Subject: Why do saddles have a nose?
So I've been wondering for quite a while now, why do bike saddles have long noses? I'm sure it's some simple reason, but I'm stumped. Can anyone enlighten me?

To hook onto the bar at transition

Oh, some people actually rock forward that far but mostly I use it to hook onto the bar.

I push back so my sit bones are still on the spread out part of the seat when aero, kinda laid out. Now that I think about it I guess I'm no longer technically sitting, though

I always get jealous of people who can do that.  My seat sits so far above the bar that the bike is usually falling over if I try to hook it like that.  I end up having to hook by my shifters, which I am not too crazy about.

When I descend fast I stand on my pedals and squeeze the nose of my saddle with my thighs.

My nose isn't that big compared to others, just looks funny to some!

ISM seat are not your typical looking seat but they work great.

I just put on the Adamo road saddle and have gone out on two short rides with it ... comfy is NOT the word I would use to describe it

I know, I'm just getting used to a new saddle and I don't get numbness any more, but it's as hard as a rock.  I really, really hope it gets better!

In long fast descents in road bike races, cyclists, who normally sit back 73% in the saddle reach out for a more aerodynamic position.  In order to do this, they sit far forward on the nose of the saddle (appr 75 or 76%),  hands in the bottom of the bars and chin near the stem.

I guess I've thought about grabbing the nose between legs for stability and I've seen people sitting forward like that. I can't say that looks very comfortable though. It just strikes me as a little odd that they developed like that from back in bike history.

Oh, and skipg, I think you may be on to something.

I've never felt comfortable having a nose tucked up between my legs. I think I'd be more comfortable if they called it something else.

It's supposed to be for bike control. You may not realize it but you push on the nose while turning, etc.

I agree with you. But, I do like it better than the previous "single nose" saddle I had. Spreading the pressure out to a wider area is much more comfortable for really long rides. I"ve only really done one century and my IM, but I haven't hd any saddle sore issues with it.

i have noticed that it isn't as comfortable out of the aero position. Not that it is a bad thing. Keeps you in your place.

to those posters above wondering about the adamo, just tough it out, it will get better, i promise. that seat just takes some getting used to and toughening up the undercarriage a bit.

Not if you ride right on the nose, or use a noseless saddle like the Adamo; at least not if you're siting on it properly so that there's none of the saddle right between your legs.

wait. so in aero (I'm not sitting in aero) you are sitting on the nose? So are your sit bones pressing against the wider parts of the seat? or are they kind of in the air or not touching??
