I 'just' had the crazy idea of planning my first IM next year.

Now I have to choose an IM that both beautiful and suitable for

a doing an IM for the first time. Is Nice an IM that is good for my goal?!?

Or is there a better one to choose in Europe?

Best wishes

I had the same idea for my 1st IM,, I even considered Nice as well.. until I looked at the elevation chart.  I'm not a great biker and living where I do there are no hills to really train on..   what about Germany?

Well ,I wouldn't choose Germany because the largest part of the course takes place in the city. I'd rather prefer an IM where there is a bit more nature. (but I think I'll only enjoy it the first half of the race Cool!)

I also considered Switzerland...

ps: I do have some hills to train on.

IM Switzerland was awesome last year.  We had 17 people from our triclub go and for 10 of the people it was their first IM race ever.  All 17 of us finished.

IM Zurich or IM Frankfurt in Germany are the easiest in terms of bike elevation.

For Scenery, Zurich is the best, around the lake.

I live in Zurich and I am going for the 2009 one. This year I will do Cologne 226. I suggest you www.k226.com, it is a parallel IM circuit, cheaper but of course not for Hawaii...

By the way, the most difficult one in Europe, and maybe in the world, is Embrunman

http://www.embrunman.com/indexe.html

while one of the best scenery is on the Elba island, in Italy

www.elbaman.it

For Elbaman, I can get you some good discount if interested. I train usually with the president of the event...

I am doing Quelle Challenge Roth in Germany for my 1st this July.  Not only is the bike course thru nice rolling hills and farmland but the experience of 60,000 people out there cheering you on is supposed to be pretty incredible.

There are a LOT of Ironman races in Europe. But if you want it to be an official Dot-M race (possible Kona qualification) then you have to plan ahead a long time as they sell out within hours.

I will be doing the Cologne226 as my first IM this year. I choose this race mainly because it fitted in my schedule and it is FLAT

I had seen/heard that the majority of the European ones do not sell out that fast.  The Far East ones you can get into even later.

Nice and Lanzorate are supposedly the "hardest" offifial IM as far as course goes.  Norseman is the "hardest" iron distance race on the planet.

Quelle Roth is almost always rumored to be "short" in its measurements which is why so many pros break 8 hours there.

Norseman is the one you want, amazing scenery, point to point race which makes it a bit different, also almost completely self supported so no aid stations meaning you need your own support crew, only 200 entry limit each year to get yourself one of the most sought after race t-shirts you can get, black one if you go under the time limit, white if you don't, no medals or anything, just the knowledge that you have completed an IM distance race with 8000m of climbing!!!

Will be doing it as my first long distance on the 9th August

I am heading to Quelle Challenge Roth in Germany. I am doing the swim leg on a competitive relay (sub 9 hours) and then the bike leg for non-competitive relay (11 hours). A bunch of the folks from my tri club have done it before. They reported an incredible sceen - 250,000 people lined up and down the canle for the swim. And the crowds are all over the bike course. Think Tour de France mountain stages when there is barely 1meter to to pass thorough. I am looking forward to it.

Cheers.

I used to go to IM Roth in Germany every year to support my team mates.  I don't know if the course has changed, but it was a fast bike course and the marathon course was pancake flat.  I saw Lothar Leder be the first person under 8hours back then Cool

On another note, how about IM New Zealand???  Anyone? Hehe!

Best of luck in Nice.  You have a few hills to contend with. I'll be watching out for the results.

Will be in Roth this year too, Nice has just gone and was very hot, its a tough race due to the weather but the hills can be as brutal as Lanzarote without the wind.

Have done all the Euro races now so will be gonig to Wisconsin in Sept to start to compete over the pond but if you have any questions about Euro races give me a shout.

As for Embrunman v's Norseman, I have done Norseman and its tough, possibly 2 hours over a normal time but very dependant on the weather, the year I did it they moved the swim course down the fyord as it was only around 12 degs at the original swim area due to the snow run off from the hills. THe following year the water was more like 20 degs !

Not done Embrunman but reading reports its tough due to the heat and the climbing involved in the bike leg, plus by all accounts you do 180 km on the bike and THEN you are sent off to the Col d'Izoard for the last 7km so its over distance ! The run isn't flat either.

As for your original question Tzunami, if you wanted a beautiful race in Europe with M-dot status go for either Austria or Switzerland if its your first. Although tthe Nice bike course is ne of the most beautiful you will ever do, there are still issues with Nice, running out of water on the bike course is a defo no-no in my book and the run section is dangerous due to the proximity of slower riders coming in next to runners already on the course and the general public crossing roads that are not well manned. Plus as a first IM, its a tough one against the others.
