Subject: Is a waterproof watch too much to ask for?

First I had a Timex and it leaked, then I had a Nike and it leaked.  Now I bought an UnderArmour brand watch (about last October) and after today's swim, it's got water in it.  What do I have to do to find a sports watch that can be waterproof for a whopping 1 meter?

I'm going on 3 years with my basic Timex Ironman and have never had a problem.  Do you press buttons when under water??

You have some bad luck with watches!  I have a Timex Ironman too and haven't had any problems with it.  You can just try one of the inexpensive ones they have at Walmart and Target for $10.   I had one of those and it was OK too but it had a fabric band and it got funky after a few months.

The Start button may be wet when pressed.  The stop button is probably pressed completely submerged.

I've never had problems with mine. Don't push buttons under water...that could be causing the problem. (You're not supposed to push the buttons when under water, but I've done it not too far from the surface without any issues.)

X2.  I have a IM watch that the start button quit working on (had to push real hard) but never saw any water.  I took it back and got a new one and now avoid pushing buttons under water.

I have had mine for about 6 months (timex) - press buttons under water - no problem.  I may avoid that now after reading the posts.....

My previous polar watches never had an issue either.....

It's not just you. I am on my 3rd in 18 months. I don't push the buttons underwater. I do push them when they are wet.

Sorry to hear this, but I've never seen a problem with a number of Casio watches, a Swatch, a Timex Ironman, and now my Polar 625X.

I have a Timex ironman watch and swim with it all the time, However Timex sales guy says not to push the buttons under water and I haven't.  Also, make sure when you change the battery, don't let just anyone do it; send it to timex, or if you do it make sure the o-ring is in good shape and in place.  Also, don't clean the o-ring as it has lube on it which is supposed to be there.

my timex IM is an original "indiglo" -- when did they come out?  ice age?  My 20 yr old timex marathon also still works...

I also got a Target cheapie, but thanks to inflation, it cost $14.99. It's a Timex women's sport watch. Yeah, I know, will always have girlie wrists. Men's watches never fit my wrists. But most importantly, it's waterproof so far, as long I don't press any buttons in the water.

Try getting one for super cheap at a place like Big Lots...$5 or $6 dollars. Not much of a loss if it drowns. And if it lasts, I'd go back and buy two or three more.

I've had my Ironman watch for over a year and I do a split on every lap [sometimes every 100] and have never had issues with it regarding water. I press mode, start/split, stop, spin the crown, all underwater, and it's still going strong. I think it's hit or miss.

I had two different cheap (and supposedly waterproof) Target watches die after ocean swims. I assume that's a saltwater issue. My wife bought us a pair of Mickey Mouse sports watches at the Disney company store and they--on the other hand--have worked great, saltwater or fresh. Now I'm afraid if she ever changes jobs, I'll never have another watch that will survive an OWS.

Never had any problems with any of my Timex Ironmans in the water

I think you have to get in the water in order to have a problem due to the water.

I use a timex ironman HRM. I hit the lap button under water while swimming and have no problems. This is my third timex ironman watch in my life. I think they are the best watches ever. Here is a little story:

I had a timex ironman in high school 1992-ish the band rusted from swimming. Late one summer the watch fell off my wrist. The next spring my grandfather was looking for spawning beds and found my watch. A new band and battery later the watch worked fine except for the alarm (i had the hourly chime and alarm on while it was under water. Fast forward to 1994. I had the same watch during basic training. It still worked, but I needed an alarm to wake up earlier than everyone else. I bought another Ironman watch. I think I've changed the battery once or twice since then. The only reason I'm not using it today, is because I wanted a HRM. Actually, someone I work with is using it to time runs.

So.... I don't think I'll buy anything but Timex.

With all this support of timex, maybe someone there should be made aware of all the good things we have to say...

My Timex IM got water in it as well. I was pushing buttons under water, but don't recall any warnings against that action. It seems hard to count laps using the watch if you have to raise both hands up out of the water to press the button.

I bought another Timex IM and am wearing right now, but only because all the other options looked worse or 5x expensive, with no guarentee of better performance.

Now that's funny, I think he meant while in the shower

Back to the OP, I've used Timex and now my latest is a 100 lap Nike with zero issues pressing buttons wet or underwater.

Well in that case I don't want to know about Spokes' monkey business in the shower!
