Subject: Road ID: Going to keep me alive or kill me?
so I've been riding outside this year with no real safety problems until recently. After seeing an ad for Road ID and deciding I should get one to be on the safeside, it's been all downhill. About a week ago I placed the order on my way out the door to ride. 15 minutes in a bad driver nearly kills me. Fast forward a week to today: I check my email on my way out the door to ride (Road ID shipped). About ten minutes in to the ride a car is parked on a blind turn where it shouldn't be, i skid out trying to avoid it while hitting the corner. I've got some nice road rash up and down my ride leg now.

So my question is this, should I be afraid to put it on once it arrives? I'm beginning to feel like it's jinxed.

Dude, it's jinxed...

When you get it - bury it in the front yard face down and lite a candle. This should stop it.

I have bought two of them. I had to change it after being diagnosed with a clotting condition.

I don't ride without out. I will cancel a ride before I ride without it.

Um, if there'yre looking for ID, ID is the worst of your issues. Unless you have prohibitive (i mean completely unique) medical dealios, then i'd do without.

what ever happened to putting your drivers license in your back pocket, or in your little pouch under the seat?

If you are unconscious the ID will work for emergency staff admitting you to the hospital, but the police will still have a heck of a time finding relatives if your last name is common.

When it comes to ID's, skip the ankle and shoe and go for the wrist or neck, medics are far more likely to look in those two places for ID than any where else.

I'd hope they'd have the sense to hit the first speed dail number on my phone (wife), or send a patrol by my home. I don't like the fatalistic nature of carrying dog tags & I'm not giving my money to a company trying to cash in on fear.

I have the ICE entries on my phone and carry my drivers license but the thing is if you are hit anything in your pocket or on your bike can go flying (how far depends on how hard). That's why it's best to have something attached your person like a bracelet or shoe tag.

Heck, I lost both my cell and wallet along with other random items when I rolled my truck last winter. I guess the snow didn't help the search but you get my point.

Good luck with your phone cracked into pieces.

When I was hit I was lucky enough to have other stuff in my jersey pocket that protected my phone from being totally crunched. It's still not right to this day, but had that light battery not taken the brunt of my hit it would have been scrap.

There are cheaper options than Road ID, but some form of ID with a contact number on it is a good idea.

I got it just so they could contact people easily. I do use ICE numbers, but figure if the crash is bad enough to warrant the ER my phone might break.

My problem is that I think it's a homing beacon for bad drivers...

Ice entries on my phone, DL/Insurance card in jersey pocket, and a road ID.  I'm never without 2 of 3, having been hit and had stuff go all kinds of flying.

I use the Road ID and phone when I'm alone.  When I'm with others, its typically phone and DL or the RoadID.

The ID has my wife's name and number and both of my parents names and numbers along with my address, I think.  I guess I better check it.

I thought about putting my insurance on it too, but that changes from time to time.

My road id has my husband's name and home phone, my mom and her cell phone, and my name and High Clot Risk. I have factor V leiden, so I need to be given blood thinners if I am not bleeding profusely and will be bed ridden for anything longer than 12 hours.

It's not always easy for first responders, the hospitals, and the police to find contact information for relatives ... unless you're a bad-a** criminal or have had numerous contacts with the police, you are generally not in "the system" ... drivers licence information is different from province to province and state to state - and a lot of the public do not update their information when they move (illegal, but we won't go there) ... and as previously mentioned, ICE is a great idea but useless if the phone is broken.

I have been involved with calls where people lie in hospitals for hours while we scramble to figure out who their 'next of kin' is ... we know who they are - but short of putting out a media release it's sometimes impossible to get that critical contact ph# or address.

So just for that alone - I always take my Road ID with me ... you just never know.

I would rather not be John Doe #2857 at the trauma hospital.  I really think I could be missing a few days before people started to wonder what happened to me, then start calling hospitals in the area..  I really just want to make sure someone knows to go feed my dogs.

I'd like to make a suggestion regarding your cell phone. This comes directly from friends who are police officers.

Create a contact in your phone called ICE.

It stands for: In Case of Emergency.

Emergency personal will look for this in your phone and call it if you are unable to respond.

I have ICE1, and ICE 2 in my phone.

As a prior poster said.  Will do you no good if the phone gets all busted in the accident.  That said, I do that, the RoadID, and My DL + Medical info Card

even if you know your blood type, they have to do a full match anyway, so I wouldn't stress about it.

ICE is a good suggestion. I put ICE-wife, so emergency knows who they are calling.

For what is is worth, I have just upgraded to the RoadID online information site and as a firefighter/emt and a cyclist/runner I think it is a great idea, unfotunately unless you are a firefighter,EMT,Police, or Doctor/Nurse who rides a bike, cycles or is familiar with this system it may go undetected. I am making the first responders in my area familiar with this and telling them to look for it if and when they are dispatched to any traffic crash involing a runner or cyclist. I have told RoadID my concerns about the first responders not knowing about this and have asked them to create a program that can be distributed to fire/ems and police agencies but I have not heard back from them. So in the meantime I guess the best thing to do is for US in the cycling/running community to spread the word and let our local firefighters, cops and EMT's know how to help us when we can't speak for ourselves.

I find this hard to believe. where do they usually look for ID??    Kind of hard to miss a band on an ankle or wrist?   Don't they check you over completely at first?

It's not a matter of missing the band on the wrist, ankle or elsewhere on the body it is a matter of knowing what to do quickly and not having to say "what is this and how does it work" when you are trying to provide patient care. We do a head to toe survey and address any immediate life threatening injuries first, when a wrist band ID is found by first responders, we are used to it saying something to the effect of “diabetic” “high blood pressure” “epileptic” or other illness which can quickly be identified. We as first responders are rarely exposed to a wrist, ankle or other band type ID that requires us to 1st call a phone number or access a web site, then log in to the system and then access a pt medical records. If a first responder or health care provider is NOT familiar with the RoadID system and does not know how to quickly use the system it could delay care because important patient information could go undiscovered.

My point was that I would have liked to see RoadID provide some kind of awareness program for first responders and the health care providers so that they will know what to do instead of having to learn as they go while one of us is lying there unable to speak for ourselves. I have been a firefighter / EMT for over 20 years and I have only become aware of the RoadID system about a year ago when I purchased my first one. Like I said in my prior post, I am trying to make my co workers aware of this and I am spreading the word about RoadID, and if we all just told everyone from our friends and family to our health care providers and first responders in our home towns it my help save a fellow runner or cyclists life.

Regards,

Andrew

I wear a Medic Alert bracelet 24/7 due to medical issues (mechanical heart valve, Coumadin and penicillin allergy).  If I didn't have that stuff going on I still wouldn't leave the house without without wearing some type of ID on my body.

I usually ride by myself 99% of the time, but try to let someone know the general direction I'm headed, if not the exact route.  When I had my big crash a year ago my cell and wallet ended up about twenty feet away when I ripped the pockets off the back of my jersey - they could have been easily overlooked by an EMT trying to figure out who I was.

A memory that sticks in the back of my mind is the one time I rode without my cell and my flat kit: Naturally I had a flat 3-1/2 miles from home and ended up walking my bike home barefoot.
