Although it has been said several times, I would like to reinforce the point that you need to think about this for a long time - I would say at least a year. If you have no idea that immediately jumps out at you, don't just get something on a whim. I got my tattoo after about five years of thought (it's the lion rampant) and have not regretted it once. The only second thought I had was the instant that the artist started it (not really a second thought, more along the lines of well it's too late to turn back now).

Additionally, make sure that you research the artist, look at other work and if possible, watch them work. Take note of the practices, beyond handling needles and ink (which is crucial) make sure that you look at the overall cleanliness of the operation, washroom facilities, etc.

Finally, make sure you know where you want the tattoo. I know several people who have gotten them in places they cannot see and have been disappointed that they rarely even see their ink.

Shane

BTW - Many people get addicted to it so watch out...

I agree with Pirate Girl.  Definately wait a while until you decide.

When I graduated from Airborne School in 1990 a bunch of guys went into town (Columbus, GA) to get their jump wings tattoo.  I ended up not getting one....

MAN AM I GLAD!

Getting a tattoo because I graduated from some silly 21 day military school?  Please....lamo excuse in my book to forever mark the occaision.

An mdot tattoo (signifying finishing the race), on the other hand is a little more work to achieve...but then again, I'm not getting 26.2 tattooed on my body either.

I definately don't know what I'll do, but whatever it is, I'm gonna definately wait until the emotion passes over before I get anything done on my bod.

i don;t gave one, but always thought that if I did get one, it woudl be small, and from the "edge of teh world" on the old maps that displayed sea creature and monsters amid sailing vessels. I'm not sure if I"d get the sea creature or the sailing boat, but it's the only tatoo idea I've had for the past 15 years.

Now that I have a nice permanant scar on my back, it may be a good excuse to finally get it.

I have no tattoos, but know lots of people with them some with lots of regrets and some with none. I would say that Autum gave you some excellent advice for tattoo selection. That being said a friend of mine had one done years ago when he was going through some tough times in his marriage. He came home with the USDA prime choice meat stamp on backside. She immediately threw him out.

I'm pretty old school about body "art", and my over-riding philosophies are:  1.  God put me on this earth fat, bald, and wrinkled and that's the way I'm leaving - no other adornments, and 2. you can only get one if you have been in the military and were drunk enough to have no recollection of how you got the tattoo.

That's nice, pg. How long did that take, if you don't mind me asking. I've thought about getting a tat, but at my age it would be kind of pathetic.

Thanks. Total time was about 17 hrs, but each session was only about 2-3 hrs and it was spread over 3 months.

If I ever finished an IM, I probably would get a tattoo. I've already started thinking about placement and design. But it wouldn't be the plain M dot. I'd put more decoration into it to make a bit more artistic.

Thanks Christian for asking this question, and thank you every one for your responses.

I have no desire to have a tattoo, but last weekend, my sixteen year old asked to get a tattoo. I said that he would have to wait until he was "older", employed and independent. It felt like an inadequate answer, it lacked all the important things that came out in this thread. I am printing this out and sharing it with him.

Thank you thank you thank you. What would I do without BT. You all make me a better triathlete and parent!

Zaga-

I had the idea for my first (the one on my back, you can see it in the "I got a new bike!" thread) since I was about 15, but I didn't get it until I was almost 19. Tell him it's worth the wait. Though I stuck with the original idea all that time and went through with it, I'm glad I had such confidence when I finally got it done. I still adore it over 5 years later (in fact, I'm going to adorn it more very soon)!

He wants the words "Angel with a dirty face"...it's the name of a song. At first I thought he wanted the image. I could not figure out "why" an angel, and "how" a dirty face. We had a real breakdown in communication...I didn't need to feel more like a fuddy duddy at such an important moment!

I have two tats, and love them both and they both have significant and personal meaning to me. I waited many years before I got the first and thought long and hard about it. I have no regrets, but it is a significant investment to have art done. Its not cheap, it hurts, and (obviously) will be with your forever. My advice is, if you think you want a tattoo, come up with the design you want and then put it away for several months, even a year. If you look at it again after time has passed and you still love the design and it still means something to you then go for it!

Can you even get a tatoo, legally, before you're 18 anywhere in the US? I have 2, one done when I was just shy of 18 and one when I was 19, and I have plans for at least one more (I'm 29), possibly 2. Clearly, I don't regret it. All I can do is echo the pick-a-design-and-wait advice...I've been waiting for 10 years (lots of reasons for that) to get my next one, the desire for it has not slacked at all.

