Instead of thinking about what could be, tell us what has been done that you only had as a long range goal/dream?  Can be as simple as completing your first tri still standing to qualifying for Kona.  Let's hear 'em!!

Me (all in the last 3 years):

Finished a marathon.

Ran a marathon (different than finishing one).

BQ'ed in a marathon (repeated again a year later on a different course).

Finished Boston.

Set running PR's in every single distance (even faster than when I ran way back in school).

Won a 5k.

Won or placed in my AG in numerous running and tri events.

Finished a HIM.

Did that same HIM the next year under 5 hours dropping over an hour off of my time.

Finished an IM.

Stayed married through the entire process .......

Finished LA marathon. Have done 3 others, and LA was not the first, but it was still a special goal for me.

Placed in my AG. It was a rinky-dink 5K and I got lucky because they were going 4-deep in the awards, but it was the first time I walked away with more than just a Finisher medal (not that there's anything wrong with that!). With all the talk lately about Athena/Clydes (I'm a Clyde) it was nice to actually place in the AG

Dreams change, of course, so looking back now some of these they seem a bit mundane. They were monumental at the time, though!

Ran a road race (10K in 48:50, back in 1995)

Ran the Charlottesville 10-Miler.

Ran a marathon.

Ran a marathon under 4 hours.

Did a 1/2-IM in my goal time (under 5:45).

Rode 100 miles (on a fully loaded touring bike, no less)

Have come back from knee surgery fitter and faster than I've ever been (not bad when you're pushing 50).

Two Beautiful Daughters in the last 5 years.

Getting faster at running beyond my dreams. BQ'ing wasn't even on the dream radar, and now it is.

Completed IM Wisconsin, and had fun doing it.

My first dream (with reguards to this sport) was to DO a triathlon.  I wanted to do triathlons for over 10 years, but was always occupied with other passions.  It was never a lofty goal because I knew it could be done.  But just signing up for the first race (a local Olympic length) and training for it was a goal for me.

I didn't realize it at the time, but when my first HIM came and went, it was kind of a benchmark goal, halfway to my IM - my ultimate goal.

Now that those things are done (except the IM), I have been refinining my objectives, by putting time goals and PR's on the list.

Good counter thread to my Goal thread Rick!
I actually find myself in the netherworld of goals and dreams right now, and I'm ok with that. What's funny is that I didn't realize they were "dream" kind of accomplishments until after the fact. Although I didn't put in the years of striving and reaching for them, I like to think I appreciate them just as much.

I have run a sun 3 hour marathon and qualified for Boston.
I have completed 2 Ironmans in under 10 hours and have been to Kona.
Finishing as high as I did at Kona with my Mom watching.
I have placed in the awards of AG in every triathlon I have ever entered except for Kona.
I have bungee jumped from the 2nd highest one in the world.
I have been to Australia and New Zealand.
I married well.

Not exactly lofty or even "dreamworthy", but after achieveing goal #1 of completing a marathon I set out to accomplish goal #2 of running one under four hours. Took three years and seven attempts (and training cycles) to do it. I've run another (even faster) sub-four since then...

 BQ is still a dream...

Well... unfortunately my tri goals have taken second place to my education and career in the last year, but

I passed the patent bar
Secured a very good patent law position after graduation
and in 1 month, I can say I actually graduated law school.

Triathlon-wise
Got into Alcatraz, albeit not by qualifying
had a PB of 34:33 for a 5mi.
...Other goals to be met by years end

All sports-related and not exactly dream-worthy, but:

Complete a sprint triathlon - August 07

Complete a sprint triathlon in a respectable time - October 07

Do a straight-up running race - December 07 (10K)

Run a 10-Miler, and with specific goal time - April 08

All of these goals built off of each other. I did the first tri, then decided to do another, signed up for the 10K cuz I wanted to test my running ability, then decided to do the 10-Miler as a pre-marathon test. So the goals aren't exactly lofty, but I did them

You said dreams and not goals so I think my list is really short. These two accomplishments were something that until I did them, I never would have guessed would be possible for me. (As a really crappy runner)

1). Qualify for the Boston Marathon
2). Complete an Ironman

Some would say that I suffer from a fundemental lack of imagination, but I would counter that barely 2 years ago, I could not run to save my life. What made all of this possible is my group of marathoner friends and mentors who showed me how to run, showed me what was/is possible. The most important lesson that I learned from them:

"A lack of natural ability is not an obstacle. Hard Work and Consistent Training can get you wherever you want to go"

Just a bit of thanks to the group who I owe it all to in the end. 13 of them are in Corral #2, 6 of them in Corral #1 and one of them is in the Elite Corral at Boston next weekend.

It's hard to say, as before 3 years ago, I wasn't a runner at all. In fact I really didn't like it. I'd jog 3 miles or so every so often, but really didn't 'get it'.

So since my evolution into a runner/triathlon, I'd say my two big accomplishments were running my first marathon, injured, in 4:00. It's where I learned what it actually means to push hard. The second was my first half marathon (coincidentally 6 months after the marathon), where I ran a relaxed race (with no external pacing) and pulled a 1:41 out of my arse. That was the race I really got hooked and realized that I might actually be capable of running times the rest of us considered to be "crazy fast" and that a BQ could be a real possibility.

then theres the whole married to a wonderful wife and have a kid on the way yadda yadda yadda

Dreams are individualistic. So while they might not be as fast as others, it doesnt make it any less a dream.

Im running Chicago and might try to BQ this year, I havent decided yet. However, i just kind of want to BQ, not to run B... just to qualify. The thought of knowing I could run B if I wanted is enough.

When I first started tri training: I couldn't run due to pf; when I did run, I struggled to break 10 min./miles and finish a 5k; I couldn't swim more than 50m; and I was scared silly a bit nervous about doing even a 'super sprint' distance tri.

These were all, at one time, dreams:
I did the super sprint tri and a sprint, and the next year a half marathon and a half IM.
The next year a marathon.
I recently averaged 7:40 min./mile for a 5km run.
I signed up for an IM. I haven't done it yet, but just signing up was a leap of faith.

Hey Bear, please check out the link to my friend's race report from Hudson-Mohawk Marathon last year. He is 58 years old and this was his 46th marathon and after a lot of hard work and dedication to training, he not only ran a BQ Time, but ran the best marathon of his life.

http://www.runningtimes.com/forum/showthread.php?p=103175#poststop

My only regret was that due to scheduling conflicts, I could not be there this year to run with him. Will have to wait for 2009 to thank him for all he has done for me.

Woohoo! PR by 12 minutes? I would only have to take 8 off my PR, once I hit 55, that is. Thinking my better chance is, as he thought, to hit 60 and run a sub 4.

If I can ever run again without pain, that is.

This time last year my dream was to do a 5K.  I never understood why people enjoyed running and I thought if I run in a race that would be pretty awesome.

I completed my first 5K in May and wound up winning 3rd in my age group.  I left right after because I never even considered I had the potential to WIN something at a running race.  That plastic trophy is still in our living room.. ha!

Then my dream was to place 2nd in my age group.  I've done that twice now and am REALLY hoping one day I'll have a first place finish.  I also wanted to run in a race longer than a 5K and I did a 5 miler in December.  Now I have a lot of crazy racing dreams and lots of work to do to accomplish them
