Expert 1288 Hatboro, PA | Subject: RE: Philadelphia Marathon GatorGirl22 - 2008-10-17 7:13 AM I'm doing ok...back from a little hiatus. I'm doing the half, so luckily my runs won't be too long. I'm up to 7.5 miles this weekend (following Galloway plan), so I feel pretty good. I'm just hoping we have good weather in Philly, and there aren't too many hills. Anyone know how tough the course is? 34th Street is an incline the entire way and lasts for a couple of miles. (I used to live at 34th & Powelton, so I've walked 34th Street many times.) I don't know of any other big inclines on the half-marathon course. I'm also doing the half. My longest run was 15 miles last weekend. I have another 15 miler tomorrow and then 12, 15, 12, 8. I ran the PDR in September, so I am already in half-marathon shape. I have just been increasing my long runs to 15 miles, so I don't die as badly in the last couple of miles of the half-marathon. I am also an extremely slow runner. |

I think I am changing my running plan to the following: 30+ miles this week, LR 14 ; 40+ miles, LR 16 50+ miles, LR 20 35-40 miles, LR 16 (possibly 18 or 20, depending on what my body tells me) 30+ miles, LR 10 taper week ... easy runs, 2 super-short tempo runs I'm 16 - 18 - 20 for the next three weeks so not far off what you're planning. |

Subject: RE: Philadelphia Marathon FWIW, I wouldn't do 50+. Hold steady near 40. You may very well be right. I'm pretty in-tune with my body, and I'm going to see how I feel. If I feel like I'm getting too lethargic, achey, beat-up, and if I feel like I'm overdoing it to the point where an extra 10 miles that week will be counderproductive, then I'll definitely scale back. But with the right nutrition, recovery, and a dash of some divine help, I think I can pull it off successfully. Only time shall tell... Edited by Dream Chaser 2008-10-17 2:42 PM |

Veteran 215 | Subject: RE: Philadelphia Marathon Dream chaser, I am in the same boat as you. I trained for 10 weeks using the FIRST program for a half marathon in Baltimore. And from that date on I had 6 weeks to get prepared for Philly. I did 2 half marathons in October but that was my longest distance. This would be my first marathon. Last weekend I did 16, then planned on 18, 20 and 18 or 20 depending how i was feeling then a week taper. I am struggling with a strained left soleus but made it through the 16 ok. That was my longest run every. I am keeping the mid week runs to one outside tempo and intervals/hill workout on the treadmill. I am sort of prone to injury so I hope this will work for me. I did well with the FIRST half program but it was much longer for a full so I will have to try that another time but I am sort of basing my training off of that. Keep me posted on your progress. I am sooooo nervous about this because i like to be properly trained. I just started running and tris this spring and have always followed a training program. I had some friends doing the race and they sort of talked me into it but now I am sooo worried. I am considering galloway-ing it if worse comes to worse I only have until October 31 to drop to the half but i really don't want to do that. lesley |

Subject: RE: Philadelphia Marathon Hi lesleyann. Yeah, if this were a half marathon I'd be ready to go today ...but it's not. It's a marathon. And as we all know, even though a marathon is twice the distance it's a lot more than twice as tough. And the key to marathon success are succesful Long Runs during training. My right knee was sore from 32 miles last week, so I took yesterday off and swam. This week I am going to aim for 35+ miles with a long run of 16 miles. The bottom-line is I know how far I can push my body and I am going to somewhat gradually and incrementally push it as far and fast as I can for the next four weeks and then taper for one week. After four weeks I will assess how I feel physically and mentally, look at what I was able to accomplish in the five weeks prior, based on mileage and pace, and then make a (hopefully) realistic assessment of what my Marathon Goal Time should be. So come November 16th, 17th I'll know what my Goal Time is and until then I plan to take it one run at a time. Good luck |

Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: Philadelphia Marathon Hi Everyone. I'm coming in from Minnesota on Saturday afternoon to do the half. I'm staying at the Windsor Suites. Can anyone recommend a good dinner place for the night before? Either near the hotel or something I can pick up on my way back from the convention center? Hotel is at 1700 Benjamin Franklin Parkway. I am hoping for something takeout, nothing too greasy or spicy. Fortunately I'm "only" doing the half, so it's not as dire of a decision as it could be Any suggestions are appreciated. |

Subject: RE: Philadelphia Marathon How's everyone's Marathon Training going? I did a 16-miler LR this weekend and it went really well. I've got a sore right knee, but it's getting better and it's not any injury ...just sore I put in back to back 30+ miles for the last two weeks. I have my 20-miler with some MP miles in the middle planned for next Sunday morning, and I hope to hit 40 miles this week. Then I figure with 2 weeks left I'll scale it back down to 30 mi for the week, with a slooow 14-miler, then a taper week with a final LR of 10 miles (3 mile WU and CD with 4 MP mi in the middle). I hope everyone else's training is going well. Anyone heard a weather report yet Edited by Dream Chaser 2008-10-27 12:22 PM |

Master 1741 Boston | Subject: RE: Philadelphia Marathon Training is going good! Doing the half mary, so I did 8.5 miles this Sunday. 9.5 slated for this Sunday. Felt great on the run, except for mega-blister issues. Anyone have any good advice for keeping blisters at bay? They reappear in the same places every run and it sucks. I'm in pain! Any help is appreciated. Do we have a plan to meet the night before for a BT dinner or anything? |

Subject: RE: Philadelphia Marathon I put vaseline or body glide on my toes and any spot on my foot that may rub before any run longer than 6 miles. I've heard a lot of people say they use duct tape! For blister recovery, as odd as this sounds, I've found that rubbing regular jergens skin care lotion onto the blister just makes them disappear. Weirdest thing, but it works wonders for me. |

I did 15 in the pouring rain Saturday. I was supposed to do MP+10 secs (8:10) but I didn't even look at the pacing on my Garmin. I had not been feeling well, had missed a mid-week 10 miler and a couple days of cross training, so I just wanted to finish. I really didn't care about pacing. Guess what it was?
Ok, I'll tell... 8:09. Pretty sweet, huh? |

Expert 1168 Lansdale, PA. | Subject: RE: Philadelphia Marathon I just did the Marine Corps Marathon in Injinji toe socks. (Did IMLP in them too) I LOVE THEM!!!!! They feel a little different between your toes and in the area between the toes and foot but not an issue. Just no blisters!!! Just wish one of the other companies would make something similar in America. If you go to the race expo, check out the "sub4.com" booth. They have tons of Made in USA stuff for runners that is great. I have had their running shorts for 3 years and no signs of wear at all. I bought another at the MCM expo. Now they have two pockets on the butt. great for IPODs or gels. I am not affilliated at all with the company but love the opportunity to buy American at a better price for a better product! Just my 2 cents! Good luck all! |