I've heard that laser removal hurts a lot worse than the tattoo (which hurts pretty badly). Just something to keep in mind when deciding whether to get it done, for those who aren't sure. I'd say, if you're not sure and aren't willing to wait a year considering your design, do not get it done.

I also think it's very cool that your son trusts you enough to ask you about a tattoo. I've been out of the house since I was 16 and my parents still don't know about mine. :P

The younger the age the longer one should wait on getting the design inked. I wanted one since 16, but what I wanted back then was nothing what I ended up with. I'm really glad that I waited. Looking back, it would've been hard to do the design I have now if I would've gotten what I wanted back then. I didn't get inked until 21.

Also, many places won't tattoo anyone under the age of 18, even if they have the consent of a parent. The place I went to had a sign posted "No tattoos for persons under age 18". Teenagers came in with their parents and the parents said they had consent, but the place still wouldn't do it. Artists there also had the power to refuse to tattoo certain parts of the body, and certain things that weren't really "artwork."

I got mine done on my upper arm now, even though my Ironman is this summer. Mostly for the motivation, but also because it's easiest to get them done in the winter so they can survive the exposure later on to the summer sun without the colors fading. It takes a good 6 months for them to "cure", if that's the correct term. Here's a pic of the IM tattoo, along with the mermaid that I had done a while back. I have 2 others on my opposite arm.

Max,
That's a great tattoo, but what if you were injured in training and could never compete in an IM event? I would hate to have that tattoo as a reminder of an accomplishment that I could not complete.
I think that is a great motivator, but I think I will stick to my IM sunvisor until I finish. :)

Also, I wouldn't want to keep answering the question of "Are you an IM or which IM did you do?" and I would have to say. I'm doing an IM later in the year...but that's just me :)

I know Tom, I thought about it, but there is no way I'm not going to do the IM, and I figured what the heck, stick my neck (er, arm...) out there and have it done now. I guess if others can wear the M-dot on the Ironman watch, then I got my reasons too! At least I have it for when I cross the finish line! This philosophy isn't for everyone...your mileage may vary.

I pulled a classic "Phoebe" (from Friends!) when my friend and I were on vacation in Miami... it rained the whole time we were there... and we had to find activities to keep us busy... Movies, malls, psychics...We wound up at a tattoo place... She wanted to get a shamrock near the bikini line... and I thought I'd just pick something out while she went... I couldn't find anything I wanted permanently affixed to my body, so, after she went... I said... "you know, I'm not so sure about this..." and I passed. Boy was she PISSED!!!!

Now, I am 200% sure the ONLY thing I would EVER tattoo on myself is the M dot logo... and only AFTER finishing an IM. I'm not sure about placement, but I'm thinking it'd be on my right lower leg... ankle area... or maybe even above the arch of my foot ((YYYEEEEEOOOOUUUUCCCCHHHHH)) small... something to permanently commemorate one HELL of an accomplishment...

My husband has a huge Road Runner tattooed to the inside of his left arm... Looks a bit odd, since he's neither a runner nor a bird enthusiast... ?

Oh I hear ya. And I didn't mean any disrespect. I think of this stuff when I am out on my runs or whenever I get a pain in my knee or whatever. I think about all the IM logo gear I bought that I won't wear until I'm finished and how disappointed I would be if I didn't finish or couldn't compete. I would be 10 times more bummed if I had a Tattoo.

LOL...none taken Tom! I look at it as super motivation or a pep talk to myself...as in "Look you dummy, you went and got the ink, now don't go killing yourself and make sure you finish the damn event!" My kids might be the first to admit their old man is a coupla french fries short of a complete Happy Meal

LOL. We have 2 sets of hotel reservations in Tempe, one in a nice hotel that is far from the race and the other is closer and cheaper, but not as nice. I was asking my wife which hotel she wanted to stay at and she said" Well we can stay at the nicer hotel because they have massage therapists there. And this way you can get a massage after you get out of the hosipital "

Madeye, I am glad you brought up the age issue....now I can relax a bit....I won't worry so much if I hear "Hey mom, look what I got".

And he's a thoughtful kid, he doesn't do too much impulsive unless it involves being on top of a snowboard or a skateboard, all the advice shared here I guarantee he will appreciate.
