Oshkosh couldn't be any less intimidating water-wise. I was highly annoyed at the dude walking around the far buoy for the Oly swim. Yes, that's right - walking around it - cause even that far out it's 5 feet deep.

That being said, there was a surprising lack of life guards this year.

Careful Deanna, some of us would still be underwater at 5 feet!

Not trying to be a jerk about this b/c any open water is scary to me, but I'm just making a point that unless you were actually in the situation, you really have no idea what it was like. Enough to scare a first-timer out of tris....I'm thankful this wasn't my first one.

If you were responding to my comment, I think you misread my intentions. I was agreeing that Winneconne is/was easy and suggesting it as a good swim for a first-timer. I would definitely NOT want to do any part of Lake Michigan (bay or not) for a first time tri.

Yeah, I did misunderstand it....thought you were saying Oshkosh just as intimidating as the bay. Not that it's a big deal in the first place, but I did misinterpret what you wrote.

I did my first tri and first OWS ever last year, the SOR 70.3, in Lake Michigan, with rough waters.  It was daunting and very tough.  But, I wouldn't recommend many first timers to do something like that.  I'm just a stubborn Donkey.
