New user 15 Omaha | Subject: RE: Black Squirrel Just how bad is this bike coarse? I emailed the race director a while back asking for the bike coarse (to check it out myself) and was told it was still up in the air due to road construction. I would like to do this race since it is local, works into my schedule, and I would like to see more races in the area by supporting them. If I do decide to do the race, and the coarse is the same. Is a road bike a better choice than a tri bike? Thanks, MIKE |

Veteran 192 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Black Squirrel in my opinion, it won't matter which bike you use if it is the old course because once you get on the bike path, it is two way traffic on a very narrow path with little to no room to pass anyway. There are several very sharp turns as well which are either poorly marked or not marked at all. If they were wise, they would just do multiple loops around the lake and use an honor system and chip timing. |

I like to hammer the bike and think I would just get frustrated there. Thanks for the info, MIKE Mike, here are a few screenshots of what the route was last year just to give you an idea, in case you're familiar with the area. For some reason it only came out to 12 mi. when I map it out. Those of you who did it last year - did I forget something? Did we spin around the lake once before we went out? I remember it came out to 18.XX miles... (MAP1.JPG) (MAP2.JPG) (MAP3.JPG) Attachments ---------------- MAP1.JPG (62KB - 23 downloads) MAP2.JPG (68KB - 23 downloads) MAP3.JPG (86KB - 21 downloads) |

Is a road bike a better choice than a tri bike? Thanks, MIKE Also - since the course has probably twelve feet of total gain [see: pancake flat] I'd say a tri bike would be the way to go - you won't need the taller gearing of a roadie. If you can get out of the water with the top people then passing shouldn't really be an issue until you get close to the turn-around. After that, and with all the slower swimmers and the next wave(s) coming at you, it gets really tough and about the only places to pass are at intersections or when you get on the road near the Wabash Trailhead and the road heading to/from the lake/transition area. Veteran 192 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Black Squirrel Brian, Thanks for posting the maps. As I recall from last year, we did do one loop around the lake before heading off on the trail. That first 6 miles or so around the lake is wide open, but not too straight as you are going around those winding streest fo the lake, especially on the east side. |

1 | Subject: RE: Black Squirrel I've always heard really BAD things about this race and for that reason I have never done it. This year, however, I may give it a go. I had hoped to go to missouri and race that weekend but seeing as how this race is in my backyard I think that may be the way to go.
I just want to race and there aren't really any around so I feel like I should take advantage of the ones that are. |

Thanks again, MIKE Just bear in mind that the RD may be taking peoples' suggestions into consideration this year and might not have the course quite nailed down yet. This year's course could look completely different from last year's, who knows! I'll be curious to see what things look like when they finally make a decision. Andy - thanks, I was wracking my brain trying to figure out how I only got 12 miles! pttriathlete - I'm with you all the way. I'd like to see more events around here so I figure I might as well support the ones that are already here, even if they're not as good as I'd like them to be. Edit: Didn't realize my wife was logged in. This is still Bripod! Edited by brynn 2008-08-03 8:23 AM |

Veteran 192 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Black Squirrel pttriathlete I totally agree with you. We have to support the local races we have and hopefully more will come. If nothing else, it is a great opportunity to get in an open water swim and a nice run with some like minded people. Speaking of like minded people. Hopefully I will finally get a chance to meet a few of you in person at the race. I am going to have my wife send in my registration once we get home. ie, no injuries this weekend at Steelhead, thank goodness. |

I have no idea what I'm wearing yet...besides bike shorts and some kind of top! Last time I checked, they had the run course posted, but not the bike. I REALLY hope this means they're putting together a new bike route. |

I was hoping for the run portion to be on the trail and the bike to be around the lake. I guess you could short the run on an out-and-back though so who knows. Bleh. I *really* hope the bike course is different! Even going out to HWY 92 [is it still under construction?] and around that way would be way better. Blocking off one lane of traffic isn't going to hurt anybody. |

Maybe you can find out what color your friends swimsuit is and we can match accordingly...maybe? That would be fun! Then we could look intimidating! Plus we'd be easy to spot. |

As far as my cycling tops go, I've got one that's a print in a couple different shades of blue and one that is black on the sides with a blue cheetah print on the front. I've also got a black and white top, a bright pink, and my tri top that is white/red/orange. My helmet is also blue...whatchya think? |
