I was told just to throw the hand out there. Good advice.

If you throw your arms too far over your head on entry, it makes you wiggle back and forth instead of going straight ahead. My coach told me to enter thumb first and this for some reason helped me keep my arms from crossing over my head. Entering thumb first, (not flat hand) puts your hand in the correct position to do the bent-arm "keyhole" pull, with palms facing out. I can't really imagine entering pinky-first. That seems counter-intuitive. You would have to flip your wrist around during the pull. Of course, if you're pulling in some other way, it might work.

Maybe pinky first is the new "Chuck Norris Chop" swim-style?

Chuck Norris doesn't swim, the water gets out of his way.

Pinky first on backstroke maybe?  I couldn't imagine entering pinky first for freestyle.

tjfry - 2009-03-01 10:31 PM If someone is telling you to enter with your pinky first and they are not referring to backstroke, then you need to run!! They are making it up as they go...

It was actually in the book "Going Long" by Joe Friel.  I'll look up the exact page when I get home.  In the book it says, regarding hand entry, the pinky and ring finger should enter the water first.

Look forward to hearing more (wonder if the book has a pic). I just seems hard to believe. That would look awkward to me but you learn something new everyday

Okay, here it is.  The guy that wrote the Bible says pinky and ring finger first.  I knew I'd just read it and was implementing it into my swim; and I was not crazy about it.

Tonight I tried more toward the thumb first, and it did allow me to keepa higher elbow; whereas, pinky ring finger first made me want to drop my elbow, and made for a less powerful catch.

Bt'ers = 1   Friel = 0 ??

Here's the page.  And YES, he is clearly talking about the triathlon crawl stroke.

What??? Friel is wrong about swimming technique?

What else is in his book could be incorrect?

Does he also recommend sneaking in an extra breath and taking liquid oxygen?

vrljc - 2009-03-01 7:54 PM vortmax - 2009-03-01 7:41 PM I have also been told that your hand should enter the water like your are putting mail through a mail slot, or if not, at least thumb side first.

Well I had a pool workout this morning and decided to give the pinky/index entry a try. I actually think it's not half bad, I am trying to decide which is better thumb/index or pinky/ring. I found that when I did pinky/ring just like the post I am quoted said (putting mail through a slot) it felt smoother since I didn't have to rotate my forearm (as I would if going thumb/index). I don't know what to think at this point. Give it a try though...worth some experimentation.
