We have another new Ironman 70.3 Series race being added to the schedule in 2009, this time it's the city of Calgary getting a new triathlon race in the series.

Very interesting...I've book marked it. Kind of leary entering a race for it's first go around but at the same time it is a bit reasuring to see Lisa Bentley endorsing the race...it has to be true, it's on the internet! My family lives just a few blocks away from the finish, I may just give it a try!...or rather...a T-R-I!!! hahahahahahahahahahahahhahahah!!

Don't worry, it's legit.  The WTC owns the domain.

Yeah, it's sometime scary doing the inaugural race, you never sure what's going to happen.  I haven't let that stop me especially in the 70.3 series, I've done these inaugural races Cancun 70.3, Pucon 70.3 and will do the Austin 70.3 race later this year.

Have you (or anyone else reading this) ever done a point to point race? Wondering if they bus you out to the start like the Vegas 1/2 Marathon for the start or shuttle you back to the start to get your car after you finish. Seems like a nice little logistical nightmare...well maybe not a nightmare but an issue none the less....I guess I could just wait for more information or skim the site myself...

Thanks for the heads up.  I think I'll make this my first HIM.  Ghost Lake can get pretty choppy so that will make it a pretty interesting swim.

What an awesome venue for a race. Banff is just a short drive away and an awesome place to make a little holiday out of the trip.

Best of all, this will be the 2nd Ironman Event that passes by Olympic Ski Jumps

Sweet! Count me in. Kind of sucks that it is only 3 weeks from Ironman Canada...I could maybe try to do it as a "fun" race. Dan, if you want...I have lodging about 6v blocks away from the finish line. Free and we just might get my Mom to make waffles on Race Day!

Vineman 70.3 was a point to point. We set up T2 the night before, and just reported to T1 for the start. We stuffed our swim gear into a bag at T1. They picked it up and delivered it to the finish point. They were running shuttles until 5PM back to the start for people who didn't have someone picking them up at the finishline. Biggest issue seemed to be that racers had to leave their bike at T2, because they didn't have room on the shuttle for the bikes. They said that they were providing bike security at T2 until 6PM, but fortunately, I didn't have to test this.

Hey, thanks for pointing out this thread... I rarely look at this forum section because I am not much of a travel racer... It will be cool to have an HIM in the city... endorsed by Ironman seems compelling to me!

Point to Point transitions make my head spin a little, but I think the scenery will be pretty spectacular. In fact, I think you can see my house from a section of the route... (we have a view of said Olympic Ski Jumps).

Let's see if I can talk myself into it in the next few days (before it fills up).

I was thinking of doing it but the World Police Fire games are the 8th...

Darn..I will have to make up my mind. If I want to do the games then I need to do more speed work. Or I can use this as a tune up for IMC which is 3 weeks away....

Any suggestions...comments that I can use to help with this decision?

I like that its all one loop or point to point...no double loops no passing transition a couple of times or passing the finish line...

If it snowed in June, it was probably a result of Global warming or El Nino. Seriously, the lake is right under the mountains so will be getting all the run off, however it is pretty shallow (average depth - 6M / 18') so it all depends on the spring and summer and if it is nice and warm. Right now the lake is around 19 C / 66F...so pack your wetsuit...and some mittens!

Ummmm I just found out the race is on the 8th...Thats a bit too late for Ironman. I would not want to go all out for an olympic 2 weeks prior to IMC...guess I will be haveing to dust off my boots!

Found out what race is on the 8th? THe Popo / Bucket head games? The IM 70.3 is on the 2nd of August, as per the web site....3 weeks out from IM Canada...I'm going to take it easy...probably wear my Batman costume!

I've been looking for current water temps for Ghost. Where did you find them? I've never swam there because I remember the water being too cold. But I can deal with the teens. Maybe I'll take my wetsuit and go out there this weekend.

Temperature for Calgary and area averages 25 deg C (77 deg F) this time of year. And the scenery in the area of the race is beautiful.

Oh, I realize that water temp will not be the same as next year. I could just use some more OWS practice for my Oly on Aug. 17th. Public lakes are somewhat hard to find near Calgary. You've got Chestermer (aka The Slough) and Ghost. Although I've never swam there, I've always remembered Ghost as VERY cold. That's why I'm interested where you obtained the water temp info.

And yes, I live in Calgary.
