I have always been on to do my daily run after work, but now I am considering running around 5 or 5:30 AM. Do a lot of you do this? I have always been groggy and unable to, but over time Im sure Id adjust. Are there any reasons not to run so early in the morning?

When I workout early am the one thing I worry about is making sure I have something in my belly. And not too much at that.

I run at 5:30, manage it by getting up an hour early to drink coffee, watch the news, get my mind right, and to get the, uh, bodily functions going. It's not bad once you get into the cycle, of course I'm in bed by 9pm to get my required 7 1/2.

Can't think of any reason not to run so early, in fact, down here in the summertime it's required as it can be 90 degrees/90% humidity by 9am.

Would it be bad to wake up, eat right away and go for a run? I work 10-11 hours per day, so itd be much much easier to fit the run in the morning instead of at 7 PM at night.

I guess its personal, but my body would not be too happy about it. Probably both ends if i just slammed some breakfast (including some coffee) and decided to run!

I've had a hard time running in the morning, too. The Army fixed that. ;-)

Seriously, one of the things that really helps my morning runs is a smoothie. My wife and I bought a smoothie maker and I make a smoothie with whey powder first thing when I get up, while I'm making coffee. I drink a 16 oz. smoothie before my 20 min. drive to post. It doesn't fill me up or make me groggy and it does give me some energy during my run/swim. I have noticed that my morning workouts are better when I do this as well.

Everyone's going to be different, I wait until after my run to eat, unless I'm going really long (over 16 miles), then I'll eat light (a Clif bar or a small bowl of oatmeal) an hour or so before I run.

Experiment, see what works for you.

I run at that hour quite often. Up at 5 am, dress, light stretch, and off I go by 5:20. But if I might offer a piece of advice it would be that you don't have to run to get in a good run. In other words, I find it helpful to start out fairly slow - something like a high 8s or low 9 minute pace - and build gradually over the run, which for me is about 5 miles. Starting out slow helps get the kinks out, warms up the limbs and gets your heart and blood moving gradually. By the last mile or two, you can tear it up if you want. Good luck.

Before I moved I was getting up everyday at 6:00am, running on Tuesdays and Thursdays and doing core strength on MWF. Since I moved I have been getting up at anywhere between 5:15-5:30 to fit in my run or other workouts. I had little problem adapting to this but I usually eat after I run, depending on how I'm feeling I usually have a little gel before heading out, I've found this works out well for me.

It's all trial and error, but when I run in the morning, I have water and something light, one piece of toast with pb, and I'm out the door. It works for me. But oddly, I couldn't do a long run in the evening with just a piece of toast in me. I would have to eat, wait an hour, then go. The dine and dash ONLY works in the morning for me.

I'm up at 4:30 and out the door by 4:40 am, never eat anything before I head out, usually just a glass of gatorade before I take off.  If it's anything more than 10 miles, then I bring gatorade with me.  If you are going to make it a habit of running that early invest in a reflective vest.  I've found most drives on the road that early in the morning are not fully awake.

And one tip, put your alarm closk across the room, that way you have to get out of bed to turn it off.

I run at 5 am. I'm up, dressed and out the door. I can't eat before running in the am. I'm not a morning person AT ALL, so the less I have to do the better!! I try to drink at least a couple of bottles of water after running and before work, otherwise I'm thirsty all day!!

I used to be groggy, but I've gotten used to it. I second the advice about starting slow. I walk for a few minutes and get moving before I start the jog. And I take a sports drink with me. The calories in the drink seem to help while I'm going, and I don't have to eat anything else until I get back.

When the temperatures and daylight allow, I roll out of bed and head out around 5-5:30.  I usually walk the .4 miles to the end of my street while drinking a little water and eating a banana, do a quick stretch, then start running.  With the weather being lousy now I've been running at night on the treadmill, and hate it.  I have so much more energy in my legs in the morning, and I also find that being a little groggy makes the run go pretty quickly. Plus you feel great the rest of the day.

I try not to eat before an early morn run but if I must, I do a gel or gu pack with some water or gatorade. That holds me over.
You get into a routine and it's like clockwork........

How do you get out of the house so fast? I'm up at 4:30 and out by 5:10. Usually I have a power bar or banana. I run about 2-5 minutes then stretch.

I admire people who wake up early to workout. I always had a hard time doing that.

My wife is one of those who's up at 5:00 am to excercise at the Y. I have to stay home and watch the kids. In return, sometimes I work out late evernings. Thats a good trade off for me.

I admire all of you who do all the early shift. I wake around 6:30am and its hard enough just getting up, let alone thinking about exercise. All my workouts are lunchtimes and eves. May have to change though if I want to more than 6/7 workouts a week.

I run at 5:30 or 6 am.  Drink a cup of coffee and then hit the road.  I usually eat breakfast after running.  I prefer the morning runs...cooler temps, sunrise, fewer cars and people around, and I'm a 'morning person'.

I really like to go out early in the morning for a run when everything's quiet... I eat a small portion of fruits and cottage cheeze or yogourt when I wake up, then dress myself up and warmup. I go out about 15-20 minutes after I ate and run for 25 to 30 minutes. When I come back home, I either have a shower or breakfast or vice-versa. I reallt love to start the day this way...

When I get up for early training runs (4:30 am), I depend on GU.  I take one GU packet with a full glass of water 15 minutes prior to my run.  Sometimes the night before I have a late night carb snack.  It always seemed to work for me.

I'm notoriously bad at eating breakfast, but now that more of my training is early, I try and at least eat something, but it's usually a gel or a banana. I'm up and out quickly, most days up at 6:15 out by 6:30 for a ride or a run. I take a gel or two on my longer rides and run with a fuel belt that has a couple of bottles of extran in it.
Wednesdays, I'm up at 5 for 5:30 masters swim. I have a banana or piece of toast, as it's a 5 minute drive to the pool, and then 10 mins talking before we swim. After the swim I do my long slow run (about 12km at the moment) so I have a gel before I leave, and my extran in the fuel belt.

I'd like to have more in me sometimes, but I just can't get up earlier and eat then wait to run/ride.

A smoothie might be good, or just some chocolate milk.

Usually up by 4:30am, drink some water (gatorade for longer runs) do situp and pushups to get the blood flowing and watm up the core during the cold weather and am usually out of the house by about 4:45 or 5am. Love to get the workout out of the way, then when life (work, family, etc.) throws a kink in your schedule you know that the workout is done. It is a great feeling.

Good luck.
