Sunny
Total Time = 2h 19m 16s
Overall Rank = 248/251
Age Group = Athena XL
Age Group Rank = 4/4
Pre-race routine:

Well I didn't get much sleep at all (2 and a half hours) so my routine was just to be awake lol. I walked to the RPAC to put my stuff down, and walked back to my dorm to grab my bike (I couldn't get to the bottom floor in the elevator until 7 am). Then I biked back to RPAC. Yep, that was the routine. Oh, and I ate a PB&J sandwich :)
Event warmup:

Just walking and a short bike ride.
Swim
  • 14m 37s
  • 437 yards
  • 03m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was easy for me to continue; I did the whole thing freestyle. But occasionally I lost my breath and I would have to swim with my head out of the water from time to time. I lost count of how many people passed me, but I wasn't expecting to do well at all.
What would you do differently?:

Train more!
Transition 1
  • 03m 33s
Comments:

Dried off, put on pants, extra sports bra, shirt, then socks and shoes. Forgot to get water and a gel...so that set me back a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Get the water and a gel! I was thirsty as heck!
Bike
  • 1h 16m 39s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 9.73 mile/hr
Comments:

AHHHHHHHHHHH that was the worst part of the race in my opinion. I finished last and it was so embarrassing. I was followed by the police car the ENTIRE second lap. I could hear him on the megaphone every so often "Thanks guys, last biker. Wrap it up." I was passed by a good 50 people. It was uncool, and I couldn't bike fast because of that STUPID bike. It was so freakin huge, and I literally couldn't stand up on the pedals because I would lose control of the bike. So my butt was on it the wholeee time. Only one gear, back-pedal brakes. I cried for a good amount of time because it was so painful. =( Overall really disappointing since biking was (what I expected to be) my forte.
What would you do differently?:

Get a new (better) freaking bike!!!!!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

I wasn't strong enough to rack the bike in the first place (as I said, it was a huge bike! with fenders!) so I just put the kickstand up, took a few sips of water, and went on my merry way.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...otherwise everything was good.
Run
  • 42m 54s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 13m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

So I was the last runner too, by a good half an hour. But it's all good. On my way back all of the volunteers peaced out, and at the water station they left a few cups of water for me. It was depressing being the last runner, but it was much better than the bike. I half walked/half jogged it.
What would you do differently?:

Tried to run more instead of walk.
Post race
Warm down:

Went back to the dorm and slept for 7 hours.

Event comments:

Funny...I went into the Athena division, where there were only 4 people. Came in 4th. I beat out one other person, who was a 17 year old girl. The was the only one in the female 15-19 division. Thus, had I entered that division, I would've placed 1st. Ha, interesting how things work!

Way to go Chanelle,

You are a triathlete. You finished. I saw something today on the broadcast of the Olympic trials for triathlon. I think it was on a water bottle.

You never know until you tri.

I'll find out next weekend. Way to go. I'll take my computer with me next week and update.

Good job finishing.  If you stick with it, bike will get much much better.  It is normal to sit down the whole time (except for steep hills), but as training increases, you'll be used to sitting on the sadle longer.

When you can, find yourself an OK used bike.

I used to bike standing up all the time to gain speed and get moving a little more. Just what I've always done. It was very difficult for me to just bike with this monstrous thing and not be able to move more than my legs. My mom said she'd be willing to invest in a new bicycle if I plan on doing more races though

Nice job Chanelle! You did something that many others would not do. You picked yourself up and said I'm going to do a tri. As you have read and heard from others; many of our first tris were an experiment of some sorts. So, be proud. You are now a triathlete.

Yes, I would have to say I am hooked. The experience itself wasn't that great to be honest, but it's the feeling afterward of "holy crap I just did a TRIATHLON". Plus much praise from the parental units (don't come by that very often!).  Now, to understand my bike score, I was able to find a whole webpage of my speedmobile ...yes, I've been posting this on all of my threads, because biking was what I thought would be my pride and joy of the tri. And it turned out to be my worst time (not that any of em were good though =P)

Just you wait till next time! I'll have a reallllll bike that will scream "eat my dust!" Or so I hope, eh?

Pictures coming soon...gotta steal them from the amazing boyfriend that waited for me for a good hour to cross the finish line.

Great Job!! I guess you showed all of us who said not to dol it! Well done. You may have come in DFL but you beat all those who wanted to do the race and did not have the guts to sign up. Keep up the good work and training.

Great job out there and sticking with it! I know what you mean about being DFL and most of the race being packed up. At least they left water out for ya! My race where I finished DFL I was worried they were going to pick me up on an ATV and drag me off the course. But the important thing is finishing what you set out to do, which is exactly what you did!

Keep up the training! You'll look back on this race report and be able to see how far you came.

Chanelle:

You may have been last of the people who signed up, but you are first among those who didn't - kind of like what someone mentioned earlier.

Reading your report has actually inspired me to get off my rear and just get my bike fixed and to get in my sister's pool - even if it is too cold right now.  You should seriously think about submitting your experience as a first-timer's article.

Congratulations and I'll see at the Tri for the Cure.  I'll be the one you'll definitely have the opportunity to pass.

I really like that quote! I'll keep that in the back of my mind

Is the Tri for the Cure on June 28? I'm almost sure I'll be doing that one!

I am so proud of you and I apologize for not sticking around for a fellow Buckeye.  I promise if I know we are at the same race again I will personally come back out on the course and bring you home.  You should be DAMN proud of what you did.  It takes a lot more mental toughness to finish when you are last than it ever would being at the front of the pack.  Keep up the training and I look forward to seeing you and other BTers at another race.

Yes, it is on the 28th, the last Saturday in June.  I'm looking forward to this one as my first tri, as it's a shorter version of the sprint.  I just know I'll be dead last, but I'll be glad to get it done.
