I'm doing my first Oly in Philly this weekend, and I'm starting to go into panic mode. My only goal for the race is to FINISH, maybe even with a smile on my face! I've followed a training program with TnT, and managed to raise $3200 along the way. I'm SLOW, in all 3 legs, I'm slow. I guess I'm just concerned I'll come in last. I know, it's better than those sitting home on the couch. I just need to calm the nerves down.

Assuming you've put in the necessary training you'll be fine. I think it's good to have nerves as it shows you care. As far as where you finish so what. Do the best you can and you've won. Just remember (unlike myself) to smile at the finishers shoot for a good picture.

If your goal is to finish, then it shouldn't matter if you're last or not. If you've followed your training plan, you'll do fine.  Great job on signing up and raising all that money. Finishing will just be icing on the cake!  Good luck!

You'll get the most cheers if you're in the back of the pack.  Take it easy today and tomorrow.  Don't think about the whole race, just break it down into parts, when you finish one part you get to graduate to the next part.  Before you know it, you're at the finish line!

Swim, T1, Bike, T2, Run --- FINISH LINE!

I have my first Tri this weekend as well, an Oly too.  I am nervous, but as other posters have said, if you put in the training, you will finish and be proud of your accomplishment.  I am like you, just wanting to finish.  I am wanting to enjoy the day and have fun.

I am doing Philly as my 1st OLY this Sunday too. I am terrified as well. But, like you my goal is to finish. So, as long as I cross that finish line I will be happy. I do have a rough time goal in mind but I am not too stuck on that.

GOOD LUCK Sunday!!!

I'm just hoping that the rain holds off until after the weekend. I am NOT looking forward to making my first Oly into my first Du. Ugh.

I'm not a great swimmer, but I'm an even worse runner so that's the LAST thing I want to have happen!

I am also doing the philly race. It is my first Oly distance and I am also getting nervous about. but if you really think, there is nothing to be nervous about it. bomb the race, cause when you do the distance again you will see improvement and that is what I am doing. going to try my best so when I finish and do another Oly distance I will do better.

Tell yourself that its just another training day and to just have fun with it. Try not let yourself play with numbers or keep up with other racers.

GOOD LUCK!

Dan -
Thanks for that!!! I hope to get in one last swim tonight at the pool with my wetsuit. I'm still trying to get used to it.

You should try to get to the Open Water Swim tonight in Wenonah.  That would be much better than the pool for you.  Let me know if you need details.

I'd love to get there, but I REALLY have to get the boys to karate tonight. They haven't been there all week.

I understand that.

Kim will be bringing our kids tonight.  It is so nice now that the girls are Green Belts and Liam is a Red belt (they all go to the same class now).

I'll have a while until that happens since Cooper is a red belt and Hunter is in the Super Ninjas! Maybe one of these days, I'll actually start training there again.

Finishing is the main goal.  I was at a race a couple of weeks ago and you wouldn't believe the cheers that erupted when the last biker came into transition.  I get the chills thinking about it now.  Very cool.  Everyone is sooooo super supportive.  Don't let place get you down.  Good luck!

You will be ok.  Nothing we can say will calm you down, you'll be a bag of nerves until the gun goes off, then you'll be so relaxed and focused.  You have done great at your training, let all the hard work payoff and cross that line.

I'll see you on the race course...

No matter how many tri's you do, you'll always get into an "excited state" prior to your race. Try learning to use this excitment and energy to pump yourself up and visualize yourself kicking the crap out of the race! Everytime you feel nervous, picture yourself sliding through the water, powering through the bike and floating on the run!

Don't let the energy own you, own it!

Hey Carol, I checked the results and looks like you accomplished your goal of finishing and also not coming in last.

Great job, so did you finish with a smile?

Thanks Dan.
Yes I met the goal of finishing and really at that point didn't care if I was last at all. It wasn't a good day for me out there. My swim was slower than I expected. I think I zig-zag'd quite a bit. The bike - well let's just say the hills bit me in the butt! I was OK the first lap, but my stomach started revolting in lap 2 and when I tried to press to get up the hill, I thought I was going to throwup, so I wussed out and walked the remaining hills which of course REALLY killed my time, which wasn't speedy to start with. One mile into the run I started getting sharp pains in both my knees, which I never get. My run turned into a power-walk, as the temperature kept rising. BUT I FINISHED and that was the goal for the day! Got to run across the finish line with my 3 kids, which was fun.
I'm not sure if I'll do this distance again anytime soon, at least not until I lose a dramatic amount of weight. But at least now, I can say I accomplished my goal and raised $3300 for the Leukemia Society along the way!

Do you have any races coming up? I debating doing the 2 women's events (SPRINTS!) in Philly in July and August.
