charleston - 2008-05-23 8:06 AM If memory serves...drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette

Yup same here, bar the cigarette.  It very likely ended up with a very bad hangover...

A year ago today I was probably enjoying several beers at the local bar after finishing $10 worth of Taco Bell and chain-smoking Marlboro Lights while discussing Bukowski.

Today I am enjoying a V8 Fusion after finishing a spinach, tuna, tomato and wheat bread cruton salad and looking at BT while discussing triathlons.

My oh my how things change...

I was working on learning to swim, still using microfins to work on improving my kick, and had just set a new PB for distance swam in a single workout (1600m). I was feeling confident about my running and looking forward to my first 1/2 century bike ride and my first 5k race.

Checked my blog from last year and I ran 1.5 hours and did my first ride with my women's bike race team for 1.5 working on paceline riding.

So nice 3 hour workout. No radical change in my training from last year to this other than training for an IM instead of a HIM.

I was a few days away from my first tri (a sprint 800m/13.5mi/5k). I hadn't ever done an OWS, and had done just about all of my bike training on an indoor spin machine. The swim was what worried me most, as just a couple months before that 25y straight was impossible. Today swimming 3000y, biking 40, or running 13 is not a big deal (though if i did them back-to-back-to-back I'm sure it would be!).

Well for me one year ago today....

I was recovering from gastric by pass surgery and I weighed 390 lbs down from 413 If you would have told me that I would be running Boise 70.3 in a year I would have bet my house against the Idea. I am now down a total of 150lbs and I WILL FINISH BOISE!!!!!

Holy crap. Fantastic. You guys, seriously. I love it.

A year ago today I was drinking way too much, having come to terms with my age putting me past football and not knowing what I could do next other than sit around and wait for age to slap me around. Watching too much TV and not getting any workouts in at all.

That what I was going to write !!! HOLY CRAP. That is unreal. GOOD-FOR-YOU !!!

Congrats

I was reading inspirational books about triathlon and had gone on my first (5 mile) bike on a mountain bike. Had not signed up for my first race yet or swum at all. Was a little freaked out about whether I could finish a sprint.

Now, a little freaked out about the HIM we plan to do in the fall and the marathon this winter (crossing fingers). : )

I was the husband of a very pregnant wife expecting our 4th child. I officially gave up on triathlon and "said" I would only be a cyclist.  Here we are a year later... I have a beautiful baby girl who is now crawling... and I am back full throttle pursuing my dream of being a triathlete.  I am 39... and want to do an Ironman at 40.

Sunday I'm running a 1/2 marathon that I ran last year also. It was my first ever road race of any kind and I finished in 2:14. I've been running (and riding and swimming) a ton since then and this will be my second 1/2 marathon. I should be able to finish in 1:45, and if I have a stellar day I think I can drop about 5-6 minutes off of that. So I'm shooting for a 30+ minute PR Sunday. Very excited.

My first tri was a super sprint that's coming up again in a few weeks. Trying to work out the schedule so I can do that again this year, I'd love to see what the difference is in that too.

Had just finished my first sprint last year, did the same one this year and managed to shave off 10 minutes. Now am training for my first OLY. Have completely switched mindsets. Went from " I just want to finish" to now " I want to kick arse". This time next year I hope to be training for my first 70.3 with more base miles in.

I had completed a My First Triathlon race without training and thought I had knocked one other thing off my bucket list.  Fast forward to June 6th, Dad dies of heart attack and I instantly become focused on not following him and begin to actually train for another.  I did 2 more last year (sprint and Oly) as a MOP/BOPer, done 2 this year (sprint/HIM) as a FOP/MOP.  I am pretty happy with my progress and hope the rate of progress continues into next year.

One year ago today, I had been going to spin classes twice a week, but had not even signed up for my first tri. Then in June I signed up for a training group at a LRS for a September sprint distance tri. I could not swim one length of the pool without gasping for air. I dusted off my old steel 10 speed from high school for the bike rides. Luckily, I did have a running background but hadn't run much the past few years.

The tri went great and over the winter, I kept swimming, bought a bike and started riding, kept running and found BT somewhere in there. Lost about 8 lbs. and have a much healthier diet now. I am eating MUCH more than I used to eat, but much better. Still going to spin classes twice a week, but I am amazed at how much additional training I can do, when I used to think I never had enough time! Trained hard for and completed my first Olympic last Sunday! It's been a truly terrific year.

Good job on how far everyone has come! I love looking back too
A year ago, I was not yet a triathlon finisher. Now I have finished four. A year ago, I was just signing up with the recreational swim team that I used to be a part of in the summer. I wan't even working out yet. I am now on a more competitive year-round swim team.
A year ago, I thought swimming a mile was hard work. Now I can easily swim 5,000 yards. I used to swim a 50 meter sprint in 38 seconds. Now I can do it in 35.
I also used to barely be able to run a mile. Now I can run 8 without stopping. I also used to not even know how to work the gears on my too-small bike. Now I have a good fitting bike (not a fancy one, still a mountain bike you can find at wal-mart) and can ride (slowly) up to 3 hours.
However, one year ago I knew about triathlons, found a race that looked intresting, and though I wouldn't start working out and training untill June, I was woundering "what if..."
