In light of recent cold water swimming stories, I had my first cold water swim the other day. The indoor pool I swim at was drained and the new water was chilly 65 degrees. Besides the sense of my skin being numb, I had a real hard time breathing. I know this is a common issue, but I was just wondering what the proper breathing technique is for cold water? I slowly exhale through the nose, but couldn't seem to do so in the cold water. I had to hold my breath and exhale and inhale through the mouth which threw my stroke off. I want to be prepared so I don't feel like I'm drowning come race season!

Thanks

I'm not really sure what to do because "catching your breath" in cold water is a reflex due to a quick raise in heart rate and blood pressure.  The only thing I can suggest try to slow your breathing.  You can also try getting acclimatized to jumping in cold water so the reflex is not as strong.  Also jumping in and swimming right away will help you warm up faster.  I hope this helps.
