I calculate percentage done on my runs at different points for long runs or track workouts. Long division while running takes your mind off of what your doing.

Also, since I am chatty, if my running partners won't talk, I sing to myself with the same stuff on my Ipod. I have changed it only twice over the past couple years. (I think they may be sick of ABBA...) On turn arounds on runs I have to physically touch the barrier---and I always pretend that I am breaking the tape when completing a run. Wow. I am a dork.

I do that too!  Gets tough toward the end of runs when my brain is getting fuzzy, but by then I don't care.  I passed someone on the run of my last HIM and told her happily "we're 5/6 of the way done with this race!" (I could only handle fractions by that point) --  she didn't seem as encouraged by that as I was

When on a long run, I always touch a sign/signpost/other marker for good luck at any turnaround.

And then I launch LOUDLY into "Total Eclipse of the Heart" (the song that begins, Turn around ...)

You'll LOVE this then...........

If my knees are bothering me i run down hill backwards, have caught quite a few neighbors laughing at me. Usually sing out loud while running too to make sure I keep the right pace. Soo seeing a guy wearing swimming trunks and no shoes /maybe no shirt running backwards singing styx or journey might be pretty funny.
