Subject: Swim Goggle suggestions?
Hello BT!  I am new to the tri world and new to the boards.  I was a competitive swimmer for 15 years (all the way through college) but haven't done much of anything athletic in the last 14 years.  I've gotten pretty fat and lazy as a result, so I decided to do my first tri this past weekend and dropped 30 pounds in getting ready.  Still have about 30 more to drop, but I'm looking for some advice.  I have always been a diehard "swedish goggle" fan from my competitive swimming days, but I'm not sure that they're that great for open water swimming since they tend to fog pretty quickly.  I'm just curious if anyone else, especially those who are familiar with the swedish goggles, has any suggestions.

I'm a huge fan of Sable goggles. They're on the expensive side, but I believe them to be worth it. Extremely comfortable and I haven't had any fogging problems.

Swedish Goggles pre-coated with "cat crap".  Clear as a bell, cheap, no gaskets.  Can't beat'em.

Mike,

I'm sorry, but I can't put much faith in anything you suggest since you're from Rochester, NY!  Just kidding!  I was actually born and raised in Rochester -- lived there for 20 years!  Small world!  Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll see if I can find anyone locally with them so that I can try them out.

Does that anti-fog stuff really work?  I know when I was swimming competitively it seemed to be all junk.  I'm sure the technology has come along way since then, but I'm curious how well it works.  Anyone else have success with anti-fog solutions?  I do love the fit of swedish goggles.  I've never had any problems with leaking and they don't feel all bulky in the water!

I've purchased at least ten types of goggles in the last year... always looking for that perfect pair.  My personal favorites at the moment are the Speedo Speed Socket and the Speedo Vanquisher Plus.  The Speed Socket is great for visual clarity and peripheral vision but they're not quite as comfy as the Vanquisher.  I tried Swedish for one swim but they just didn't seem to suit me.  As for the Speedo goggles, as long as I let them dry completely between uses I rarely have a problem with fogging.  If I do, spit seems to solve the problem nicely.

I 2nd the Speedo Speed Socket.  I swam for years in summer league and we all used Swedish but yeah they do fog like crazy and did not transition at all to Tri training and racing.  I bought the speed sockets and LOVED EM.  Never have fogged during training and I spray em with fog solution right before a race and have never had a problem.  The best part about em is I don't think I have ever experienced a leak, which is probably why most people are so picky about goggles.

Yeah if you liked the swedish for swimmings, for triathlons I would suggest the Speed Sockets from Speedo or the Socket Rockets from Tyr.

I really like my Blue Seventy Visions, but I'm a total rookie swimmer, so take it with all appropriate grains of salt.

Thank you to everyone for the input.  For those that are suggesting the speed sockets, what is the big difference between those and the swedish goggles?  Would I be just as well off if the anti-fog stuff works (I just ordered cat poop, I mean crap) last night online, so it should arrive next week.  What is the advantage of the speed sockets vs. just using the anti-fog on my swedes?

I also come for a competitive swimming backgrounds and love my sweeds.  However, I switched to speedo or tyr for tri swimming.  Not only do the sweedish goggles fog easier, but the also hurt more if you happen to get kicked in the face during a mass start.  The speedo or tyr I wear have the silicone (?) soft eye sockets.  Much more forgiving to a kick or a hit.  :-)

Well with the Swedes after about 30 min. in the pool they really would start to hurt my eyes, whereas the Speedo's were definitely more comfortable.  Also with the Swedes I started noticed frequent leaking when I was swimming which was very frustrating and distracting, something I have not experienced one time with the Speed Sockets.

That's a good point.  I didn't think of the impact of a foot or hand.  I did Emerald Pointe here in Georgia this past weekend and it was my first.  I was 6th in my AG out of the water, so luckily there weren't many kicking or hitting me.  Only problem is I spiked my HR so high on the swim that I had to walk to the transition area.  It was a HUGE hill and I was already 23rd in my AG by the top.  Come to think of it, are there any goggles that will help me run faster?!?!?

Another former competitive swimmer here (and former Speedo devotee).

For triathlons (and even for training), I prefer Aqua Sphere Kaimen goggles. I like the larger FOV for OWS and the comfort is outstanding. The Aqua Sphere goggles also don't seem to scratch up as easily. I swear, I could breathe on my Speedo googles wrong and they would scratch. I will never, ever own anything other than Kaimen goggles these days.

For anti-fog I use Aqua Sphere anti-fog solution. You apply it to your lens and let it set for two minutes before rinsing and wearing. It's usually the first thing that I do when I get to the pool. By the time I put on my cap and get my lane situated, two minutes is up. I don't rinse with clear water, I rinse with pool water. Works fine. The Anti-Fog properties will last a good 50 to 60 minutes as long as I don't take the goggles on and off. That's really the key... keeping them on your face.

I can't imagine wearing anything other than swedish. It would feel like I was cheating on my girlfriend.

Yep.  It works.  Just gotta remember to treat the goggles every two or three swims.  BIG difference if you forget.

I tend to wear kids goggles -- Tyr Technoflex Juniors -- they work well for me.  My pals that train with the Swedish googles race with them as well -- you'll probably be fine if you use a new pair.  My training buddies that don't use the Swedish really like the Blue Seventy goggles.  Hope this helps, gordo

Go to the swim store, find the goggles that fit your face and stick well without the head strap. If they seal well without the strap you found the right ones.

x3 on AquaSphere Kaimens. I just bought a second pair this year. Nice peripheral vision. Good clarity. No fogging so far.

I have been using speedo vanquisher goggles and couldn't be more happy.  I too was a hardcore swedish goggle user in high school, I bought some swedes and the vanquishers at the same time just to test them out, but I'll never go back.  I didn't realize they were fog proof until after the fact and they're still fogproof after 2 years without me doing anything to them.

Luckily, goggles aren't insanely expensive so you can try 2-3 pair without a huge hole in your pocket.
