I belong to three different 'gyms'.  Fees are:

Natatorium (pool):  $110/year

Fitness center at work:  $7/mo

Neighborhood Gym: $120/mo (family membership for 4 people) so really $30/mo pp

Looks like I pay $46/month in gym fees.

$50/month to belong to the South's largest and best run health club. We have four pools, so no natatorium needed. I think I still remember where they are.

Cost, of course, is going to be relative to where you live. $46 in Alabama is going to be like $200 in NYC.

Scout7 - 2009-01-13 8:26 AM $0

What does that work out to per swim?

Currently, nothing, since my company dropped our gym membership deal and I can't afford the gym without a discount of some kind (it's like $100 a month, though sometimes they run specials for $75 a month). We had the corporate discount ($75) and then my company paid for half of that. The gym had two pools (one lap pool and another outdoor pool for the summertime), which was part of the reason why it was expensive.

My tri club membership is free for the next year, as it was my Christmas present from my parents (which I obviously asked for). We do have to pay a little extra to swim at the pool (b/c it costs so damn much for them to rent it/insurance), and obviously if I want to swim at any time, I have to pay to swim somewhere. Everything else, I can do without a gym, though it'd be nice to have the option to run inside if the weather is bad, or if it's dark and I don't have anyone to run with, for safety reasons.

The advantage of choosing a single sport.

$40/month for the YMCA.  I only use it for the pool since I have a bike trainer and I run outdoors (down to about -10 degrees).  I usually swim 3 to 4 times a week so anywhere between 3.33 and 2.5 a swim workout.

$37/mo to use any of the 6 YMCA's in the Quad Cities. It's nice for swimming, and for the classes they offer (Yoga for stretching), plus they have better treadmills than I have at home (running in place gets old).

$24/month for company subsidized family membership to the Y (to use the pool primarily)

$94/month for a family membership at the brand new really nice gym right across the street from our neighborhood. Gotta pay for the convenience...

Oof...I pay too much.

$65/month for single membership to Wisconsin Athletic Club...they have 6 different gyms and I can go to any. If I wanted to limit myself to one of the facilities and certain time periods, I could pay less, but I don't really want to do that.  So, I budget it in.

$62/month for family membership at the Y.

We have 7 people in our family but the cost is the same for two parents and any number of kids. I've been going to the Y 2-3 times a day lately taking classes, swimming a lot, and running on the treadmill.

My husband's company charges everyone for their gym they have in WI and then rebates it back to us towards our Y membership I think $250/year.

I've heard health clubs/gyms are really suffering with the down turn in the economy.

I work on a military base in Atlanta...

Several gyms on base, one which has a 50m saltwater pool, and the fees are $0.

I just have to sign in...

And the gyms are across the street from the building I work in...

Home gym is free, too

I'm part of the Columbia Association which has multiple gyms, pools, golf courses, tennis courts, etc.  For just me I pay $51 a month (3 year contract).  If I were to change to a family plan it would be a bit over double that.

But the only thing I use it for is the pool facilities.

$19.75/moz. No fee ever to join.

It's pretty inexpensive for a family of four. It's like only a little more than twice what I pay as an individual. Nice facility too.

There's a new gym opening up in town, lifetime fitness and they want almost $200/mo for a family membership!

I  paid $349 for a year for a gym with a pool that has lap lanes available all the time (at the Y they were only available at certain times of the day and only for 1 hour at a time),so that is $29/month.

We pay $20/month at Goodlife that is open 24 hours/day during the week and I can use any goodlife gym (not that I ever go there).

So I pay way too much for gyms that I use only one or two days/week.

$79/month for a family membership at the local YMCA.  My company reimburses 50% per month based on attendance (minimum of 21 times per quarter--pretty easy especially while training) and then another 25% per month at the end of the year if certain goals are achieved relative to Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, BMI, Body Fat %, etc.  There are additional fees for things like lessons and classes ($8 per 8 week session) but overall a pretty good deal.
