Can we make this a all about the Olympics thread.  Like the Tour de France thread?

And so it begins and so forth....  Russia just lost 7 women to drug testing and one was a potential winner of the 800 and 1500.

Also some Fencer came up positive for Diuretic use.

Good grief.  It still astounds me that folks think that they can't/won't get caught!!

Be interesting to see who else is out before it all even starts.

Me, I've been getting my TiVo all setup for 8/8 and beyond - can't wait for it to get started!!

All I can think of is the Simpson's episode where Krusty does a contest for the 84 Olympics where if the US wins you get free food, and the East Germans or Russians *can't remember* are tossed out!

I am a huge Olympics fan.  I don't pay attention to the politics, I just appreciate the hard work the athletes have done to get there, and I love the human interest stories, especially about the ones who have overcome great adversity to get to where they are.  As an aside, I am hopeful that I will find someone in BC who will rent me their house for the 2010 Winter Olympics....I can't wait to go.

Anyway, I will be watching day and night (or whenever the kids let me near the TV).  It's gonna be a few weeks of riding the bike on the trainer, methinks!  I have a couple of friends who are there for the entire three weeks. I will look forward to their experiences--they have a great website they do with their travels, so I am sure I will be on that a lot, too.

What are your favorite events to watch???

Cycling! I'm looking forward to it more than I was to the Tour de France this year. A great local boy and some of the girls that I raced with during Superweek are going, so it's cool to "know" some of the athletes.

I am a huge track and field fan, cyling, swimming, soccer, and ohh triathlon.

My alltime favorite is under water basket weaving. The Brazilians Womens team is amazing and is a shoe in for gold. If those skills are not amazing enough. You should see what they can do with a cherry stem.

After watching the World Cup last year in Vancouver and the World Championships this year in Vancouver, I am looking forward to triathlon too. It's cool to have some idea of how the race plays out with certain competitors.

Does anyone have a link to what athletes are participating in each sport. For example I want to find all the athletes from every country in the Cycling Road Race and the Time Trial. I think the spanish road team is pretty strong, but want to see the others without having to hunt down each one individually.

I love the olympics, especially the summer olympics. I grew up on track and field and love the 400 and 800 along with their respective relays. And ever since Sydney I love the triathlon events for both M&F. Outside those events along with the opening ceremonies (don't know why I just love to see all the countries together and representing) I probably won't watch much of them. My DVR is set for the 4hrs of the opening ceremonies and then it''ll be set for the 17 & 18th of Aug for the triathlon. Ohter than that I'll just catch and watch w/e I happen to see.

I hate to see the drug stories that are happening way too often and tainting the olympics. I hope there are none that will be associated with the triathlon events.

I forgot about swimming, will watch those too but probably won't set to record any of 'em.

My favorite Olympics was 92 Barcelona games.  I took two weeks off from work, signed up for the Red, White and Blue package from the cable company and got to watch all the heats and rounds of events.

Just kills  makes me ill to watch NBC main coverage and shows the 23 place American and ignores the top 3 athletes.

Going to focus on Track and Field, Triathlon, Cycling, Swimming, some of the grappling   wrestling and probably some basketball....

Ignoring boxing, gymnastics, badminton, equestrian and __________.

I love the olympics - I will watch whatever event you put in front of me.

Special focus on Cycling, Swimming and running - and Triathlon.

Gymnastics (women's) as well as Shawn Johnson is a local girl.

Oh and I can't forge Lolo Jones, in the hurdles.  She is a Des Moines local as well.

That was based on the Easter Block boycott of the '84 Olympics, in response to the west's boycott of the '80 games. Before the '84 boycott was announce, McDonalds came up with a scratch off game where you win food if the US wins medals in the event on your card. Most of the cards were events the US doesn't typically do well in, but with the boycott we won just about everything. I remember eating for free that whole summer.

Hehe, it will be interesting to watch the olympics here in Britain...not sure who I'll cheer for. But I love watching the equestrian events, swimming and diving (there's a wee 14 year old English lad competing in the diving for Britain), triathlon, gymnastics, and the marathon. Anyone know if Paula is going to be running or if her backup is going?

Hopefully AFN will be covering most of the events I want to watch, mainly the 800 since that was my main even for track in high school, but I'm also probably going to take more than a passing interest in the triathalon this year.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Olympics. Tivo is set to record pretty much 24 hours a day. My fav events are diving, swimming, and T&F, but I'll watch pretty much anything. I'm excited for these games, especially with my Tivo so I can cut through all the human interest crap and watch actual competition.

I had seen that about the 7 Russian women. I think the worst part about it is that they are not coached by the same person, and they are in a whole range of events. It would seem to me the systematic doping of the communist block is alive and well (perhaps not so well after this week...)

That sucks for them. If I was rich and could afford it I would probably buy 5 or 6 TV's so I could watch all the channels that NBC is putting sports on at once just so I could watch everything.

5 more days!!! I love the Olympics because the Games have always had a positive impact on my weight. Seriously, I am doubly motivated every four years. Don't know why.

I haven't figured out what to watch and when to watch it. Not really a fan of NBC coverage.
