Subject: RE: Do you pee in the pool? ChuckyFinster - 2005-03-24 3:54 PM What you guys don't pee in the pool? I thought everyone did... A couple weeks ago my Coach was surprised when I got out of the pool to take a leak. I think the expectation at that pool is to just let loose. He probably thought I was loafing. Oh well... Just think of all the nasties in the water. In summary: 1. Pee 2. Snot 3. Sweat 4. Spit 5. Did someone wipe well? 6. Ear wax 7. Band Aides w/ blood 8. Blood w/o Band Aides 9. Love juice 10. When was the last time that guy showered? 11. Hair and Skin 12. Barf Pour me a tall glass of pool water! Damn, just as I was thinking that the thread could not get more gross..... Incidentally, it's more common in diving but there is a physiological reaction called immersion dieresis, in which whatever bodily function that tells you your bladder is empty is shut down, making you have to pee (that was a totally non medical description and subject to gussying up by an MD type). So, those of you that do can maybe claim you can't help it? Or maybe get an ADA exemption? Chris |

Veteran 137 Littleton, NH | Subject: RE: Do you pee in the pool? The new swimmer diapers don't hold any liquid in them, so if a baby pees in the pool, it goes right through the diaper. Don't know if any of you swim where there are parent - infant classes, but FYI. ETA - if pee really disolves in chlorinated water, does there have to be a certain amount of chlorine? I only ask because when I was 5 I got impatego from swimming in a girls pool and her whole family just peed in it all the time. Edited by NomadicDawn 2005-03-24 8:49 PM |

I hope you never swim in the open water...river, lake, ocean...you have no idea! troydorsey835 - 2005-03-24 2:20 PM I think the fact that this is even up for debate says a lot about what's wrong with SOME people in society today. If you, as an ADULT, are so selfish, inconsiderate and lazy that you would rather purposely piss in water that other people take into their mouths and ears, then you've got bigger problems than an overactive bladder and have no business of having the privelage of sharing the pool with others. ... stepping down from soapbox |

Subject: RE: Do you pee in the pool? TH3_FRB - 2005-03-24 10:42 PM I guess you feel strongly about not peeing in the pool. I hope you never swim in the open water...river, lake, ocean...you have no idea! Yes, I fully realize that open water is subject to rainwater runoff, sewage dumps, animal waste, farm runoff, people discharge, toxins galore, etc., but these are the chances you take swimming in an uncontrolled environment. However, the issue here is whether or not those sharing a public POOL with you have enough class to walk 15 feet to piss into the toilet instead of the pool. This is a courtesy / respect issue, not a biomedical hazard issue. Edited by troydorsey835 2005-03-25 8:20 AM |

Don't know if any of you swim where there are parent - infant classes, but FYI. luckily, the pool i go to has a kiddy pool and a lap pool. i'm sure my 18 month old pees when she's swimming. the lap pool is open for open swims, but its mostly older kids. some of them may pee in the pool. but hopefully not too many ADULTS are peeing in the pool. i think its naive to think there isn't anything nasty in the water, as chunky noted...its just the idea that someone who should know better would still do it. kids are just that, kids. even my oldest knows to get out of the kiddy pool to use the bathroom - and she's not even 4! Funny story from last summer-well, at least a few here will find this amusing, the rest will likely shun me for the rest of my life but I can take it. I friend had a pool party one day and one of my buddies and I got in and started playing a sort of drinking game. We were averaging about one beer every 15min each. Eventually one clever party-goer realized that the two of has had consumed a combined 20+ beers over 3 hours and had never left the water...you do the math |

Veteran 300 Peoria AZ | Subject: RE: Do you pee in the pool? I posted this before in the "why to take showers before entering the pool" post and thought I'd copy and paste it here: First the facts: The amount of water for an Olympic pool can range from 400k-1million gallons of water. (So we will take the avg. and call our hypothetical pool a 700k-gallon pool) The average person pee's about 1.2 cups each time they go. (This is were I can't remember the actual data we gathered so I'll error on the large side) 1000 people pee 1.2 cups of pee in our 700k gallon pool a day. Using some calculators found on the web I was able to calculate that given this scenario you would probably test the water at .0075ppm (parts per MILLION) of pee in the swimming pool. This is good news not only because 1000 people peeing in a pool even in a week is a high estimate but because it would take 133 times more people (or 133,000 people) to pee in the pool before you would even start to notice an increase in the saltiness of the pool water...EWWWWWWW YUCK!!!!!! All things put aside, you know when your swimming your putting every part of every other persons body in your mouth...WOMEN are "open" with bodily fluids always being extracted into the pool...MEN are not to be discounted from that either. Point is, if you are so disgusted with the thought of merely PEE being in the pool your swimming in, then maybe you ought to consider swimming in the shower for practice. This is not a matter of respect or common courtesy. If it was people would be asked to leave when they did it...spend 10 min as a lifeguard or a swim coach watching from above and you can tell who's doing it and how often...I've never heard of any Masters class kicking somebody out for peeing and you know those coach's see it. This doesn't give you an excuse not to relieve yourself before you enter the pool...if you can avoid it, try to. NOBODY should be using the pool as his or her personal bathroom…as if you’re running from the locker room to get into the pool to pee. |
