I got a used fluid trainer last night, my first. Its a cycleops, but I dont think its the current "2" model. Must be an older one. Oh well for $50 I think its still a bargain. How do I clamp my tire in this? I have a Cannondale R700 road bike.

Loosen the nob all the way to allow the roller to fall back making room for your tire. Clamp you bike in and and crank to secure. Tighten the nob until wheel touches tire.

So I clamp it right at the stock skewer? I'll have to look online and see some pics. It would be metal to metal it looks like. Lemme go try it and take a pic. This cant be right. I could tighten it more but its tearing up the plastic of the skewer on the derailleur side, and its barely holding up the other side.

It didn't come with a skewer?  Well maybe not because it was used, but usually (I think, at least mine did) they come with a skewer that works with the trainer.  You might want to check online a little more to see if that one did, maybe you can order a replacement skewer.

didnt come with anything but the trainer. the skewer is something i have to add to the bike, or can it be easily changed to other bikes?

also, am I supposed to be able to hear the fluid sloshing around, or do I need to refill it?

Just take the skewer off of the rear wheel on the bike you're using on the trainer, and put the trainer skewer in and tighten it down. Then you're ready to put the bike in the trainer. After you're done on the trainer, replace the trainer skewer with your regular skewer . . . and be sure to put the trainer skewer somewhere you'll remember for next time. I lost mine about a year ago and had to get a new one.

Im not one to be swapping the skewer all the time. Think Ill just order a couple of those trainer skewers and leave them on mine and wifes bike full time.

Yes, that looks like it will work...The one in the link you posted has a bit of a "nob" on the quick release side where it will fit into the cups on the trainer unlike the one on your bike where the qr side is just flat.  No need to change it out when you ride outside, either one will work.

you were having trouble with your stock skewer? or with the trainer? will this skewer work? I dont even know how to change it! but I am mechanically inclined...still takes me about 30+ minutes to change a back tire though.

ok I went out and put it on in about 2 mins. thank goodness for being mechanically inclined. ha. I realized that all i had to do was slide the old one out and put the new one in.

a couple new questions

how tight do I need to clamp the skewer in the trainer? "just enough so it doesnt wobble?

how much pressure does the drum have to put on the tire? or does it even matter if its not slipping?

do I need to put a phone book under the front tire?
