Yeah I was midfield fro the first 20 years I played. Ended up in defense by accident. "Yeah, I'll play defense if no one else wants to." Didn't totally suck at it, so I stayed.

I'll get out to midfield for a game or two, but I always seem to end up at marking back for most of the season.

After yesterday's run, I'm thinking my knee will be fine for this Sunday's match. Now, will I survive the mountain ride that morning? That's a whole other thread in itself.

I'm trying to work my way out of defensive duties and back into midfield, but they keep pulling me back in...

I guess I'm kind of a Liverpool fan myself.

Not sure what's wrong with your knee but good luck on getting back out there. My ankle is jacked up after too much ligament damage, it swells up like a balloon after only playing for ten minutes. I can run ok but running and twisting on the field is impossible. I am reduced to helping my son by kicking in corners and stuff to help him get his coordination down on volleys and headers.

Mtn bike is also one of my big passions, and you're right surving is what it's all about.

I am a Chelsea fan myself, have been since I was a boy. I try to watch most of Englands games although I am almost ashamed to admit it. They have some tremendous players but as a team they are very weak.

I watch games here and there but I am not an avid follower any more, although after going to the Galaxy game on saturday I may get back into it. Watching live is so much better even if it is only MLS.

Yeah.  I was pretty happy with it at first but now, I'm not so sure.  Still it is early in the season.  I'm hoping he can start to compliment Torres quickly or at least sooner rather than later.

Frankly, they need that two some to start producing soon.  I have a feeling that it will become a bit more difficult for Torres this year as it is his second year and teams will have a full years worth of tape on him to figure out how to defend against him.  Only time will tell.

Dang, thought this would be about college football....not a *real* football fan in the least. I don't see how a final score of 1-nil can be at all exciting. It's like watching tennis. I guess it's classic case of 'to each his own'....

Nope...don't watch baseball...period....totally a snoozer sport like soccer, tennis, bowling (but I used to bowl), golf (but I golf when I can), NBA basketball (which I think is as close to fixed as you can get without being called the WWF), ummm...anything else? I watch college football and some college hoops....Just my bias....I see how people like soccer. Just like people like watching show horses, rodeos, dog shows, rowing, water polo,...etc...what you grow up with tends to be what you like....

and to the above post two above, Auburn/Miss St. was pathetic. Although at least in a 3-2 college game there are hard hits most every play....now with euro 'football', the occasional red card play where a guy 'tackles' (what an over-blown way to describe a play) is ok, but half the time they fake it...ain't no way a guy rolling in *agony* is really hurting when 10 seconds later he is up and going at full speed...

Absolutely! A 1-0 game this time of year can be as tense and dramatic as anything.

And so can a 0-0 or 1-0 soccer match when at any given moment something can happen.

While I can't deny that some flopping does occur, many times the injuries are quite real. These guys are flying around at full speed with no pads other than shins. One of the ways to take the ball away on defense is to dive feet-first at the ball--with cleats. You can't tell me that wouldn't hurt if he hits your leg instead. Or two guys go for a header and skulls collide---ouch! And just plain high-speed collisions. Definitely a violent contact sport.

Well,  I'm off to watch the Fire v Galaxy match tonight.  Hopefully the Fire will play better than they did when they got thumped 4-1 against FC Dallas this past Sunday.

Shall I say hi to Posh for you guys and see if I can get Wilman Conde to take someone out at the knee caps?  Just kidding.

I hope you have a good time there, however I feel that Galaxy will give your guys a trouncing. Maybe another hat trick for Donovan. Galaxy have scored 51 goals this season and given up 49 Yikes!! It could be a high scoring game. I am going to see if it's on tv tonight.

WRONG!  Next issue!

Heh.  Landycakes was virtually non-existant on the pitch last night.  I almost forgot he was out there till 1/2 way through the first half.

And I can see why they have given up 49 goals.  That one that the GK gave up against Blanco was just stupid. I had a great angle on it when it started and as soon as he came out of his box I knew it was going to be a score.  Just horrible defending.  Maybe Arena can help them out of that pickle in the off season, but for now, they will not be going anywhere anytime soon.

And I heard a rumor that Landon wanted to give Europe another go?!?!  I don't know how good of an idea that may be.  Have you heard anything?

Crowny, I am now embarrased about my prediction and also about the Galaxy's terrible defending. You are right about Wick's the keeper, he made some bad errors last night just as he did on Saturday night. Also, Buddle needs a good kick up the arse, he gets more chances to score than he should but can't seem to put it in the net. Your guys played exactly the right game against the Galaxy and it worked well. I don't think either team played a great game but the Fire had the defense and a couple of breaks which against the Galaxy is all it takes. Donovan needs to get his head on straight, he is a great player but as you say he was pretty much shut down. It was a scrappy game from Galaxy and not one player really played well. Beckham put in some great balls from the corner which were totally wasted but other than that he had a lack lustre game.

The ref did a good job of keeping the game going, not too many free kicks last night.

Not sure about Donovan going to Europe, I hadn't heard that. I hope he stays with the Galaxy as he really is exciting to watch when his head is in the game.

now that the US is the proud owner of 80% of AIG, does that mean the US flag will be on the front of Man U's jersey next season?

Either that or the issue makes the sponsorship null and void and ManUre has to find a new sponsor.

Heh.  Yeah. I've had plenty of predictions rammed down my throat so I try not to make them anymore.

Agreed.  The refs were decent.  I don't know if they showed it, or even talked about it last night, but when Blanco came off the field (sub) he didn't go to the bench.  Straight to the locker room.  He didn't even recognize the crowd.  I have a feeling he was super ticked.  Not necessarily at being pulled, but at how many times he was hit.  In the ankle.  On the shoulder.  In the head.  In the kidneys.  I know I counted at least 8-10 hits, away from the action and the eyes of the ref, that had they been seen, it would have been a foul at a minimum and a card (possibly red on one of them) at the max.  Did they say anything about it on TV?

Well I don't recall anything being mentioned but they did show him walking back down the tunnel and not going back to the bench. I think he was worn out to be honest (still not a reason to not sit on the bench). The clash he had with Wicks didn't look that bad from the 15 replays they showed on the tv. Where did you think there was a red card incident?

I saw an elbow to the head WELL away from play, (Blanco was trying to get around the player to get a better position).  Blanco looked up, saw no refs were watching and kept going.  Had a ref been watching, he would have been on the floor.

Oh yeah.  Totally.

I also happen to watch him, and Rolff and McBride.  And in actuality, Blanco gets the crap beat out of him every game.

I agree that 1/2 of his falls are dives, but he is trying to get some make up calls for when he gets absolutely mugged.

Oh, and I was talking to the wife last night, and even though he has another year on his contract (I think) I really wouldn't be surprised if he up and retires at the end of this season.

He certainly looks like his career is coming to an end, he looks like an old man (not sure how old he is). Still has the skills but obviously not the speed and endurance he once possessed.

Isn't Blanco captain? If he hangs it up is McBride captain material or are there better candidates? I know McBride played for Fulham in the EPL but otherwise don't really know much about him.

A little Footie story - when I was coaching for the Illinois ODP program, Brian McBride was cut from the u-17 team - deemed to slow - guess that coach is regretting that decision....I've followed his career since - he is a good player and even better ambassador for US soccer

Yeah, Brian would probably be El Capitan.  Then again, for the past few years it had been Chris Armas.  And at the beginning of this year it was CJ Brown.  Both defenders and darn good ones.

There is a fairly common rule of thumb that the capitan is on the defense as he can SEE what is going on and DIRECT from there.  Now, whether that still holds true today can always be argued.
