Champion 5345 Carlsbad, California | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon WaterDog66 - 2008-12-10 1:09 PM What plan is everyone following? My plan right now is to "Dance with the one who brought me to the party". I will be using the same basic plan I followed to get me to Boston: Pfitz 18/70 (18 Week, 70 Mile Per Week Peak) I have a course mapped out in my area that follows the profile of Boston very closely (Net Downhill first half with a couple of late breaking hills and a downhill finish) I plan on doing most all of my long runs on this course. (I have been doing so since September when I mapped it out) |

Expert 1060 Weymouth, MA | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon Why I get so hyped up? Maybe because some dude is calling me a fake runner and likening running bandit to an elite pro doping and taking credit for a win. I'll be 45 minutes behind you buddy. I won't steal any of your thunder. Actually far, far after that since my "wave" would have started long after your gun sounded. Magically retracted? I posted an apology saying I wouldn't run it bandit since I had no idea this was such a sin to the running community. Nothing magic about admitting you were wrong. I'm going to try like hell to find a corporate bib to buy. I hope you'll be wearing a shirt saying, "Dear Red Sox fans please don't cheer for me you are ruining the sanctity of this sport". Who says I don't take it seriously? I've taken my training very seriously. I just don't take stealing your applause from the non-red sox fans seriously. What if I promise to only accept applause from Red Sox fans? No shite running is about perseverence and accomplishing a goal. Maybe my, your co-workers, and your goals are different. I really don't care about running a 3:15. However, I do think breaking 4 hours and having a good 2009 tri season would be helluva lot of fun and a pretty darn nice accomplishment. I'm not attacking you parnell. I'm questioning your attack on me. So, answer me this: Do you view corporate exemptions and charity runners as fake dopers? Must you qualify in Boston to be a "real runner"? |

Expert 1060 Weymouth, MA | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon WaterDog66 - 2008-12-10 4:09 PM OK, then.... How 'bout them damn Yankees They just signed CC! FWIW, my plan is to be steroid free and then: Run three times per week while following Jorge's 3x per week cycling program. Mondays is a medium distance run 5-10. Wedneday is hill repeats. Saturday is the long run. Long run schedule looks like this: I'll be running a lot of it on the actual course.
If that feels easy I'll graduate to the intermediate schedule that involves 3-4 20+ runs. Good luck everyone. |

My "official" training for IMLP starts Jan 1st with my coach. I am conveniently going to have a long run scheduled for April 20th. |

Beantown | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon Also, there is absolutely no connection between the fans of the Red Sox and the fans that come out to watch a marathon.
No connection? Really!? So I guess my avatar is a big sham. Mr. P has clearly never been a part of this very sacred day here in my hometown. The real statement is "there is no separation". Boston Red Sox fans are FANS OF BOSTON and all things Boston especially the Marathon - we in Red Sox Nation celebrate "sport" of all forms. Hell – why do you think we all take the day off?!?!? It’s the perfect excuse to watch a ball game in the middle of the day and then stroll out of the hallowed grounds of Fenway to watch your friends cross the finish line!! (btw – they even show a snippet on the big screen when the leader crossed the finish line) No connection? HA! We welcome all competitors with open arms! Show us your best and we will return the passion!

I just can't get away from this thread.....I stand corrected REDSOXCHICK......but again, I do think there is a difference between a fan who would come to watch the boston marathon and one who would go to a baseball game...even if it IS the redsox. The redsox fans are not the ones who would be upset if a bandit was running the marathon...of course they aren't going to care. Its the running fans that would. And so by "no connection"....I meant between the redsox fans and the marathon fans...they are a different breed (in general). You of course are a fan of both. I think people can read between the lines instead of taking every word as a literal meaning...I have nothing against redsox fans...haha....i don't even know where that came from. And in response to the other guy....the issue was you and running bandit....not charity and corporate. |

Expert 892 | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon I've got a bit of a scheduling issue that I'm trying to work out. CA 70.3 is April 4th, then Boston 16 day later. At this point I'm thinking CA 70.3 will be done at more of a "training pace" in order to keep the legs semi-fresh for Boston. Like Senor Stocks, I'm there for the "Boston Experience", but I hope to have a respectable showing in front of my sarcastic New England family and friends... they can be brutally tough! If anyone's got bleacher seats in Fenway let me know. I don't think I've seen a game there since Yaz Day back in '83, perhaps? shyte, I'm old... Edited by LJR 2008-12-10 4:33 PM |

