Extreme Veteran 563 Pekin, IL | Subject: When to Start Nutrition(Infinit) on Training Ride? I have read that I should have 90 minutes of fuel saved up for the start of a training ride. I've also read that is when you should start taking in calories on a ride (training not race). Do you start at 90 minutes or earlier? I was thinking that 60 minutes sounded better. That way you don't use all of what you have up, before taking in more. I was planning on taking calories on any ride 2 hours or longer. What do you all think or do? Thanks, Chris Edited by CKinsey 2008-05-20 1:15 PM |

The Natti | Subject: RE: When to Start Nutrition(Infinit) on Training Ride? For training I start drinking early and never stop. I have the capacity for 3 bottles on my bike so that is good enough for 2-3 hours. I then just put some powder is a zip lock and throw it in my jersey. Normally you stop after a couple of hours to re-fill bottles anyway. So I just fill with water and add powder. That system get me thru a 5-6 hour ride with very few issues. A little tip for the run during a race. I make in heavy concentrate and then just squirt a little into a cup of ice water at the aid stations. Easy to get 1500-2000 calories into 4 fuel belt bottles. |

Subject: RE: When to Start Nutrition(Infinit) on Training Ride? Just my opinion, but I prefer to keep the tank "topped off" so to speak, than try to estimate when I will be "empty" and try to chase it. My experience is that once you are behind on calories, it's hard to catch up, and if you have a 5 hour ride planned, not eating for the first hour may put you in the hole. This is different than a race where I try to brnig my HR down a bit before nutrition so may wait 20 or so minutes while I drink water. I've never read that you should wait 90 minutes before taking on nutrition while training. I (try to) take in nutrition every 15 minutes (in my case concentrated Infinit for long rides (3+ hours) washed down with water Edited by ChrisM 2008-05-20 1:23 PM |

I use two 3 hour bottles for a 6 hour ride, don't have many rides longer than that. |

I once used a gel for a 3 hour workout, but that's about it. Running and biking I don't have alot of experience, but I would personally start taking in calories after an hour and a half on the bike. I've never gone over an hour and change running, so, it's never been an issue for me. |

At the very least, it's practice for racing. But, then again, on long ride days, everything is just like race day - up early, eat the same breakfast, etc. If i have a mid-week ride that's 1:30 or something, I'll just go by feel; I know what I need/don't need at that point. Edit: I don't start right away - first gel is at 25 mins. Edited by LaurenSU02 2008-05-20 1:46 PM |

Thanks, Chris On a training ride I start drinking right from the start. The length of the ride will determine how many calories is included. I don't do too many rides under 40 miles anymore (urban triathlete) so I just use a bottle of infinit per hour. Works well for me. |

I know you can, but the question is that if you took some type of quality calories would you recover better? If you run your body out of sugar you feel it the next day. It has as much to your next day and how you recover as if you can just finish a workout with nothing. Long term if you can recover faster, your next workout will be better and you will be come more fit in a shorter period of time. |

I start taking in calories 30 to 45 minutes into a intense workout or any workout that's going to last longer than 90 minutes. I'll take in between 200 and 300 calories and hour and get some type of recovery food or drink in my system shortly after finishing. However, there are also benefits to training your body to do more with less, it just depends on what your goals are. If you are doing half and full IM's there is no reason to hold back on nutrition. If you are looking to blaze a half marathon, then I can see training your body to do without. |

Extreme Veteran 563 Pekin, IL | Subject: RE: When to Start Nutrition(Infinit) on Training Ride? Thanks everyone. When do you stop taking in calories? Do you take in calories the last 1/2 hour of your ride if you are not running off the bike? I'm figuring 1 scoop of Infinit (150cal) every 1/2 hour, starting at the first 1/2 hour, for rides scheduled for 2 hours or longer. So a 2 hour ride, I'd take in 1 scoop from 30 min - 1 hour, another scoop from 1 hour - 1.5 hours, then do I need to take another scoop from 1.5 hours - 2 hours if I'm stopping at 2 hours? I will be taking in a post workout drink within 15-30 minutes of the end of the ride. I'm probably overthinking this a little, but want to get it right in training so I can get it right during the race. Thanks, Chris |

Scout7 - 2008-05-20 1:43 PM For running, I've found that I can do over 2 hours with nothing but water, with no real issues. I can't, anything over an hour, I have Gu20 or accelerade. I also like to have a little something with track workouts, but that's just me. For swimming, I need water for anything over an hour and 15 minutes, bike.... still have a lot to learn on the bike. I did my 18 mile last week with 1.5 servings ( 300 calories) of Infinit, and had only 1 gel (usually have 3) and that worked out great! |

Elite 2423 | Subject: RE: When to Start Nutrition(Infinit) on Training Ride? I do a regular mix. I start 8-15min into my ride, or when I first feel the need to drink and then drink every 8-10minutes or so. Probably drink a bit much. I want to try and start to drink double mixes. |

Expert 968 Wellington, North Island | Subject: RE: When to Start Nutrition(Infinit) on Training Ride? I also start hydration and nutrition right away and I take it in every 15'. For a shorter ride (2 hours or less) I can do with a couple gels and just water. For anything longer I try to take sips of Perpetuem or Sustained energy every 15' with some water and every hour I take in a little extra, like a gel or part of a pb & j sandwich. Overall ~300 calories an hour for long rides seems to be good for me. For a training ride that does not involve a run afterwards I'll take in nutrition right up until I clip out for the last time and try to get recovery food in me within 20' of getting off the bike. I haven't worked out my transition to running yet, but I've heard you should stop with anything but liquids 20'-30' before the run starts and keep even liquid calories down a bit so your stomach can process it all sufficiently. |
