Subject: Foam Rollers..Does Anyone Else Use Them?
So am I like the last person on Earth to find out about foam rollers??

Over the weekend, I was at the bookstore and learned about foam rollers and how they can do wonders for aching muscles. I had also read about rolling around on a tennis ball to really get the muscles good. At that point, all I had in the house was a raquetball so I decided to try it. I was rolling around on it and getting all my tight muscles to loosen up...well my boyfriend walks into the room and finds me on the ground, gleefully squirming about on the ground with my eyes closed (he obviously couldnt see the ball underneath me)..after I explained what I was doing..he stopped looking at me like I had lost my mind.

After I explained what I was doing, he took me on a voyage to buy the rollers because I figured my back could use a little massaging. WELL!!! little did I know I have KNOTS all over my back, I could feel them as I rolled around over the roller..and after I was done rolling around, my back felt WONDERFUL!!! I mean, I knew my back was tight but sheesh! I didnt realize that I was that tight!! And the tennis ball was even better than my raquetball.

My boyfriend used it to and he thinks its a good investement and he plans on using it too.

Why did I not know about this before??? Why???? How often can you use a foam roller anyway (I havent reached that part of the book yet)....

Heh!!!  Welcome to the roller world.  Although I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone be quite so enthusiastic about it before.     You might change your mind when you roll on sore muscles. lol    The roller is great, especially if you have tight IT bands.  I didn't check your logs but some of us who aren't runners start getting issues as our distances or intensities ramp up and the roller helps keep the muscles loose.  I try and roll about twice a week but have done it daily when I'm really in pain.

Have fun and stay loose.

I have had one for a good 6-7 months and use it daily.  You aren't the last to learn about them.  They have been around for a while but seem to be growing in popularity.

You can use a nalgene bottle also.

When I had IT Band issues a few months ago the roller was the key to getting me back to running again.

So painful, but so good for you (from what I hear).  I don't stretch or use the roller as often as I should, but it just hurts so much!  Last time I used it at the gym on my IT band, a string of f-bombs flew out of my mouth...in my outdoor voice.  I think I need to get one for home so I can swear in privacy.

It's supposed to hurt. If your IT band is really painful, just hold still with your hip on the roller for a bit, use your other foot (the leg you're not rolling) to take the weight off/on the roller (i.e., increase, decrease pressure). When you let that area loosen up, it'll be a lot easier to go down the rest of the ITB. When you reach a part that's extremely painful, hold it there until it loosens up.

Foam roller is great. If you want some real pain the tigger points quad roller does a better job but hurts alot more.

I love the foam roller. I have severe right hamstring and calf issues, and this helps keep me going! I also love The Stick...you can buy it at any running store or marathon expo!

I use mine a lot, both before and after training. In fact, mine is starting to compress, and soon I'll need a new one!

We have a large foam roller, and somehow, at every gathering, it gets pulled out and new people get introduced to the joy of rolling around on it.  Everyone is a bit apprehensive the first time the get on it, but after they magically crack those hard-to-reach spots on their back, they're sold!

I have to get Eric to roll my IT band.  It hurts too much for me to do that to myself.  I have to stick my face in a pillow and reassure him that he's not really hurting me.

I actually went to three places to find the one I bought. I bought mine at Dick's Sporting Goods. They had two sizes, one was 12 inches long with a 6" diameter, the other was um...36 inches with a 6" diameter. I dont know which length is teh best, I just bought the smaller less expensive one since I didnt know whether I would like it or not. so thats one placeyou can get it.

I am so glad to see I am not the only one who likes this thing...using it over the past two days has DRASTICALLY improved the tightness in my back :-)

Getting massages is probably the best thing endurance athletes can do for our bodies. The cause of many chronic injuries stem from adhesions or "knots" in our muscles. By loosening up these adhesions you can prevent many injuries. Unfortunately, regular massages are expensive so using a foam roller is the next best thing.

Although I've never used the shorter roller, I'd recommend buying the 36" one. It just seems more stable especially as your pain tolerance increases, you can put more body weight on the areas your working on.

I like the black ones as they last longer (don't get compressed)

mine is 6" round 3' long.

I use mine after every run and after most rides.

The smaller the diameter the more intense the massage/pain.

Can I just use a length of 4" PVC pipe or something for this? Or is that too hard of a material?

Too hard! Maybe if you wrapped it with something.
