Expert 938 | Subject: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ My cube mate is shocked I eat the same thing every day. I pack my breakfast and snacks for work, and I get the same lunch in the cafe. I told him, during the week, I could almost care less about what I am eating, other than: "will it give me the fuel I need to do my afternoon workouts." Dinners (not by much) and weekends (Sundays are my fun days) are varied, but 5 days a week, for months now I truly eat the same thing. I'm just checking to see if anyone else does the same thing. Is there anything inherently unhealthy about this, other than my addiction to Clif bars (2 sometimes 3 a day depending on workout)? |

Expert 810 Southeast | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ Not me. The only things I put in my mouth that I don't enjoy eating are Gu and medicine. The answer to your question obviously depends on what you are eating, but in general, a more varied diet is a healthier diet. |

Master 1741 Chapel Hill, NC | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ I definitely eat for fuel. If I ate for desire, I'd be back to where I was 5 years, and let me tell you, it wasn't pretty. I live on oatmeal and PB&J. About the only variety there is what type of bread, and flavor of jelly. I get really annoyed at my kids because they want variety in their lunches! The nerve! I tell them that food is sustenance, and they look at me like I'm nuts. I do take a multi-vitamin in case I'm not getting everything out of my PB&J's! |

I tried some on Saturday, between my ride and run (training),and I had to reach for my Camelback almost immediately to flush it down. I was thinking to myself, "Jeez, that was quite the orange tasting throat oyster you just mushed into your mouth." It was like slimy peanut butter...it just wouldn't all go down easy. It did not help the GU was in my car and was probably about 100 degrees. |

Extreme Veteran 305 Lewisville | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ Fuel during the week and both on the weekends. During the week I basically eat the same thing as well... especially for lunch. It's either Subway or Quiznos. I got a lot of "Subway again? Don't you get sick of that?" It's more about getting something somewhat healthy, and can give me the energy I need to train at night. Dinner varies though as my wife tends to cook during the week. Breakfast is usually a peanut butter and banana sandwich, which I have eaten every day for at least a couple months (when I'm not traveling). Edited by Jazon71 2008-08-25 12:11 PM |

Champion 9600 Fountain Hills, AZ | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ During the week at work I eat the exact same thing every day in the same quantities and at the same time. I am very habitual (ie. OCD and a little crazy . Everyone comments on it. I eat for fuel but I do very much enjoy what I eat. What I eat is extremely healthy but a lack of variety can also be a bit bad from a total nutrition standpoint I have learned but I still find it hard to break the weeday habits. Dinners will always vary. |

Champion 4942 Richmond, VA | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ I find a comfortable mixture in between. I have "guidelines" for my eating, based merely on trying to eat healthy (e.g. no fried foods, only whole wheat bread, eat 5-6 times a day, small meals, approx. 2200 cal per day) but within those guidelines I tend to eat more for "desire" keeping the guidelines in place. btw : did you know a bag of BBQ chips out of my breakroom at work has only 180 and no trans fat? |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ I try and eat for fuel but choose things I like mostly or in time become accustom to. I have eaten the same breakfast for five years if it is a regular training day... friend's laugh at that....I do eat alternate breakfast before long rides or runs but always the same. I find it interesting some eat the exact same thing each day. I tend to narrow in on a few things I eat and repeat them over and over. When I worked lunches were strikingly similar...kale veggie soup, spinach salad, and left over grilled meat usually chicken...and some fruit. I think if you consume food in it's natural form and a good variety it is fine, but if you narrow your food choices to much ie not enough veggies or fruit might be good to add in some variety. Mountain View, CA | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ Both. I like to keep my food primarily balanced and healthily, not just for training but for my overall health. So in that sense, the fact that it's fuel for my body informs my eating choices. But I would get SO depressed if I ate the same thing every day*. I do go through phases when I make a certain dish frequently, but never more than two days in a row. I get bored! And more importantly, there are so many delicious things to eat! It's impossible to fit them all into one day, so each week I look at what fruits and veggies I'm getting, and I write up a menu of what I'd like to make with them over the course of the week. I make things that fuel me well, but I will rarely (if ever) make something that I don't also like to eat. It works out pretty well. * The exception to this is breakfast, which has been minor variations on a very consistent theme for a while now. First thing in the morning I'm not thinking straight and if I'm going to get up and immediately head off to work or a workout, I like to have a simple, predictable bit of food already in the fridge. I love my yogurt + muesli + fruit in the mornings. Edited for clarification. Edited by puellasolis 2008-08-25 12:33 PM |

Champion 10668 Tacoma, Washington | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ It's more that there are things I avoid because I either REALLY don't like them, or they don't fuel me well enough. But I'm a lot like you in that my breakfast and snacks are pretty much the same every day. |

Pro 4612 MA | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ Pure desire. Unless there is a medical condition no one can dictate what I should or should not eat. I am the one who eats a red meat-dorminat BBQ dinner before a 1/2 marathon. But I do eat sensibly most of the time, and enjoy many of the healthy foods. |

Lafayette, CO | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ This is actually a work in progress for me. I grew up with food being reward for something well done. Or for eating. In other words if I finished my far too large dinner I got dessert. Yeah, I'll give you one guess what that set me up for. But, over the last few months I have finally started to see my brain change to a point where when I get up on a training morning I think more about what I need to eat to fuel my workout. Or for an afternoon snack before a workout it's about providing my body with the fuel that it needs. Now, that's not to say I don't totally enjoy good food. The 11 course small plates dinner I had a couple of weeks ago will attest to that. It's a totally different way of thinking rather than allowing or not allowing myself to have certain foods. |

Extreme Veteran 428 | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ I eat for fuel because it's what I need when training. I've found a bunch of really healthy things I love to eat so just pick and choose from them each day. No measuring or weighing for me. I'm also really lucky that my wife is a fabluous cook and makes stunningly tasty healthy meals so I get plenty of variety there. She takes care of dinner (which often leaves leftovers for lunch) so all I have to worry about is first breakfast, second breakfast, morning tea, afternoon tea, late night snack.... |

Extreme Veteran 426 Dearborn, Michigan, USA. | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ I'm like you- I eat nearly the same, identical thing every single day, day after day. It works for me. Food is fuel and nothing else. If you don't view it that way it will hurt you. Coffee, on the other hand, that is luxury... |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ I eat what I want and what sounds good at the time. I do make considerations for my training though. Generaly the best energy sources I can find. I may eat pasta the night before a long bike or run, lean chicken or beef... But food is meant to be enjoyed IMO. I love to cook and eat a wide variety of items. Yes, we could all live on some basics that are just "fuel", a la the "mush" on The Matrix, but food is more than just fuel to me. It brings people together, it can be used to celebrate and enjoy life... There is so many things in life to try that are healthy and good for you. Seems silly to me to restrict yourself to just a fraction of those day after day. |

Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: Do you eat for fuel, desire, or both (on average)+ Both. I try to eat a varied diet with a focus on vegetables, fruit and lean protein, but I also eat outside of those categories daily. I do find myself falling into eating the same thing everyday, but like the other poster said, you lose out on key nutrients when you do that. I constantly scan the produce aisle for something new to try to give my diet a boost. |
