Time to admit some of the weird and strange things you do in your duathlon/triathlon training.

Since breathing while swimming was a major issue for me, I used to often 'practice' bilateral breathing while biking and running; turn head to right, inhale, head to front, breathout-2-3, turn head to left, inhale, head to front, breathout-2-3, etc.

I'm sure I looked like a dork doing this, but if I was concerned how I looked I'd never leave the house.

Did it work?

Some might say that training for three endurance sports simultaneously is a weird and strange thing.

Counting laps during a long swim has always been an issue for me.  So I started counting by thinking about where I was/what I was doing when I was 1-year-old, 2-years-old, 3-years-old, etc.  Not that my life has been all that fascinating, but it's kinda fun to think back to all the places I've been, people I've known, etc. Kinda weird, huh?

I also have a tendency to sing to myself on the bike....just whatever song is in my head at the time.  Usually, it's the ma-na ma-na song from the Muppets.

x2
Or the distances in the races we do. What other sport calls a 2 and 1/2 hour event (for slow me...) a sprint?

Air drumming while running. Singing...while biking and running. Mooing to cows while biking. And for race day - like to shave my legs using Neet vs. a razor.

Yeah, I definately sing aloud on the bike.   When I ride by cows, I yell "HEEEEEY COWWWWWWWWW!"

I definately fall into the quirky and eccentric category.

I see a lot of cows and horses when I ride and I always whistle at them like I whistle at my dogs.

Thank goodness singing and talking to yourself are completely normal. Wait a minute, talking to yourself is normal, isn't it? My chatter usually consists of telling myself to HTFU and during races, I have a running commentary going about people's techniques (which are always better than mine) and what they are wearing.

I sing alot on the bike too, but I do it when I ski as well, so it's not just a tri eccentricity.

I also talk to cows. It comes from all those years I spent working with dairy cattle. Every time I pass them I call out, 'Heeeeeellloooo Laaaaaaayyyyyydeeeeees!' Also sometimes accompanied by a short and staccato MOO!

In fact I usually talk to all the animals I see. If it's a dog or a deer, I usually say 'now you just stay right there'

Running and Riding:

Quacking at the ducks, mooing at the cows. Talking to all the animals. It's normal. I sing to myself as well.

Swimming, I haven't really found my eccentricity yet, I know it's there I just need to let it out.

And here I always thought I was the only one who mooed at cows. The strange look they always give me, made me think it was something new for them.

I always carry three water bottles when I am biking. It does not matter if I am going 10 miles or 100, there are always three. I am not sure why, and I don't know when it started, but it is one of my superstitions.

I won't use Speed Laces or any derivative because I tuck the remaining laces into the lace up sections down below. I do it now for any tying pair of shoes.

Oh yeah I sing on the bike! I've also been known to rap

For swimming to remember laps, I chant the yardage I'm on... every single stroke. So in my head I'm swimming and saying "25, 25, 25, 25, 25, 25, ... turn... 50, 50, 50, 50, 50... turn... 75, 75, 75, 75, 75, 75" etc. and when I get to an multiple of 100 I sing that number as the Hallelujah Chorus. "Seeeeeeee-ven Hunderd! Seeeeeee-ven Hundred! Seven Hundred! Seven Hundred! Se-eeeve---nnn hunDRED!" I rarely forget what length I'm on.

How can you NOT moo at a cow? I will call you weird and strange if you don't.

This is more idiotic than a mere quirk, but I don't worry about my nutrition when running  or cycling at all. On my longer runs last year when ultra training, I wouldn't take water or nutrition with me. I brought a cell phone in case of emergency, but I wouldn't even worry about gels or liquids. I got through my runs fine and took in tons of calories afterward, but I'm sure that this slowed my recovery time greatly.

Currently I'm not going anything too long, and I don't plan on playing the ultra game anymore, so it's not as stupid as it once was, but it's a quirk nonetheless.

When on a long run, I always touch a sign/signpost/other marker for good luck at any turnaround.

And then I launch LOUDLY into "Total Eclipse of the Heart" (the song that begins, Turn around ...)

Great. Now I'll be stuck with that song every time I turn around.

You should just be glad you're not one of my running partners. 'Cause I'm sure you can imagine how much they LOVE hearing "Turn around" for the 1000th time ... especially considering the volume and (lack of) key.