Veteran 265 | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon WaterDog66 - 2008-12-10 4:09 PM I would be interested in hearing what sort of training plan everyone will be following for Boston. We will be 18 weeks out very shortly and it's time to start ramping up. Of course, if your doing a 12 week plan, you still have some couch time before it starts getting tough. What plan is everyone following? Wait... when you say ramping up... do you mean I need to increase my long runs? I'll be following the Jessi special, with regular doses of 6+ hour trail runs, then hill work starting in February. It's looking like Boston may actually take a bit of a back seat to a race I'll likely do 4 weeks later. |

Pro 3906 Libertyville, IL | Subject: RE: Boston Marathon http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_4/129.shtml I was leery of a plan with longer distance runs vs most stuff ya read, but am going with the advanced plan as an upgrade from the intermediate plan that got me my BQ. I am hoping for growth as a runner with this one while hopefully bouncing back raring to go for MOO. We shall see how that goes. |

Don't really want to drag it out, but I guess there's a point you're missing here: yes, it is a marathon, but for a lot of folks here it's just as much part of Boston tradition to partake in one way or another as it is an elite sporting event. Yeah, it IS a Boston-thing and you just wouldn't understand. Seriously, it coincides with a Massachusetts-only holiday for a reason. And the folks who camp out in the cold or the rain all day to cheer on runners from start to finish -- they're often not runners or sports fans, but just Massholes celebrating Masshood. It's something to cheer for and aspire to even if you're a non-athlete or non-runner or non-traditional athlete in addition to those who are just non-elite. I've always understood that tradition to have a big place for 'bandits' and one that wouldn't be the same without them. Having a number puts you in a different sub-group, certainly, but all are there to finish, not snub noses. That said, Bandito or Bibbed - as usual, there will be Beer at Boston at mile 20! I'll be handing out cold cups - just look for the BEER NEAR chalk marks 'round Heartbreak Hill Happy training everyone! Edited by running4beer 2008-12-11 11:34 AM |

I will take that comment for what it is worth...coming from someone with the name "running4beer." I got nothin against beer.....but I guess someone with your name needs a little more explanation so I will ablidge.....I was making a distinction between the two seperate groups of fans....I KNOW THAT FANS WHO GO TO THE GAME WILL ALSO BE CHEERING FOR THE RACE. But those are not the fans who would care about bandits. You are obviously the type that doesn't care....but I don't understand why you can't understand that there are "others" outside of your beer club who WOULD care about banditos....I don't think I can be much clearer. But if you want to make another comment and glororize your love of Boston and Beer and make another innacurate comment about how I am a snub-nose who doesn't understand bostonians....go right on ahead. This is turning into a joke....your "pride" of Boston is blinding you from seeing what this was all about in the first place....bandits. I would have made the same argument regardless of what city the marathon takes place in....NY, LONDON, ETC. But I agree with not wanting to drag this on but come on.....I'm really starting to wonder..... |

The purpose of this thread is to discuss the Boston Marathon; not to debate qualifiers vs bandits, Red Sox fans vs marathon fans or whether or not someone is qualified to render an opinion based on their choice of screen name. I know that everyone likes getting in the last word on an argument, but I can assure you that this is the last word on this topic. It's a good story. In his blog there's a link to the Globe article about Gary, the runner who has been doing the New Year's Day course for the past 5 years. Thought you guys might find this amusing and/or inspiring... and perhaps some of you might be ambitious enough to join them next year. Happy running! |

My A race for next year is IMWI, and this will be a long run that falls on April 20th. I am going to enjoy the race like no other. Soak up the experience. Should be a blast. Timebaron and whitem5 took care of my hotel reservations, so I'm really not sure where we are all stayin'. I'm up for a Sunday meetup. You guys decide where and I'll be there...I'm not too familiar with the city, so I'll just GPS where ever we decide. But I'm in, and Talk2MeGoose is in. Plan...hmmm...that's funny. I'm running the Umstead 100 miler 16 days prior. So I guess that's my long training run for the BM. I just won't run AT ALL for the next 15 days after the Umstead so I can recover. Yep. I'm crazy. St. Anthony's tri the weekend after BM. |
