By a show of hands, who's doing NYC?
This is my 1st Tri...3 weeks away and it's on my mind at least 95% of the day.
I have read many of the race reports many times...I feel as if I've done this several times : ).
The butterflies have not yet arrived but I can feel their arrival.

Overall, this site has been an amazing source of knowledge. I have picked up several little things that will make my experience a better one.
I keep scanning the forums and lurking...waiting for a magic post that will give me just a bit more info on this particular Tri. I'll go hit the pavement and check back later.

I'm in!

I'm not worried about my fitness, just some nagging injuries that don't seem to want to go away. (Ok, maybe I'm a little worried about my fitness, but that's only b/c the injuries make it hard to train as much as I'd like)

Race reports are your best bet. I'd still like an NYC veteran to give me a overview of the bike course. I know it's got hills, but where are they, and how long are they?

Map of the course:

http://www.nyctri.com/Assets/Course+Map+$!2706.pdf

Doesn't have elevation, but you could probably find it at mapmyrun.com or the like (not sure if MMR has elevation profile). Wait - doesn't the BT route tracker have elevation? Try there!

I'm in!  I am new to this site and have also been looking through the race reports.  They are really helpful.  Going to do the computrainer ride of the course at Cadence this Sunday.  Will be my second tri, first was Harryman in May--looking for a major improvement as I freaked out in the ows.  Thank goodness for the current of the Hudson!

I'm in, as well.

I haven't looked through the race reports, but I'm going to get on that. It'll be a good idea of what to expect come race day. I did record the TV coverage of the race, which was more focused on a few individual stories, minor celebrities, and the pros. Not much about the course, but it does get me psyched if I watch it on the trainer.

I did the Cadence computrainer ride 2 weeks ago...not a scary course at all, at least not indoors with the AC pumping : )).
I timed 1:26:10 (25.3 miles) - I lost a few minutes when my chain popped off...I'll write it off as a "maintenance exercise".
Is the coverage from last year or upcoming for this year?

I'm in. It's my first oly and only my second tri. I live right on the Hudson and was looking at the water last night and that current is unbelievable. Thank god for that, otherwise I wouldn't be able to swim a mile. One of my coaches said the bike course is a little hilly, but mostly just long gradual climbs, nothing steep. A friend has done it twice and she said her legs were shot for the run so I need to be careful on the bike. I can't wait, it's all I think about all day as well.

Yeah, pretty much just long and shallow climbs. If I remember right it's worse on the outbound section than the inbound.

There is, however, a very steep (but very short - like 100ft long) climb IMMEDIATELY out of transition. You have to get from the river level to the street level. It's kinda straight up. Definitely have your bike in a high gear to start out.

Also - the Henry Hudson has lots of bridge connectors that love to cause your bottles to rocket out of behind-the-seat holders. Clamp 'em down tight.

Me too!

The Henry Hudson does have a decent gradual uphill climb towards the GW bridge.  If I remember correctly, the NYCTri website is supposed to have a video clip of the bike course but I was never able to get it to work.

This will be my first Tri EVER.  I'm not worried about the run b/c the Central Park course is hilly but FUN.  (During the cooler months, I run this loop during my lunchbreak as a nice 6 mile run)

FWIW - I did hear from a buddy that last year a Cheetoh bag floating down the river made it in 32 minutes - so I'm just hoping to be a Cheetoh bag on the swim.

In fact, just bought my wetsuit today - now just need to get down to JackRabbit to get some new running shoes...

Rumor has it that the Cheetos only took 22 minutes and the guy that floated on his back without a single stroke did it in around 30! I'm with you in hoping for a good current. If I can hit somewhere in the vicinity of the Cheetos or the floater, I'll be happy!

I heard that bag of Cheetos caught up to the pros...they fought for position for a while and the Cheetos got a cramp and came in second. The bag of Cheetos then DNF'd at T1. Someone later in the day overheard the obviously upset bag of Cheetos mumbling something about poor nutrition!?! (Insert drumroll and crashing cymbal here.)

Yeah, the swimtime of that bag of cheetos changes by the day...however we must keep it a secret. You know that look that people give you when you tell them that you must swim almost a mile in the Hudson...telling them a bag of cheetos can do will ruin it all!

So, if I grabbed the Cheetos, rolled over on my back, and proceeded to eat them, would I be faster than just floating? I love me some cheetos. They would be the perfect rabbit for me to chase. I gotta get me some cheetos.

I've never done the race, but I volunteered last year. Here's my sole piece of advice: There are no aid stations between T2 and the beginning of Mile 2 on the run, and the run across 72nd st to the park is unshaded and hot. I'm going to bring a small squirt-top bottle of water just to get me through that first stretch if I need it.

I'm racing NYC. Very excited to "compete" at a big city venue. So cool to have the streets to yourself in these settings.

No fried ersatz cheese products will beat me on the swim. Gare-UN-teed!

After that all bets are off. I'm racing the Newfoundland 70.3 the following weekend, so I'm approaching NYC like a training day.

If you love cheetos they should make you faster no matter what. Make sure you bring your own, because if you just pick up a stray bag that's floating in the river you could get DQ'ed for accepting outside aid

I'm in as well!  This is my first tri so I'm just aiming to finish in one piece.  I've never swam in a wetsuit before and was planning on doing the swim in my tri suit.  I know about the benefits of a wetsuit, but do you think I will be ok without one?  Thanks.

NYC was a fun race last year... The cheetos did a great job on the swim. The current is pretty nice, especially when you do a nice easy stroke and you get out around 16 mins. It's amazing watching the seawall fly by.

The bike can be a little rough as stated earlier with the bridge joints. The toughest part of the bike course is probably near the turnaround. I would say, other than the very beginning, it is the steepest hill you ride.

Expect the run to be more hilly than you think if you've never been to central park. The back stretch can be brutal, especially if you start later in the morning and the sun is out.

Final words... Be ready to have to wait a couple hours to start the race... pack some nutritional goodies and liquids. I think I had to wait over 3 hours to start last year from the first wave.

Expect to run for a while to transition. Some people took almost as long to get to and out of transition than most pros did the swim. There's 2 transition areas that are set up, and the yellow transition got the short end of the stick, as they had to go a good couple hundred meters to get to T1.

Don't be afraid to walk up the hill to street level at the start of the run. It can ruin your day if you want to power through it.

Enjoy the fact that you're out riding on the HH Pkwy and running across Broadway and through Central Park. It's kind of cool, especially if you're not from the NYC area. My profile pic is from the race last year as I just crossed Broadway.

Nice photo. I volunteered last year, and your photo is right by where I was stationed. It was an amazing sight seeing all those runners coming down 72nd.
