second dog "Lance" for.....do I really have to tell ya.....Lance Armstrong (of course).

BTW......she is a cutie-pie!
