** I posted this in another thread a couple of days ago, this might be a better spot.

OK, first post.   Two weeks to go, and I have started tripping out.  I am from Florida, and we have no hills (my biggest clime is 12ft over 2 miles), and it is hot.  I was looking forward to the cool temps for this race, but now I am worried about freezing.  First, I have read that the lake will be 72F.  I have never been in 72deg water.  The gulf stays very warm.  And then to start riding in 57F.

Questions:
is 57F cold enough for gloves and long sleeves?
is the lake really going to be 72F?
I haven't ridden hills in 20 years.  I did the Gulf Coast HIM (2 miles from my house) and did the bike at a avg speed of 18m/hr.  does anyone have an idea of what the hills will do to my avg. speed?
Thanks

Hmmm, 72 degree water to me seems positively balmy. :-)

Yes, every thing I've read says the water will be around 70 degrees. Wetsuits are allowed and encouraged.

I don't know about you, but I hate being chilly so if it's going to be 57 on the ride then definitely will be recommended. I think I'm going to pick up some arm covers just for this race.

If you look at the bike map on the website, they have an elevation guide. There aren't many flat spots on it. From what I've heard, the hills aren't killers though. Of course, Florida hills are probably a lot different than Washington hills.

Good questions, hope you have a good race!

I'll be the 6'4 guy with the blue Cervelo P2 and (unless it's really cold) white IMH bike jersey. Say hi if you see me!

Questions:
is 57F cold enough for gloves and long sleeves? Check when the time get's closer, but you may be better off with Arm Warmers..... Easier to take off if you get warm.  Although 70 degree's may feel cold to you.  I think you should be fine!  It heats up here pretty quickly here...
Is the lake really going to be 72F?-- Yes at the minimum.... It is VERY DOABLE.  Not too worry.

I haven't ridden hills in 20 years.  I did the Gulf Coast HIM (2 miles from my house) and did the bike at a avg speed of 18m/hr.  does anyone have an idea of what the hills will do to my avg. speed?  I am sure other can chime in on this as well, but there is HUGE difference here.  Gulf Coast is pancake flat... Lake Steven's is one of the more challenging bike course's in the 70.3, but if I had to guess I don't think you would drop more than 2-2.5mph average speed.
Thanks

This is a great course, and great area.  You will have a good time!!

here is the course on mapmyride.com
http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/wa/lake-stevens/545527619

elevation gain is 1125 per loop or 2250 total.  if you are used to flat, this is going to be much different!! i haven't ridden the course yet, but i hope to this weekend.

Thanks Russ.  I just had a great swim yesterday, so I'm not worried about that.  The run is just going to go as the run goes. I think the bike is going to be the big unknown for me this race.

Those were great tips you listed up above.

Thanks,
Rich

Wow, thanks for the info.  A 2mil/hr drop, that's what I was afraid of.  I think I'll take it easy to begin with on the bike and see how I do on the hills.  If it's slow, I'll just take it easy the whole way and hit the run hard.  If it looks like I can maintain a good pace, I'll go for it.

The race reports on BT are great, I have learned alot about this race by reading others reports.

Thanks

it will be marked on race day, thursday/friday - i doubt it will be marked.  if you go to www.mapmyride.com or mapmyrun.com and just do a search for rides/runs in lake stevens, the course will be one of the first things that comes up.

I've ridden the course a few times and find it easy to go out way too fast.  Some of the hills in the out and back section are steep and easy to hammer on.  I find its easier to ride without a speedometer on my bike on the course.  Otherwise its so easy to get caught up in stressing about speed and pace.

If you not local and looking to preview the course, I would recommend getting the mapmyride map and then DRIVING the course first before you ride it.  I was an out of towner who went up to pre ride the course 2 yrs ago.  I had the race map and went out on the bike thinking I knew where to go.  I think I missed the first turn and then proceded to ride a 5-6 mile detour before getting back on to the actual course.

My only other tip would be to really hydrate on the bike.  My quads paid a price on the hills and I ended up cramping on the run by mile 8 or 9.
Best of luck to all.

Good luck to everyone racing this Sunday!  Looks like it will be good weather, not too hot!  I'll look forward to reading all of the race reports!!

(I'll be doing the Beaver Lake sprint on Saturday, still prepping for Grand Columbian HIM.)

Unable to ride the course at that time.  For me needs to be in mornning or evening. If you get this before riding course be careful the pavement will still be very slick with the descents you will hit aprox. 50mph on wet roads.

great (looking) race yesterday! The fog on the swim was pretty cool.

Hope the AG'er who hit the dog doing 50mph is ok. (Did anyone racing see it?).

I didn't see it, but I think it was our very own Snailfish. I hope he's alright.

The race and weather was great. The fog was kind of weird not being able to see more than 100 yards on the swim. I did see the AG'er go down however I did not realize he hit a dog it was on the first lap and still lots of people riding close together. The accident was disturbing to see as he went down extremely hard. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.

That was BT'er Snailfish - sounds like he is OK for the most part, but the crash sounds pretty bad.  very unfortunate, as i'm sure he was on his way to a great race .  stop by his blog and Inspire!

Good job, Mike!  I will go check Marc's blog to see if he's posting yet.  That is heartbreaking to have a crash caused by a dog.  Did anyone find the dog??
