Let me preface this by saying that my experience playing soccer/football is limited to intramurals and AYSO when I was a kid, and American football is about the same, with a few pick up games here & there.

I've tried to get into soccer, in fact I make an effort every time the world cup rolls around.  I enjoy watching soccer highlights as much as any sport, its just for the casual fan to be a lot of down time for a few minutes of intense action.  Plus the flopping doesn't help my view. of it.  Am. Football may take a lot of breaks, but every time the ball is snapped, there is potential for a game-changing event to occur.

One question I do have for the folks who know soccer well, what's up with the offside rule?  I'm faster than you on a break-away (sorry for the hockey term), but if I beat the last defender the play is whistled dead?

Not the person - it's the ball that is faster.  If you run with the ball passing all the defenders, you're ok.  But when you are running toward a ball that is being passed by someone else, and that ball flew past the defenders, you are "offside".

The idea is that you can't have someone to just stand close to the net and wait for others to pass you the ball.

Ok, I play hockey, so to me that seems like a defenseman can sit on the red line (center ice) and someone on the other team can't get between the D-man and the goalie to receive a break out pass, seems like it slows the game down, keeps it bottled up.  Does the defense in soccer pinch up a lot in this manner?

Offsides in hockey and soccer are different. You ahve the blue-line.....soccer has the 'last defender'. It's not beneficial for a defender to stand near mid-field or to bottle neck like that. All it takes is one lofted ball or far pass and the forward is GONE......past the defender and is one-on-one with the keeper. The foward (or offensive player) only has to be 'even' with the last defender/player in order to be on-sides.....that being said.....you wouldn't want to gamble like that.

I hope that was your question and/or it answered what you were looking for.

I played American football for 10 years and love the sport!  Played soccer for a couple of years as a kid, but never really played much past 3rd grade.

However, I have been playing on a 30+ coed team within a local rec league, and have been having a blast since we started practicing last May.  First game is in three weeks, and I can't wait!

However, I can't say that I'm a huge fan of watching soccer.  I will tune in to the World Cup games sometimes, but I don't follow any one team.  I WILL follow the Rugby World Cup and will cheer on the All Blacks ... those guys are just flat-out baaad!

Awwww.... Hells Yeah!

That's what I'm tawkin' bout!!!

As bcart said, I'm one of the resident soccer/football/futbol/footy nut cases on the site.  Glad you recognize the beautiful game.

I'm a Liverpool Fan. Through and through.  Bleed red and you can see by my sig below and at my logs that I like 'em quite a bit.  Followed them when I was little cause my Nana and Grandad lived just outside of Liverpool in a place called the Whirral.  Now with the Internet and TV I can catch just about every single match.  Even when I'm at work.  At least I get to listen to it.

I'm also a Chicago Fire fan.  Season ticket holder (second season) and love it.  The quality of play continues to improve (still light years behind other leagues in the world) and they have a lot of room for it too.  And I think they have finally figures out a way to make the league stick around.

So you want to talk footy, let's talk footy.

BTW, I'm loving the fact that LFC beat ManUre.  Love it, love it, love it.

a troll? Hardly. Just offering my opinion that soccer is boring as a spectator sport.  It's fun enough to play, but watching bores me to tears.

Let's see.

Unsolicited opinion in a thread asking for others that LIKE the sport.

Opinion is a slam of said sport.

Hit and run post with little to no value that is mainly designed to incite.

If you would have been at the Galaxy game on saturday night I doubt you would have said that. It was all action, not near EPL standard but an action packed game nontheless.

I'll be seeing them live on Thursday night against the Fire.

Should be an interesting match.  We need a win.  Badly.

You know what I miss about soccer after I came to the U.S.?  It's the enthusiasm of the fans, The joy of watching the game and the excitement.

1990 World Cup, I was in high school.  School was out and I was working a summer job.  Due to the time difference, TV broadcast the game live at 3am.  The whole city of Hong Kong stayed up to watch the live coverage, then showed up at work half asleep, only to wake when there was discussion about last night's action among coworkers.

In 2002, WC was co-hosted by Japan and Korea.  I was in HK during the last week of the game, and all games were played at local prime time.  The whole city practically halted for actions in the game.  Imagine a street full of New Yorkers in Time Sq, everyone stopped walking and stared at the big screen and cheered when there was a goal.  And HK does not even qualify to play.

Yeah, HK (and the Chinese for that mattter) soccer sucks.  But we are big fans of international teams.  There are detail coverage and analysis of all the Major league games in Europe.  Once Man. United took a tour to Asia and played a game with the HK team.  Granted we knew they're going to beat the hell out of HK, and everyone in the stadium was cheering for Man U. All you could hear was "Owen! Owen!".  Then for some crazy reason HK scored a goal.  The crowd went nuts.  The cheering shoke the nearby buildings.

Oh the good times.

I was in Singapore for WC2006.  That was an amazing experience.  Everywhere you went, there were big screen TVs.  Every restaurant had the games on.  Best of all, there were *2* channels dedicated to the WC 24 hours a day.  During the day, they would replay the games from the previous evening on one channel, and provide breakdown and commentary on the other channel.  It was great.

Well I'm hoping for a Galaxy win, they had gone winless for 12 games up until Saturday night. My son and daughter got to meet the Galaxy team at the game last saturday including my sons hero DB.

Yes he's 14 and typically he plays right wing or inside right. I used to play in my younger days (I grew up in England) but know at the ancient age of 48 with a messed up ankle I can't even play on a local rec team.

Right then.

So, let's keep this topic going.  Footy only.

Any footy topic is fair game.

As I follow LFC and the Fire, I will probably focus on that.  Oh and the USMNT.  Speaking of LFC, narrow victory yesterday.  Then again, we did not have our best on the pitch the whole match.  Read through some of the review of it and just glad we are through to the next round of the Carling Cup.

Should be an interesting season in the EPL.  Nothing short of finishing top of the table will satisfy me this year.  I'm fed up with finishing 3 or 4.  Getting old.  We need #1.  Anything less will be a dissapointment.

Huge football fan. Played as a kid, in college and currently. While I was in England getting my MBA I worked for Arsenal on the business side. This was a great chance to see some amazing games for free.
I do not like Arsenal, the stadium happened to be a short ride from my flat so it worked well. I am actually a Tottenham fan, which is crazy because Arsenal and the Tottenham are rivals.

After yesterday's run, I'm thinking my knee will be fine for this Sunday's match. Now, will I survive the mountain ride that morning? That's a whole other thread in itself.

I'm trying to work my way out of defensive duties and back into midfield, but they keep pulling me back in...

I guess I'm kind of a Liverpool fan myself.

Heh.  I never had the footwork to be able to make it out of the back field.  Heck, I was so big, they usually just stuck me in goal.  Which wasn't bad, cause I was actually 1/2 decent.

I was never quick enough to get up to the front line. I can put the ball wherever I want to, it just might take me an extra touch sometimes. I'm money on free kicks too.

Actually becoming a respectable keeper too.
