Subject: Swim lessons/instructor

Hi everyone:

I live in Columbus and am a newbie triathlete.  (Running is my #1 passion, and picked up swimming last year as a result of a tibia sfx--absolutely love it).  I have about 3 other friends who compete in triathlons, and this winter, we are looking for some private swim lessons.  We live in the Dublin/Hilliard/Polaris area.  Last winter, we went to Metro V in Dublin, but the instructor has since left, and there were some slight issues with our arrangement.

Does anyone have any good recommendations of an instructor/location.  If I had to classify our skill levels, I would say beginner.  We all have our weaknesses:  I tend to lift my head too much when breathing; one of us doesn't reach long.

Thanks!

Are you a YMCA member? If so send me a PM and I'll give you the name and number of my swim coach.

Sorry, I don't belong to the Y.  There are several in the area.  Is it worth checking out?

Many are in the area. Out of the area you mention there is one in Hillard, one in Powell that would be close to you.

Here is their site. I belong to the YMCA, live in Gahanna. My sister lives in Hillard and used to do swim lessons at the YMCA in Hillard. What specifics are you looking for?

i'm actually looking around as well, i'm going to talk to the people at the rec center where i swim (worthington) and see if i can find some help. i am convinced at least some of my swimming times are due to tech.

I spoke with my swim coach an hour ago. According to him you can buy a program membership (about $30) and then purchase hours of swim instruction at $25 an hour. I'd call the Y and just double check, but this seems entirely reasonable to me.

Again, if you want his name and phone # PM me.

If you -or anyone else- in the Columbus area would like some swim help send me an email - if you can meet me at Columbus Aquatic Center I will help you work on your stroke.  I really am not looking for side work or need money so do worry about it.  I can't commit to alot of time but you can't ask a ton for Free.

I swam comeptitively for 6 years, played water polo at OSU, taught swimming lessons (including adult) for 17 years and have competed in several tri's.   When I was a younger man I could swim a :53 100 yd. free, 5:15 500 yd. free and a 2:10 200yd IM.  Don't know what my current times are but I am sure I can still help.

I'll see if my wife (or someone) can watch the kids so I can get some no kid pool time Saturday the 28th.  I typically go Wed between 1-3 and Sat. between 2-5 but usually with my kids.  We play together then they have snacks and watch me swim laps.

If you decide to do this again please post time & date. I can't make it the 28th due to the Y's swim league 'A' regional meet at our Y that day.

For anyone interested I am going to the pool tomorrow probably twice

FIRST: I plan to go to Columbus Aquatic Center on Hunter (West of High, South of 5th Ave.)  from 1-3.

I am easy to spot with a 2 year old and 4 year old in tow.  I wear long recreational swim trunks and blue googles.  (also see my avatar)

I may have a friend there who can help watch my kids but other wise they will sit in the bleachers and watch for 10-15 minutes at a time.  Of course if 2 people show up for swimming help it is easier.  No payment - that is right FREE lessons - but you may need to babysit for 15 minutes.

It is 50¢ to swim here.  If you don't have a leisure card it is $1 for Columbus Residents. I am not sure how much for non residents.

SECOND:  We plan to go as a family to Worthington community center from 7-9.  My wife needs 20 minutes of that time to run on the treadmill but after that I can swim laps or help anyone interested with there swimming.

It is $8 for a non resident guest to swim here.  I don't know if you need to go in with a member or how much resident charge is.

I am offering at no charge "How to" swimming advice not log term coaching or workouts.

Why free?  I like to swim.  I like to hang out with like minded people.  I like to teach.

I will post here by NOON Friday if my plans change for pool times.

I know Brue. I can vouch for him being a good guy and not a dirt bag, so no one should feel apprehensive about meeting a strange guy they don't know at a pool. He also has two really sweet kids who I've watched while Brue took at dip in Alum Creek before a race there last year. Then he watched my kids while I did the same.

I can't vouch for how good a swim instructor he is...

BTW Brue, I still have your water bottle from that trip to Alum, I need to get that back to you.

Do I need to pay storage?

I know you have a Y membership but if you want to swim in the winter at CAC, let me know.  I definitely want to do more Alum Creek swims in '09.

And I am a very good swim instructor -thank you.Laughing

I will definitely be at CAC  1-3 (barring some unforseen catastrophe).  I am 90% sure about being at Worthington 7-9.

No one else is confirmed to be there so I don't know what will be going on after.  Certainly if anyone wants to grab a coffee or beer afterward in the short north - I am game.

I will continue to post when I will be able to give swim help.  This is not a now or never offer.

-Brue

No catastrophes - but a minor glitch.  I won't be to CAC until 1:15.

If anyone comes I can work with you on anything from feeling at ease in the water, body postion, stroke to alternating breathing, sighting and flip turns.  Also breast stroke, side stroke, Backstroke

 or whatever you need.

I still plan to go to Worthington at 7.

I also will probably go to CAC Saturday (it is open 2-5 - not sure yet when I'll be there)

What's the length on that pool? I'm looking for an olympic size pool. I'm tired of doing long sets in a 25 yarder.

David -both pools are only 25 yards.  The only 50 meter that I know of in Columbus is OSU.  It is like $140 per quarter for a membership.  I think you need to be an alumni or have a sponsor who is a current student/staff.  I don't know what it costs for a day pass.

K -maybe next time.  I plan on going for a theraputic swim and fun in the pool on the 7th (CAC) -I won't swam a workout b/c  I have a race Sunday the 8th.  If anyone wants a hand, let me know.

I took lessons a few years ago from Jeff Sheard from ultrafit-usa (runs Wendy's etc.). Very good coach, lots of experience in multisport. He came to my pool and I met him at his local pool (Hilliard YMCA) for lessons. With some work and his help I knocked 10 minutes off my 1500m times a few years back (from flailing around to actually swimming for me). He should have a link on his website.

Good luck
